Frozen Fenway 2017 Live: Boston University Downs UMass 5-3 In Hockey East Clash

BU 5, UMass 3: It was too much Terriers in the end, as they scored two goals 48 seconds apart late in the third period to ice the first of two Frozen Fenway Hockey East games.

Boston Bruins prospects — Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson (two), Charlie McAvoy (one) — accounted for three of BU’s goals, while Gabriel Chabot and Chad Krys scored the other two.

Steven Iacobellis scored with 52 seconds remaining, but it was too little too late for UMass. Griff Jeszka and Ray Pigozzi were the UMass goal scorers.

With the win, BU improves to 12-5-2 overall and 5-2-2 in Hockey East, while UMass drops to 5-15-2 overall and 2-8-1 in Hockey East.

Third period, 4:21, BU 5-2: The rout is on. A juicy rebound went right to Gabriel Chabot, who scored on a one-timer from the left circle. The two goals were 48 seconds apart.

Third period, 5:09, BU 4-2: The Minutemen’s comeback attempt got a whole lot harder when Chad Krys gave the Terriers back a two-goal advantage. Jordan Greenway and Bobo Carpenter were credited with the assists.

Third period, 6:21, BU 3-2: UMass killed a power play, and they have just over six minutes left to tie things up.

Third period, 11:39, BU 3-2: And we have ourselves a game. Steven Iacobellis brought the puck into the offensive zone and found Ray Pigozzi, who finished from the slot to shorten BU’s advantage to a single goal. It was a short-handed goal. Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson also was penalized for slashing, giving UMass a power play after a short 4-on-4 period.

Third period, 12:02, BU 3-1: The Terriers received another power-play opportunity after UMass’ Austin Plevy was sent to the box for roughing.

End second period: Well, that was a fun period. Bruins prospects Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson and Charlie McAvoy both scored in the second frame, but UMass finally got on the board with 3:02 remaining on a Griff Jeszka goal.

Second period, 11:28, BU 1-0: Will the fifth time be the charm? UMass had a man-advantage again after a Charlie McAvoy holding penalty.

Second period, 13:13, BU 1-0: Make that 0-for-4 on the power play for UMass, as BU killed both penalties.

Second period, 15:13, BU 1-0: And UMass had a short 5-on-3 after Clayton Keller was sent to the box.

Second period, 16:20, BU 1-0: UMass went back on the power play after Dante Fabbro was sent to the box for interference.

End first period, BU 1-0: It was a pretty good first period for the Minutemen until the clocked ticked under 30 seconds remaining in the frame.

Boston Bruins prospect Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson gave BU a 1-0 lead with just 28 seconds remaining in the first thanks to an impressive individual effort from close range. The Terriers held a slim 9-8 advantage in shots on goal, and UMass went 0-for-2 on the power play, while BU struck out on its only man-advantage.

First period, :28, BU 1-0: The Terriers struck first thanks to a pretty individual effort from Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson. It was his seventh goal of the season.

First period, 5:47, BU 0, UMass 0: UMass successfully killed the power play, and the Minutemen went on the man-advantage after BU’s Nick Roberto was sent to the box for interference at 5:47.

First period, 8:10, BU 0, UMass 0: The Terriers had the first power play at the 8:10 mark after a Niko Hildenbrand trip.

First period, 9:22, BU 0, UMass 0: And the World Junior Championship tributes continued at the next stoppage with 9:22 left in the first. Boston Bruins prospect and BU defenseman Charlie McAvoy got a nice pop when his name was announced.

First period, 13:29, BU 0, UMass 0: We have no score with 13:29 remaining in the first period. They did a little tribute to some of the Hockey East World Junior Championship participants during the latest stoppage.

1:38 p.m.: And now we have another stop. It appeared they were having some issues with the ice, as the refs worked on an area near the penalty box.

1:36 p.m.: The puck has dropped after a little bit of an unexpected delay. It’s time for Frozen Fenway.

The opening Frozen Fenway Hockey East doubleheader was postponed until Sunday due to the huge snowstorm that passed through the area Saturday. But Sunday has turned into a beautiful winter day for some outdoor hockey.

The No. 5 Boston University Terriers and UMass Minutemen will get things started at Fenway Park at 1:30 p.m.
