FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots set a new standard for ball security Sunday night.
During the opening drive of the Patriots’ matchup with the Seattle Seahawks at Gillette Stadium, quarterback Tom Brady completed New England’s 252nd consecutive pass without an interception to begin the season, breaking the NFL record set by the 2008 Washington Redskins.
The Patriots are the only NFL team that has yet to throw a pick this season — a feat made even more impressive by the fact they’ve employed three different starting quarterbacks.
Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett both kept the ball out of opponents’ hands during their respective starting stints, and Brady has been downright surgical since returning from his four-game Deflategate suspension in Week 5.
Brady entered Sunday as the NFL leader in completion percentage, passer rating and yards per attempt, and he’d thrown 12 touchdown passes with zero interceptions.
UPDATE (9:55 p.m. ET): The streak did not last much longer. Seahawks cornerback DeShawn Shead picked off an ill-advised Brady pass six minutes into the second quarter, ending New England’s stretch of turnover-free passing at 258 throws.
