As far as the NCAA is concerned, Donnel Pumphrey now is the all-time Football Bowl Subdivision leader in career rushing yards. But, through no fault of his own, that record doesn’t come without questions.
The San Diego State running back passed Ron Dayne’s record 6,397 yards during Saturday’s 34-10 Las Vegas Bowl win over Houston, although that’s not the number of yards the former Wisconsin running back finished his career with.
If you count bowl games, Dayne finished with 7,125 yards, but postseason stats prior to 2002 aren’t considered for the NCAA record. And if you account for every single rushing yard, regardless of the game, Tony Dorsett also has more yards than Pumphrey, according to SportsReference.com.
Does your head hurt yet? Yeah, ours too. Dayne apparently was on the lookout for Pumphrey “breaking” his record, and he sent out a congratulatory tweet with a side of shade.
Touché.
