The Boston Red Sox officially hired Torey Lovullo’s replacement Friday, appointing Gary DiSarcina as their new bench coach.
DiSarcina, a Billerica, Mass., native, spent the last three seasons as a base coach for the Los Angeles Angles (third in 2014 and 2015, first in 2016). He previously managed the Red Sox’s Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket in 2013 — earning Minor League Manager of the Year honors — and the Sox’s short-season Single-A club in Lowell from 2007 to 2009.
Between those stints, DiSarcina worked in the front offices of both the Red Sox and the Angels. The 48-year-old also played 12 seasons as a second baseman for the Angels, posting a .258/.292/.341 slash line over 1,086 big league games, before finishing his career with the Pawtucket Red Sox in 2002.
DiSarcina replaces Lovullo, who earlier this month became the Arizona Diamondbacks’ latest manager. Lovullo spent the last six seasons on John Farrell’s coaching staffs in Toronto and Boston and briefly served as the Red Sox’s interim manager after Farrell was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2015.
