Rick Porcello had an incredible 2016 season, and he’s getting plenty of recognition for it.
The Boston Red Sox starter won his first Cy Young Award this month, and the right-hander just added another title to his résumé. Major League Baseball announced Tuesday that it named Porcello its American League Comeback Player of the Year.
Porcello is almost a no-brainer for the award, bouncing back after a rough 2015 campaign. The 27-year-old added 13 wins to his record in 2016 to go 22-4, and his 22 wins were the most in MLB and the most for a Red Sox player since Pedro Martinez went 23-4 in 1999. Porcello improved his ERA from 4.92 in 2015 to 3.15 this past season and made a career-high 33 starts.
Porcello also has some pretty impressive streaks going, as he’s the only AL pitcher to start at least 27 games in each of his last eight seasons and has the longest active streak in the AL for starts of at least five innings with 41 straight.
Washington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon received the honor in the National League after adding 15 homers and 60 RBIs to his 2015 stats.
