The Bruins are trying to get back to playing their style of hockey, as they look to climb out of the Eastern Conference cellar after a slow start to the season. They reverted to part of that style — maintaining a physical level of play — this past week.

The B's sporadic early-season schedule continued this weekwith only a pair of games, but they appeared willing to mix it up in both. They dropped one to the Habs in Montreal, but the two teams always play physically. The B's then used the momentum gained by fights from Shawn Thornton and Gregory Campbell to turn in one of their best efforts of the season in a win over the Senators on Tuesday.

The Bruins' season hasn't started the way the defending Stanley Cup champions had expected. The B's enter Saturday's game in Chicago owners of just a 1-3 record, as they have come out with uninspired efforts far too often.

Perhaps the Bruins would be best-suited to up their level of physical play to try and provide a spark going forward. The B's will enter Saturday's game with no fighting majors this season, a far cry from last year in which they racked up 71 during the regular season. It hasn't been for a total lack of trying, but Boston could stand to get a little more physical.

The physical play between the Bruins and the Canadiens continues to escalate with each additional matchup, and Tuesday's Game 6 featured one of the biggest hits of the series.

Milan Lucic was given a boarding major and a game misconduct penalty for his hit on Jaroslav Spacek early in the second period, and immediately threw up his hands in frustration as the referee made the call. Spacek cut his face on the glass due to the hit, but later returned to the game.

Lucic's wasn't the only hit in this matchup, as the tempers are definitely flaring between these two rival teams as they head into what is sure to be a heated Game 7 in Boston.

Zdeno Chara didn't let the recent incident at the Bell Centre affect his physical style of play on Thursday night.

The B's captain was, as usual, a solid force out on the ice. Chara was throwing his weight around and using his body to trap the Canadiens against the boards during battles in the corner.

The back-and-forth nature of Game 4 definitely contributed to the physical play on the ice, check out all the Bruins' Big Hits in the video above.

Benoit Pouliot connected with Johnny Boychuk on a late charge in the first period, and that didn't sit too well with Andrew Ference. He simply wouldn't let the Canadiens' left winger get away with the hit, and pulled him in for a fight during Game 3 in Montreal.

While there was no clear winner in this bout, Ference proves once again that he's not afraid to stand up for a teammate, no matter the opponent. Pouliot stands approximately five inches taller than Ference, but the B's defenseman got in a few good shots before taking him down to the ice.

Pouliot was given a charging penalty after the standoff with Ference while NESN's Andy Brickley, who played 14 seasons in the NHL, called the Hab's hit "gutless".

As you might expect, the Bruins-Devils affair on Sunday afternoon in New Jersey wasn’t exactly the hardest-hitting contest.

The B’s were trying to get out of the regular season with everyone healthy and accounted for, while the Devils were just trying to get out of the regular season.

Despite that, Adam McQuaid was still able to introduce his shoulder to David Clarkson.

Greg Campbell may not be the biggest player out on the ice, but he plays with no fear.

The Bruins center has continually proven this season that he's not afraid to take on any opponent that gets in his way, and he proved that once again on Monday night against the Rangers.

It was a chippy matchup with the Original Six rival, and the two tough lineups kept the physical play going throughout the game.

The Bruins clinched the Northeast Division on Saturday with their 3-2 win comeback over the Thrashers, but it was surely a battle to do so.

Midway through the matchup at the TD Garden, a scuffle broke out behind the Toronto net after Luke Schenn gave Mark Recchi a quick shove from behind after the whistle. The check sparked a tussle between the two teams, and Milan Lucic and Jay Rosehill paired off away from the group to drop the gloves.

While it was a fairly even bout, you can see that Lucic definitely gets in a few solid punches from the get-go, and the bloodied Rosehill doesn't look too happy as he skated off to the penalty box.

The Bruins were the beneficiaries of scheduling on Tuesday night when they welcomed the Chicago Blackhawks to town.

Chicago was playing one night after taking on their division rival Red Wings in Detroit on Monday night, and the Bruins made sure to take advantage of that by getting physical early and often.

Kris Versteeg was drafted by the Bruins. He’s also spent time with the Maple Leafs. Now, he plays for the Flyers. Simply put, he knows a thing or two about rivalries including the Bruins.

He infused himself into the Bruins-Flyers rivalry on Sunday night when he lined up Mark Recchi and delivered a strong check. Versteeg threw so much into the check that he ended up crashing to the ice along with Recchi.

It was kind of a rough day for Rangers forward Vinny Prospal.

Not only was he run into the boards by Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid, fellow B's blueliner Johnny Boychuk also brought the body to Prospal along the boards on Saturday.

It was Prospal and the Rangers who got the last laugh, though. Prospal assisted on the game's lone goal from Derek Stepan as New York stayed hot with a 1-0 win in Boston.

Paul Mara was looking for trouble on Thursday night, seeking out Bruins veteran Mark Recchi in hopes of roughing him up after his comments about Max Pacioretty's injury.

He didn't get much of a scrap in when he challenged Recchi in front of the net, but he had his hands full when he squared off with Greg Campbell at center ice.

The fight ended more or less in a draw, but the feisty Cambell kept Mara on his toes, and the Bruins' center ended up tearing Mara's jersey toward the end of the tussle. Campbell gets even more credit since he was standing up for his assistant captain in taking on Mara, who has a good three inches on the B's forward.

The Bruins game was hardly about getting physical with the New Jersey Devils, it was more about bouncing back after a tough stretch of six losses over the past seven games.

The B’s recovered with a 4-1 win over the Devils, and though there were minimal hits in the TD Garden matchup, there was one that nearly knocked Adam McQuaid off his feet.

McQuaid kept his balance, however, in a play worthy of three different camera angles on the night. Check out that play and the rest of the Bruins’ Big Hits in the video above.

You have to respect Nathan Horton for showing some fight on Saturday night (albeit late in the third period), but in the end, his face more or less summed up the Bruins' night.

Horton continued his growing rivalry with Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf in the third period of Toronto's 5-2 win in Toronto with a spirited bout late in the game.

When Horton finally got Phaneuf to drop his gloves — although not his helmet — it was Horton who ended up with a mean cut on his face.

If Big Z is going to change his style, he's not doing it yet.

Zdeno Chara had Jerred Smithson lined up for a hit at the end of the Predators bench on Thursday night, and he appeared ready to hit the big forward with all his might. Smithson, however, was more concerned with self-preservation than absorbing the hit from Chara.

Defenseman Steven Kampfer tried to throw down with Blake Geoffrion, but the Predator wasn't having any of that.

There were a few shoving matches and hits during the Bruins-Blue Jackets matchup on Tuesday night, but no one took as hard a hit as a Blue Jackets fan during an intermission contest.

The fan, dressed up as a hot dog, was racing up the ice in his sneakers trying to score a goal faster than his opponent. He was successful in the race, but not so successful in stopping. The hot dog lost his balance and smashed into the boards behind the net. The fan was OK after the fall, but his pride definitely took a hit.

Nathan Horton is known more for his scoring touch than his mean streak, but it's good to know that he has both qualities and uses them out on the ice.

The skilled forward opened the scoring in the first period with a nifty backhanded goal off a Milan Lucic rebound, and followed that up with a swift hit on Jack Hillen. The Islanders' defenseman didn't take too kindly to the hit, and immediately went after Horton, who was more than ready to drop the gloves for the battle.

The refs stepped in before the Hillen-Horton fight could take off, but it's always fun to watch Horton get a little chippy out on the ice. Check out all the Bruins Big Hits in the video above.

Milan Lucic hasn't had as many fights as we've seen in past seasons, but he still knows how to throw down the gloves.

Lucic laid down a dominant first punch in his bout with Sabres forward Cody McCormick, taking control early in the fight. McCormick dropped to the ice quickly, but Lucic pulled him back to his feet to drop a few more punches before McCormick could no longer stand.

Lucic wasn't the only one scrapping during the matchup against the Sabres. Greg Campbell and Adam McQuaid also picked up fighting majors in the game.

You probably only remember one hit from the Bruins-Canadiens matchup on Tuesday night, but it was quite the physical battle at the Bell Centre.

The B's and Habs came out in full force in the rematch of their thrilling Feb. 9 battle at the TD Garden. There weren't as many punches thrown during Tuesday's game, but one crushing hit sent a wave of silence through the Montreal crowd.

Zdeno Chara said he had had no intention of checking Max Pacioretty into the divider between the two benches, but the crushing hit sent the Canadiens' winger into the partition hard, and he left the ice on a stretcher. Chara was ejected with a game misconduct.
