Bobby Valentine wasn’t ready to divulge any new information regarding the rumor that president-elect Donald Trump is considering him for the position of U.S. Ambassador to Japan.

In fact, the former Boston Red Sox manager, who currently is the executive director of athletics at Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Conn., downplayed the report in an interview with CSNNE.com.

“All this talk about Japan is just speculation as far as I’m concerned,” Valentine said, per CSNNE.com, “but it’s an honor to even be in the conversation.

“That being said, I’m extremely happy at Sacred Heart University. It’s growing rapidly and is a very dynamic, exciting place to be.”

Valentine, who spent one season as Boston’s manager in 2012, has ties to Japan, having managed the Chiba Lottes Marines in 1995 and again from 2004 through 2009. We’ll see if Trump really considers him for the important position, though Kevin Youkilis — and maybe some Red Sox fans, too — clearly is hoping the president-elect looks elsewhere.
