The Tampa Bay Lightning will be without one of the NHL’s best players for the foreseeable future after center Steven Stamkos was diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his right knee.
The Lightning announced Wednesday that Stamkos is “out indefinitely.”
“Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos suffered a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee during the team’s game against the Detroit Red Wings Tuesday night and will remain out of the lineup indefinitely,” Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said in a statement released on the team’s website.
“We are in the process of evaluating options for repair and rehabilitation and will release more information as it becomes available.”
Stamkos entered Wednesday’s slate of games with the second-most points in the league. He has scored nine goals with 11 assists in 17 games for Tampa Bay.
The Lightning survived without an injured Stamkos for a large portion of last season and most of the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs because of their impressive scoring depth. That should be the case this campaign as well.
