David Ortiz Says He’s Definitely Retiring Despite Instagram Joke

Sorry, Boston Red Sox fans, but David Ortiz’s Instagram post about coming back for another season was nothing more than a joke.

In case you missed it, the now-retired designated hitter trolled Red Sox Nation after the team acquired ace pitcher Chris Sale, posting on Instagram that the trade “got (him) thinking.” But in an interview on the red carpet for Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year on Tuesday, Big Papi laughed at the notion he’d unretire in 2017.

Ortiz had one of the best seasons of his career in his final year, batting .315 with a 1.021 OPS, 38 home runs and 127 RBIs, so the idea of him returning for his 41-year-old season isn’t far-fetched. However, Ortiz was in a considerable amount of pain dealing with heel and foot injuries in 2016, so we’re going to have to take him at his word.
