Watch Vince Wilfork Hit Jacoby Brissett, Reportedly Cause QB’s Thumb Injury

Vince Wilfork is not a guy you want to have land on you. Jacoby Brissett found that out the hard way Thursday night.

During the third quarter of the New England Patriots’ 27-0 win over the Houston Texans, 325-pound Wilfolk flopped down directly on top of Brissett after the Patriots rookie quarterback had left the pocket and scrambled downfield.

Brissett picked up 4 yards on the play, but his run could end up proving more costly than beneficial.

Wilfork’s tackle left Brissett with a sprained ligament in his right thumb, a source close to the quarterback told The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin on Friday.

WEEI.com’s Mike Petraglia was the first to report news of Brissett’s injury, the severity of which varies, depending on the report. While Petraglia initially reported Brissett likely will need surgery, sources later told NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Dianna Russini the injury was not believed to be serious.

Despite reportedly injuring his throwing hand, Brissett remained in the game and appeared no worse for wear, attempting 10 more passes and completing five of them. Those passes had a considerable amount of zip behind them, too, especially one that bounced of wide receiver Julian Edelman’s hands in the end zone.

With Brissett and Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) both banged up, and one week still remaining in Tom Brady’s Deflategate suspension, it remains to be seen who will start under center for the Patriots when they host the Buffalo Bills next Sunday.
