Mario Mandzukic’s goal is the difference in scoreline in this contest. Roma enjoyed a better start, but Juventus struck first when it profited off a defensive lapse.

Roma has to improve its shooting accuracy. Had any of its three shots hit the target, the first-half might have unfolded differently.

Expect to see many substitutions in the second half, as the managers give players another run-out without the pressure that comes from competitive games.

40th minute, 1-0 Juventus: The referee cautions Diego Perotti for diving. The Roma forward went down under Mehdi Benatia’s challenge inside Juventus’ penalty area.

The Croatian outpaced Federico Fazio onto Alex Sandro’s through pass, dribbled around Allison and shot successfully into the empty goal.

Roma pays the price for failing to turn its early advantage into a goal. Mandzukic lost his marker easily and possesses more than enough poise to punish opponents from that angle.

25th minute, 0-0: Miralem Pjanic misses narrowly wide with an outside-of-the-foot shot from 20 yards out.

23rd minute, 0-0: Juan Cuadrado finds Mario Mandzukic with a powerful and accurate cross to the far post, but the Juventus striker can’t redirect it on target.

Eighth minute, 0-0: Edin Dzeko volleys Gregoire Defrel’s cross wide of Juventus’ goal from agonizingly close range. He should have scored.

Seventh minute, 0-0: Paulo Dybala shrugs off Radja Nainggolan and shoots from 25 yards out, but his left-footed effort rolls straight to Alisson’s waiting arms.

Kickoff: Juventus vs. Roma is underway at Gillette Stadium.

Pregame: The teams are finished warming up, and the starters are ready to take the field.

The starting lineups aren’t the strongest but they include enough of the teams’ likely starters in Week 1 of Serie A’s season to make this a compelling encounter.

We’re particularly excited to see how Juventus’ Daniel Rugani and Mehdi Benatia pair at the heart of the defense. They’ll be required to shoulder an increased workload this season, following Leonardo Bonucci’s departure to AC Milan.
