Jets Could Consider Moving Darrelle Revis To Safety For 2017 Season

Darrelle Revis no longer is the best cornerback in the NFL, and he soon might not be a cornerback at all.

The New York Jets went 10-6 in 2015, but they’re floundering at 4-9 this season. Their offense went from mediocre to bad, but their defense, which was one of the best in football last season, took a huge nosedive and now ranks 19th in the league with 355.5 yards allowed per game.

One possible solution to New York’s defensive woes might be to move Revis to free safety, although head coach Todd Bowles said that’s not happening this season.

“No. He’s playing corner,” Bowles said Wednesday, via ESPN. “It’s not a thought process right now. It’s something we might talk about in the offseason. It ain’t gonna happen over the next three games.”

The move would make sense, as starting free safety Marcus Gilchrist is out for the season after tearing his patellar tendon against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Plus, Revis simply isn’t cutting it at cornerback anymore, and his massive contract makes things complicated.

Revis carries a $15.3 million cap hit for 2017, and even cutting him would save New York $7.3 million.
