Amid speculation that they might trade up to draft a quarterback this year, the New England Patriots took a close look at a much less heralded QB prospect.
The Patriots on Wednesday put Florida International product Alex McGough through a private workout in Miami, a source told Eric Edholm of Pro Football Weekly.
Who is Alex McGough? He was a four-year starter at FIU who completed 65.4 percent of his passes as a senior in 2017. His 48 career touchdown passes (17 in 2017) are the most in program history.
Listed at 6-foot-3, 218 pounds, McGough was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine and does not even have a draft profile on NFL.com. He threw last week at FIU’s pro day, having fully recovered from a broken collarbone suffered in the Panthers’ bowl game.
Though he’s unlikely to hear his name called until late in the 2018 NFL Draft, if he’s selected at all, McGough reportedly has met with or worked out for close to a dozen NFL teams, including the Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants, Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills.
With reigning NFL MVP Tom Brady set to turn 41 in August, the Patriots likely will draft a quarterback this year to groom as his potential successor. After trading wide receiver Brandin Cooks to the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday, New England now owns two picks in the first round, four in the first two rounds and eight overall.
