The Boston Red Sox made their decision on a general manager, and their decision is to go without a GM.

The Red Sox announced Tuesday they will, for now, leave the position vacant after Mike Hazen left to join the Arizona Diamondbacks. Boston on Tuesday also announced the promotion of Eddie Romero to senior vice president/assistant general manager.

“(Romero) is a very talented individual who we think can make a real impact for us with his background in player evaluation and his knowledge of our minor league system,” Dombrowski said in a statement released by the team. “A native Spanish speaker, his ability to communicate with both players and staff is significant, especially in today’s game. We look forward to having Eddie on board to assist our efforts to improve our ball club.”

Romero currently is in his 11th year with the organization, previously serving as vice president, international scouting, a role the Red Sox promoted him to prior to the 2016 season.

The announcement comes shortly after multiple reports indicated the Diamondbacks also were set to hire now former Red Sox assistant GM Amiel Sawdaye, who reportedly will join Arizona as a senior VP and assistant general manager.
