Marcus Cannon was set to hit unrestricted free agency at the end of this season. Now, he’s looking at another half-decade as a New England Patriot.
The Patriots and Cannon on Tuesday agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension, according to reports from ESPN’s Mike Reiss and Field Yates. The terms of the extension have yet to be reported.
Cannon has been the Patriots’ most improved player this season, replacing the injured Sebastian Vollmer as New England’s starting right tackle and playing the best football of his six-year career. The 28-year-old has played in 10 of the team’s 11 games (starting all 10) and ranks third among Patriots offensive players in snaps played behind only left guard Joe Thuney and center David Andrews.
Pro Football Focus has Cannon graded as a 83.3 this season, the highest grade of his career and nearly double his 2015 mark.
Other impending Patriots free agents include linebacker Dont’a Hightower, cornerbacks Malcolm Butler (restricted) and Logan Ryan, defensive ends Jabaal Sheard and Chris Long, tight end Martellus Bennett, defensive tackle Alan Branch, running back LeGarrette Blount and safety Duron Harmon.
UPDATE (3:47 p.m. ET): NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport has details on Cannon’s contract extension, which reportedly includes $14.5 million in guaranteed money.
