Marc Trestman has paid the price for the Baltimore Ravens’ offensive struggles and 3-2 start.
The Ravens fired Trestman as offensive coordinator Monday, ending his tenure with the team after less than two seasons. Quarterbacks coach Marty Mornhiweg will take over.
Baltimore announced the decision on Twitter, and head coach John Harbaugh followed up with a statement of his own.
The Ravens currently rank 23rd in points per game and occupy the same position in yards per game among the NFL’s 32 teams. Baltimore’s Trestman-led offense was 25th in points per game last season, his first with the team.
Citing colleague Jason La Canfora, CBS’ Jared Dubin reported on Baltimore’s unease with Trestman.
“… there was mounting frustration in Baltimore about the team abandoning the run, not calling many vertical routes, and super conservative third-down play calling,” Dubin wrote.
The Ravens have 11 games remaining in 2016, so plenty of time exists for them to rediscover their offensive groove.
We’ll know better Sunday whether that sound you hear is quarterback Joe Flacco breathing a sigh of relief or if Baltimore’s offensive problems extend further and higher than Trestman.
