Patriots Practice Report: Tom Brady, Julian Edelman Absent; Jacoby Brisett Returns

FOXBORO, Mass. — No offense to Jacoby Brissett, but the New England Patriots were missing some offensive firepower at practice Wednesday.

On the same day Brissett, the Patriots’ rookie quarterback, returned to practice, New England was missing quarterback Tom Brady, wide receiver Julian Edelman, tight end Rob Gronkowski and safety Jordan Richards. Brady was absent for two practices last week with a knee injury but participated Friday and played Sunday in the Patriots’ 22-17 win over the New York Jets.

Gronkowski injured his back against the Jets and also is dealing with a chest injury. Edelman has been limited for weeks with a foot injury, though it’s unclear why he was absent Wednesday. Richards injured his knee Sunday.

Special teams captain Matthew Slater returned to practice after missing three sessions last week with a foot injury. It appears rookie fullback Glenn Gronkowski was released from the Patriots’ practice squad to make room for running back D.J. Foster.

Brissett is on injured reserve and appears to be the player designated to return from the list. The Patriots have 21 days to activate him to the 53-man roster, or else his season will be over for good.
