Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis still wants to move his team to Las Vegas, but he doesn’t want to do it right away.
Davis told ESPN.com on Saturday that even if the stadium plan in Sin City is approved, he plans to keep the Raiders in Oakland for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. The Raiders have contract options for the O.co Coliseum for both of those years.
“We want to bring a Super Bowl championship back to the Bay Area,” Davis told ESPN.com.
Davis and the Raiders cleared their first hurdle Friday when the Nevada state legislature approved a tax plan to raise $750 million toward the Las Vegas stadium’s $1.9 billion budget. Nevada governor Brian Sandoval is expected to sign the bill Monday.
The Raiders’ work isn’t done yet, though, as they’re still missing official permission from the NFL. Davis will make that request at the league meetings in January, and the Raiders will need 24 of the 32 NFL owners to approve the move to Las Vegas.
