Game 2 of the National League Division Series between the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants was the polar opposite of Game 1.
After both starting pitchers threw absolute gems in the Cubs’ 1-0 win Friday, neither starter made it through the fourth inning Saturday in Chicago’s 5-2 win at Wrigley Field.
Jeff Samardzija put the Giants in an early hole, as he allowed four earned runs on six hits and one walk in just two innings. Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks was pulled after 3 2/3 innings after he was struck in the arm by a line drive. He was charged with two earned runs on four hits.
Ben Zobrist got things started for Chicago with an RBI single in the first. Hendricks then helped out his own cause when he drove in two more runs on a single in the second, and Kris Bryant made it 4-0 with a single later in the inning.
Gregor Blanco and Brandon Belt did their best to get San Francisco back in the game in the third, but Travis Wood struck in the fourth with a solo home run.
Wood also was the winning pitcher, as the Cubs’ bullpen allowed just two hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Chicago now has a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five game series, which shifts to San Francisco on Monday.
