Postseason baseball in our nation’s capital usually creates a conundrum for baseball fans at Nationals Park. Not Thursday night, though.
The Washington Nationals squared off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in a winner-take-all Game 5 of the National League Division Series. The contest didn’t disappoint, lasting deep into the night as both teams emptied their bullpens.
There was one problem, though: Many fans in the area take the Metro to get to Nationals Park, since there’s a stop at the nearby Navy Yard. But the last train from the Navy Yard was scheduled to depart at 11:40 p.m. ET on Thursday, at which point the game still was in the seventh inning.
So, was there a rush to the exit to catch the last train home? Not quite.
We applaud Nationals fans for not bailing on their team, but their story didn’t have a happy ending. The game, a 4-3 Dodgers win that eliminated Washington from contention, ended at 12:30 a.m., well after the Metro had closed for the evening. That meant thousands of already dejected Nationals fans had to find another way home.
On the bright side, they won’t have to worry about this problem until next year.
