Colin Kaepernick once again is a starting quarterback in the NFL.
San Francisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly announced Tuesday that Kaepernick will be under center Sunday when the Niners travel to New York for a matchup with the Buffalo Bills.
Kaepernick takes over for Blaine Gabbert, who struggled in the first five games of the season, completing just 58 percent of his passes and throwing six interceptions as San Francisco stumbled to a 1-4 record.
Gabbert had one of the best games of his career in San Francisco’s 28-0 Week 1 win over the Los Angeles Rams, but it’s been all downhill since, as he’s posted a 65.1 passer rating.
Despite riding the bench to start the season, Kaepernick has been at the center of one of the NFL’s biggest storylines: his ongoing protest during the national anthem in an attempt to speak out against a “country that oppresses black people and people of color.”
On the field, Kaepernick has much to prove. Injuries and poor play limited him to nine appearances last season (eight starts) in which he completed just 59 percent of his passes with six touchdown tosses to five interceptions. His 78.5 passer rating was 10 points below his career mark.
