Julian Edelman Wouldn’t Be Shocked If Tom Brady Played Until He’s 100

Tom Brady might never retire.

Brady still is playing at a high level at age 39, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise to New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman, who has seen firsthand how hard the quarterback works before, during and after games.

“He lives, breathes and eats football, so if he’s not in the film room, he’s getting his body worked on. And if he’s not getting his body worked on, he’s eating avocado ice cream and staying away from strawberries,” Edelman said Monday on WEEI’s “Ordway, Merloni and Fauria.” “When you have that crucial trifecta going, you can play until you’re like 100, I think.”

OK, so maybe Brady won’t be slinging touchdowns when he reaches the century mark, but he certainly has shown no signs of slowing down. Brady threw for 406 yards and three touchdowns Sunday against the Cleveland Browns in his return from his four-game Deflategate suspension, and the performance might simply be the beginning of bigger and better things this season, especially if the veteran signal-caller really was shaking off some rust, as he suggested following the Patriots’ 33-13 win.

“I mean, players are players. Coaches are coaches. Of course you’re going to get fired up,” Edelman said Monday of Brady’s epic return to the gridiron in Week 5. “You’re going to take the week of preparation, you have a little bit more fun, that’s for sure. There’s more fun going on because you’re excited to see your leader out there. Kind of like one of those things where you have to go and put the hard hat on, bring the lunch pail to work and this time you had a little more pep in your step.”

Brady has said before he’s not ready to consider retirement because he still loves playing football. Hey, what’s another 61 years?
