Everyone seems to have an opinion on the trend of professional athletes protesting during national anthems at sporting events.
We’re guessing Jim Nantz didn’t want to make his view this public, though.
A video surfaced recently of a moment before the Miami Dolphins’ Sept. 29 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, in which the CBS play-by-play announcer apparently doesn’t know his mic is on. Here’s what the mic caught:
“They’re going to keep kneeling as long as we put cameras right in their face,” Nantz says, referring to a handful of Dolphins players who knelt during the anthem to protest the unjust treatment of minorities in the United States.
When Colin Kaepernick started this movement during the preseason, many accused the San Francisco 49ers quarterback of just trying to bring attention to himself. That appears to be Nantz’s stance here.
It’s a cynical viewpoint, but hardly one that would deter NFL players from continuing their protests, as the whole point in putting the spotlight on themselves is in hopes of continuing the discussion about America’s mistreatment of minorities.
Either way, there’s a good chance Nantz double-checks his mic before making comments in the booth from here on out.
