While the entire sports world is still processing the tragic passing of Jose Fernandez, a small bag washed ashore in Miami on Monday, offering a chilling reminder of what’s still so difficult to believe.

A Miami beachgoer discovered a bag containing four baseballs autographed by the deceased Miami Marlins pitcher, as well as Fernandez’s checkbook, according to WSVN-TV.

The bag, found about a mile from the site of the boating accident that claimed the lives of Fernandez and his two friends, appeared to belong to Fernandez or his friends, according to Ocean Rescue Division chief Vincent Canosa.

Miami city officials still are investigating what led to the fatal accident early Sunday morning, while the Marlins — after canceling Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves — returned to the field Monday night against the New York Mets.
