Donald S. Stern. Physically: In l994, Dr. Donald Stern saved my life. I developed lung cancer and he diagnosed it. (He had urged me on several previous office visits to quit smoking and I had tried, but unsuccessfully.) Although it was fast-growing, since he had diagnosed the disease early, the surgery–removal of my right lung–excised all the cancer and I joined the more-than-grateful ranks of cancer survivors. Quite rare to battle this form of cancer and win. And I owe it all to him. Psychologically: From l997 to well into the next century, I battled another demon–and ever-increasing cancerous depression. It threatened to be bottomless: unable to be lifted even chemically with anti-depressants. I faced aging with only having raised one child–and given my background, one child was not enough. (Of course, by now, I knew that Donald and I loved each other, but the distance between us was so great, it only added to the seriousness of my situation.) From a distane over the years we worked to narrow the span–it feels as though he did most of the work–and today because of him, his love, his efforts–the depression has melted away. I no longer take mind-numbing medication. He gave me enduring Love unending Hope, and LIFE.

Healthy is mostly about how you feel on the ‘inside’. In my opinion, whether we’re talking about a professional athlete or average joe; a person has their own instinct on what is healthy for them. Keeping a well balanced diet and exercising when you feel like you want to and or/need to is always very important. The Red Sox seem to care for themselves and their teamates well! You can sometimes tell when an athlete (or whole team) has just played so MANY games in a row… they’re often tuckered out! And again, in my opinion that is healthy.. being aware of your bodies physical and mental wellness is the BIGGEST part of ‘being healthy’ and knowing when to let your self rest. (Sorry if this is lengthy : P )

This means thinking about many aspects of your life including what you eat, what types of activities you are involved in, and how to take of yourself by going for regular checkups with your doctor. Over the past few months, I realized that I was not moving enough. My life had become sedentary, and I had gained weight. I began losing weight by making healthier choices like eating fresh fruits and vegetables as well as better cuts of meat and having healthy snacks available if I got hungry during the day. I also began to move more with walking, and realizing that it was time to get up if I sat while on the computer for two long. I actually lost 14.5 pounds. So I would have to say that healthy is making the right choices and following through with them.

Healthy to me is a lifestyle choice. Living a healthy life encompasses eating healthy and exercising regularly. In my own personal life, I try to get a minimum of 20 minutes of cardio excercise three days a week in addition to tryign to eat healthy. Healthy foods to me are fruits, vegetables, grains etc..I believe that when you get regular excercise and eat healthy foods you will feel the difference and this will help to keep you on track and doing the right things to live a longer and healthier life.

Regular visits to the eye doctor, dentist and family doctor are expensive, but they are so important when it comes to early detection of any problem. Be aware of any changes in your body and be happy. Your attitude adds to your healthy maintenance.

I feel so much healthier and better about myself when I’ve worked up a sweat and can really feel my heart beating. In this past year, I’ve graduated college in Boston, and lost two close friends to Cancer. The happiese and worst days of my life have made me realize how fragile we all truly are, and how important it is to truly take care of our bodies and minds. The love my friends had for the outdoors and sports makes me want to be as healthy as possible, knowing that if they were able, they’d be right there with me. There are people out there who aren’t lucky enough to get out of bed, and the ones that are shouldn’t ever waste that opportunity, because it can be taken from you in a heartbeat.

ELIGIBILITY
NESN’s Healthy Is Sweepstakes (the “Sweepstakes”) is open to all legal residents of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont, who are 18 years of age or older as of April 1, 2011. Employees of New England Sports Network (“Sponsor”), Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and each of their respective divisions, affiliates, parent companies, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies (including immediate family members or those living in the same household of each) are not eligible to enter the Sweepstakes.
HOW TO ENTER
Visit NESN.com and find the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Healthy Is… section. At the bottom of each article, you are invited to fill in the “blank” by submitting a statement about what healthy is to you. Enter your name, address and email and then fill in your statement. Comments will be posted at the discretion of NESN.com’s editors, but everybody who registers between 12:00 PM on April 1, 2011 and 11:59 PM on September 29, 2011 will be eligible to win the Sweepstakes.
Only one (1) entry will be accepted per week per person/e-mail address. All entries become the property of Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned. Entry materials/data that have been tampered with or altered, or mass entries or entries generated by scripts, macro or use of automated devices are void.
DRAWING DATE/DEADLINE
One (1) potential prize winner per week will be determined in a random drawing every Friday beginning April 8, 2011 through September 30, 2011 from all eligible entries received during the previous week. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received each week. Decisions of Sponsor regarding the Sweepstakes are final.
Prizes (26)
Twenty-six (26) prize winners will receive the NESN Healthy Is Prize Package, which includes a ‘Property of NESN’ hooded sweatshirt and a NESN branded Igloo Playmate Gripper cooler. Retail value of prize = $60. Winner will be responsible for all expenses not specifically included herein, including but not limited to all applicable federal, state and local taxes. Prize is non-transferable and no substitution by winners or cash equivalent is allowed. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prize for one of equal or greater value.
PRIZE WINNER NOTIFICATION
The potential prize winners will be notified by letter delivered by UPS just after the drawing date. Winners will be required to sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility, Liability and Publicity Release. If notification is undeliverable for any reason, an alternate winner will be selected in a random drawing on the date that the return message is received by Sponsor.
RELEASE AND CONDITIONS
By entering, entrants agree to comply with these Official Rules and the decisions of the Sponsor, which are binding and final, and release Sponsor, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and each of their respective divisions, affiliates, parent companies, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies and anyone associated with the production of these Sweepstakes, and their respective directors, officers, employees and agents from any and all liability for any claims, injuries, losses or damages (including attorneys fees) of any kind arising out of their participation in this Sweepstakes or resulting from acceptance, possession, receipt, use or misuse of any prize, and entrants agree that these entities are in no matter responsible for any warranty, representation or guarantee, expressed or implied, in fact or in law, relating to the Sweepstakes and/or the awarding of any prize. It is the entrant’s responsibility to enter in the appropriate manner. Each entrant is responsible for all costs or charges involved in accessing the internet and warrants that the cost of accessing the internet, if any, is part of a larger agreement with an Internet Service Provider or some other means, and that the cost of this access is not an incremental cost.
