The Bruins’ fourth line has been called many things. The players are probably OK with them all, as long as you can call them “winners.”

You can on Tuesday night after a gritty, gutsy performance pushed the B’s to a 3-0 series lead over the New York Rangers. After the dramatic, come-from-behind victory, NESN’s Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley were rinkside at Madison Square Garden to break down the action.

The Bruins’ fourth line has no shortage of fans around the Boston area, thanks to the unit’s energetic play that seems to come through just when the B’s need it the most. That line could also be a difference-maker during the team’s Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Rangers.

According to NESN’s Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley, the Boston forwards could end up playing a key role in this series because the Rangers just don’t have the depth up front to match up with the B’s. On defense, however, the two tell a different tale.

Most great goals are triggered by equally great, but often overlooked defensive plays.

That was certainly the case Thursday night, when a textbook poke check by Zdeno Chara near the Bruins’ blue line in overtime led directly to Brad Marchand‘s game-winning goal. Marchand beating Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist five-hole will be what shows up in the highlight package, but his goal never happens without Chara’s heads-up play in his own zone.

The Boston Bruins’ Game 7 overtime win in the NHL Eastern Conference Quarterfinal over the Toronto Maple Leafs was a heart-stopper. TD Garden shook with excitement when Patrice Bergeron netted the game-winner to cap off an amazing come-from-behind win for the B’s.

NESN play-by-play man Jack Edwards and color analyst Andy Brickley felt that excitement in the broadcast booth and Edwards made a pretty epic call of the final goal.

With 11 minutes remaining in the third period Monday night, the Bruins were staring at a three-goal deficit and seemed destined for the golf course. What transpired after that point will be etched in Boston sports lore forever.

Nathan Horton cut the Maple Leafs’ lead to 4-2 with a goal 9:18 into the third, but Toronto still held a comfortable cushion with just three minutes to play. Claude Julien then called Tuukka Rask to the bench, and the Bruins proceeded to score twice in under a minute with the extra attacker, tying the game and setting up Patrice Bergeron‘s game-winner in overtime.

Even though the Bruins aren’t headed into the playoffs with the No. 2 seed, the fact of the matter is that they are in. The B’s match up in the first round against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and they still have a shot to make a deep run in the playoffs.

For the first time since 2007, there will be playoff hockey at the Nassau Coliseum this spring.

After finishing dead last in the Atlantic Division last year, the Islanders clinched a playoff spot last week and currently have a hold on the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference with two games to play. The Isles are young and talented up front — John Tavares ranks third in the NHL with 27 goals — and surprisingly sturdy in net, with veteran Evgeni Nabokov boasting modest stats but winning a conference-best 23 games.

Let’s just hope they leave those hideous black sweaters on the shelf come playoff time.

When the lockout concluded, John Tortorella‘s New York Rangers certainly didn’t expect to be fighting for their playoff lives in the final week of the regular season. The Rangers were picked by many as a favorite to reach the Stanley Cup Final out of the Eastern Conference, but Tortorella’s club has not been able to meet those lofty expectations.

But with 52 points, the Blueshirts would be in the playoffs if the season ended today, and NESN’s Andy Brickley thinks they could pose a serious threat to the Bruins in the first round if they secure the No. 7 seed. 

One of the three matchups between the two squads required overtime and another ended in a shootout, and New York still boasts one of the league’s top goaltenders in Henrik Lundqvist. Last year’s Vezina Trophy winner ranks fifth in the NHL in save percentage (.926) and sixth in goals against average (2.08), and Bruins fans know very well how a top-notch goaltender can change a team’s fortunes in the postseason.

There weren’t many positives to take away from the Bruins’ loss to the Flyers on Tuesday, so Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley didn’t try to find any. With a 5-2 loss firmly etched into the scorebook, the two broadcasters took a somber look back at what went wrong for the Bruins in Philadelphia, starting with some key turnovers the B’s committed in their own zone.

“It’s not a laughing matter when you talk about turnovers in a hockey game and you’re on the team that’s turning the puck over,” Brick explained. “It always ends up in the back of your net, and that was the essence of the loss [Tuesday] against the Flyers.”

The Bruins fed off of the emotion of the crowd on Saturday at TD Garden, even throughout their emotional loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Bruins prevailed on the stat sheet, but that didn’t translate to a win. The B’s outshot the Penguins 40-24, but struggled on the penalty kill, showing a glaring weakness heading into the postseason. With four losses in the last four games, the Bruins’ fate remains to be seen.

The Bruins got ahead early on Saturday afternoon, but couldn’t hold the lead against the mighty Penguins.

Brad Marchand got the Bruins off to a 1-0 lead off an assist from Zdeno Chara. Tuukka Rask also got credited with an assist on the goal.

Jaromir Jagr deserves credit as well, as he took the Penguin defenders’ attention off Marchand and opened up lane for the Boston left wing.

The Bruins couldn’t come away with a win against the Hurricanes on Saturday night, and poor special teams play was part of the problem. The Hurricanes scored their game-winner on a power play toward the end of the game, and the Bruins failed to capitalize on their opportunities in front of the net.

The loss to a struggling Carolina team makes it harder to make a case for the Bruins to be strong contenders to make a playoff run.

Bruins head coach Claude Julien said that his team played better in the first period Thursday night than they had all season. Unfortunately, Periods 2 and 3 didn’t go quite as well.

Boston couldn’t seem to muster any offense as they dropped a 2-1 decision to the New York Islanders, who have surprised everyone by going 9-1-1 in their last 11 games and would be a playoff team if the season ended today.

“We played pretty solid, still,” said Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask, who finished with 34 saves. “Considering it was the third game in four nights, I don’t think this was a bad game for us.”

The Bruins earned a much-needed win on Wednesday night over the Devils, and did so on the strength of their special teams.

The B’s struggled on the power play on Saturday night late in the game against the Canadiens, but they seemed to have shored everything up against the Devils.The key to the 5-4 win was the Bruins’ short-handed play — they scored two short-handed goals.

The Bruins had their most successful offensive performance of the season Monday night.

The Cam Ward-less Hurricanes were no match for the B’s relentless attack, as Boston’s retooled lineup gave Canes goalies Justin Peters and Dan Ellis fits with repeated wraparound attempts from behind the net.

The B’s second line was the most dangerous in the 6-2 win, with Jaromir Jagr, Gregory Campbell and Brad Marchand each tallying two points, and Andy Brickley joined NESN Daily after the game to break down just what made the combination so effective.

Given the recent offensive struggles for the Bruins, Claude Julien was forced to shake up the lines again for Monday night’s game. With the absence of Patrice Bergeron, the head coach decided to move Tyler Seguin down a line to relieve him of his centering duties.

Andy Brickley says it is not a demotion for Seguin, but an opportunity for him to focus on creating offense.

“You’ve got to free him up, you’ve got to play [Seguin] on the wing with a responsible centerman and let him concentrate on what he does best,” Brickley said during W.B. Mason Bruins Face-Off LIVE.

With Bergeron being such a vital component of this Bruins lineup, it will certainly present a challenge to Boston’s coaching staff to find goals from a struggling offense.

The Bruins dropped their final regular-season contest to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night 2-1. The Habs capitalized in the first few minutes of the match, which left the Bruins trailing throughout the entire contest.

Daniel Paille scored the lone goal for the B’s, who struggled to equalize the game. They were presented with an opportunity late in the game as the final second wound down. The Bruins got a power play in the final minute of the game, but were unable to capitalize. Jack Edwards told NESN Daily’s Leah Hextall that the Canadiens looked like “the more alert team, the quicker team, the hungrier team,” in the matchup.

The Bruins and Senators combined to take 97 shots Tuesday night — the most in a single game by any two NHL teams all season.

That massive shot total coupled with the loss of Patrice Bergeron, Boston’s best two-way forward, to injury in the second period seemed to set the stage for a wild shootout of a game at TD Garden. But thanks to strong play by both goaltenders — B’s goalie Anton Khudobin set a career high with 45 saves — three goals were enough to give the Bruins the win over their Northeast Division rivals.

Just one day before the NHL trade deadline, the Bruins finally made a splash, acquiring veteran winger Jaromir Jagr from the Dallas Stars for a pair of prospects and a draft pick.

Though Jagr, 41, becomes the oldest player on the Bruins roster (surpassing 38-year-old Jay Pandolfo), he also comes to Boston tied with Brad Marchand for the team lead in goals with 14. Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli addressed the trade prior to the team’s matchup with Ottawa on Tuesday, and he likened the addition of Jagr to Boston’s acquisition of another veteran forward, Mark Recchi, back in 2009.

Recchi provided a sturdy veteran presence in what was then a relatively young forward corps and played a key role in the Bruins’ Stanley Cup run in 2011. Chiarelli hopes Jagr will have a similar impact on this year’s squad.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are known for their explosive offense, but Sunday’s tilt with the Bruins was a defensive affair. The two teams combined for just three goals, and the game-winner came courtesy of an unlikely source.

Northeastern alum Joe Vitale scored for just the sixth time in his NHL career — and the first time since last February — with 32 seconds remaining in the first period to give Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead. Both teams proceeded to go scoreless the rest of the way, giving Pittsburgh its ninth consecutive win.
