BOSTON — The Toronto Blue Jays tallied six hits before the Red Sox recorded their first Sunday. Unfortunately for Toronto, Boston made that one hit count.
Blue Jays pitcher Aaron Sanchez took a no-hitter into the seventh inning at Fenway Park in the teams’ regular-season finale. But with one out in the frame, Hanley Ramirez put an end to that bid with one swing of the bat.
The Red Sox first baseman’s solo home run, his 30th of the season and Boston’s first hit of the game, deadlocked the score at 1. But it wasn’t without controversy, as Ramirez’s blast actually sailed over the left field foul pole atop the Green Monster, making it almost impossible to tell whether or not it had stayed fair.
The Blue Jays challenged the home run ruling on the field, but the umpires upheld their initial call.
Ramirez’s homer also helped the Red Sox achieve a pretty significant historical milestone.
