FOXBORO, Mass. — Bill Belichick was unusually forthcoming Wednesday in his first news conference of training camp.

Not only did Belichick confirm Tom Brady will remain the New England Patriots’ starting quarterback after returning from a four-game suspension, he also committed to third-year pro Jimmy Garoppolo as the team’s Week 1 starting signal caller.

“We had finally some definition with Tom’s situation, so our priority now then is to get Jimmy ready for the start of the season, for the Arizona (Cardinals) game,” Belichick said Wednesday at Gillette Stadium. “So, that will be a comprehensive process. Tom will return as the starting quarterback when he comes back. But in the meantime, we’re going to prioritize the first part of our schedule. And that will be in getting Jimmy ready to go.”

The Patriots also have rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett on their 90-man roster. Some wondered if the Patriots had lost confidence in Garoppolo when they spent a third-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft on Brissett.
