Finding someone who wants to host the 2024 Summer Olympics is proving quite difficult.
Rome became the latest city to express resistance to hosting that year’s games when its mayor, Virginia Raggi, said she would reject the city’s bid to host those Olympics.
Several cities — including Boston, Toronto and Hamburg — previously dropped out of the running, leaving many people to wonder: Does anyone actually want these Olympic Games?
The list of headaches associated with hosting the Olympics is quite long. Tons of construction, buildings that aren’t used much after the events and the incredible cost (often over budget) typically are the main concerns. The IOC and other private interests usually profit, while the host city and its taxpayers are stuck with cost overruns and other problems.
So which cities are most likely to host the 2024 Summer Games? There are just three realistic options.
Budapest seems like a long shot, and Paris recently hosted soccer’s European Championship over the summer. Los Angeles has the infrastructure and the Olympic experience — it hosted the 1984 Summer Games — to pull it off, so it’s probably the best bet at this juncture, although nothing is official yet.
The United States hasn’t hosted the Summer Olympics since 1996 in Atlanta.
