The matchup between Bobby Orr’s goal and the Red Sox capping off their historic World Series win in 2004 came down to the very last minute, with 50.32 percent of the vote. It couldn’t have been any closer, which speaks to the torment fans no doubt felt when making their choice.

The tournament began with 64 moments from Boston sports lore, and the field was cut in half each week. In the semifinals, Orr’s goal beat Dave Roberts‘ steal of second, while the ’04 Sox’ victory edged out the Bruins’ 2011 Stanley Cup win.

Orr was the winner in last year’s tournament to determine Boston’s Biggest Sports Legend, when he beat out Bill Russell by an overwhelming margin. Clearly, this city will always love No. 4, Bobby Orr.

Red Sox win 2004 World SeriesBy now, every Red Sox fan probably has replayed Joe Castiglione’s call of the final out of the 2004 World Series in his or her head hundreds, maybe even thousands of times: "[Keith] Foulke to the set, the 1-0 pitch, here it is … swing and a ground ball, stabbed by Foulke. He has it. He underhands to first. And the Boston Red Sox are the world champions. For the first time in 86 years, the Red Sox have won baseball's world championship. Can you believe it?" For Red Sox fans — whether they had been followers for 10, 20, 50 or even 86 years – the moment was surreal. With a full moon over Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Boston’s beloved Red Sox were finally champs for the first time since 1918. Their sweep over the Cardinals ended that infamous curse and sparked one of the largest championship celebrations Boston has ever seen.

1. Bobby Orr scores 'The Goal'Bobby Orr may have all the characteristics of a red-blooded human being, but the Bruins defenseman looked like an angel of the ice when he flew through the air after scoring "The Goal" to win the 1970 Stanley Cup. In that moment at the Boston Garden, with thousands of Bruins fans watching in anticipation, he was a gift bestowed upon all of Boston by the hockey gods themselves. Indeed, no single NHL moment is frozen in time more than Orr taking flight like Superman. The vision occurred 40 seconds into overtime as Orr put the puck past goaltender Glenn Hall to win Game 4 — and complete the sweep — against the St. Louis Blues. The iconic moment has never thawed. It is perfect.

When Bobby Orr went horizontal after scoring the game-winning goal in Game 4 of the 1970 Stanley Cup Final, he gave the Bruins a sweep of the Blues and gave fans an image that has lasted for decades.

Two moments, frozen in history, will vie for the hearts of New Englanders in the Boston's Greatest Sports Moment championship.

It's hard to argue with either moment's worthiness as a finalist. Some day, Varitek's celebration — or Dave Roberts' steal, or Curt Schilling's bloody sock, or any other moment from that epic quest for the title — may be immortalized in a statue, just as Orr's leap is outside the TD Garden. Both moments redefined what it meant to be a fan of the teams, and time surely will never dull their shine.

See below to vote for Boston's Greatest Sports Moment and the review the voting from the whole tournament.

That, however, was the question posed in the semifinals of Boston's Greatest Sports Moment. Though the more recent events have often had the upper hand in these matchups, fans picked the '04 breaking of the curse over the Cup.

It was a tight race, though, as the Bruins did garner 41 percent of the vote.

On the other side of the bracket, Bobby Orr's goal continued to roll right through the competition, as it beat Dave Roberts' slide by a 61-39 margin. It was the tightest race of The Goal's journey, as he received an average of 79 percent in his first four BGSM matchups.

2. Bruins win 2011 Stanley CupThe Boston Bruins entered the 2011 Stanley Cup Final with the second-longest championship drought in Boston sports history. Matched up against the Vancouver Canucks, who finished the season with the best regular-season record, the B's found themselves having to overcome hardships immediately. Boston lost the first two games of the series after being bullied (and bitten) in Vancouver. Additionally, the B's lost postseason hero Nathan Horton early in Game 3 on a late hit by Aaron Rome. The questionable check awoke the bear, though, as the Bruins exploded for 12 goals combined in Games 3 and 4. After dropping Game 5, goalie Tim Thomas carried Boston in the final two wins, including a shutout in Game 7, to give the Boston Bruins their first championship in 39 years.

Bobby Orr scores ‘The Goal’Bobby Orr may have all the characteristics of a red-blooded human being, but the Bruins defenseman looked like an angel of the ice when he flew through the air after scoring “The Goal” to win the 1970 Stanley Cup.

2. Dave Roberts pulls off ‘The Steal’The whole world knew he was going to steal second base. After Kevin Millar drew a walk in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, that’s exactly what Dave Roberts did. With the Red Sox down 4-3 and facing elimination, 90 feet never looked so far. After nearly getting picked off, Roberts took off on Mariano Rivera’s first pitch to Bill Mueller. Jorge Posada threw a strike to a covering Derek Jeter, but the left hand of Roberts beat the tag. Mueller singled, and Roberts finished off what is now known as “The Steal” by scoring the tying run. The steal sparked the greatest comeback in Red Sox history, as Boston took Game 4 and won four straight en route to capturing the American League pennant.

Only two will move on and have a chance to be crowned Boston's Greatest Sports Moment.

The region champs include two historic moments each for the Red Sox and Bruins: The 2004 Red Sox team that broke an 86-year curse by winning the World Series. The 2011 Bruins team that snapped a 39-year drought to bring the Stanley Cup back to the Hub. The 1970 goal by Bobby Orr that completed a sweep of the St. Louis Blues in the Cup final. The steal by Dave Roberts in Game 4 of the 2004 American League Championship Series that propelled the Red Sox to the greatest comeback in sports history.

All that's asked of you is to deem two of these superior to the others. True, it's not an easy decision. That's why we've asked your help.

Granted, it wasn't a monumental upset, as it was a two-seed edging a one-seed, but the Bruins' 2011 Stanley Cup victory earned a win over the Patriots' game-winning drive in Super Bowl XXXVI. The voting was close, with 55 percent of the votes going to the B's, but the day that officially started a Patriots dynasty is no longer alive in the tournament, which is now down to four moments.

The rest of the field is made up of two more one-seeds and another two-seed. Dave Roberts' steal beat Adam Vinatieri's Snow Bowl kick by a 58-42 margin. Bobby Orr's goal went up against Carlton Fisk's iconic wave at Fenway, but Orr received 80 percent of the vote. Lastly, the Red Sox' curse-busting World Series win in '04 beat the memorable moment between Ray Bourque and Phil Esposito at the Garden by a 61-39 margin.

The stage is now set for an epic final four in a tournament that proves to only get tougher as time goes on.

Ray Bourque gives No. 7 to Phil EspositoCall this moment the ultimate sign of respect. The Boston Bruins planned to retire two-time Stanley Cup champion and Hall of Famer Phil Esposito’s number on Dec. 3, 1987. The only problem? His No. 7 was being worn by the B’s captain at the time, Ray Bourque. Bourque, already a six-time All-Star himself, came up with a solution. During the pregame ceremony for Esposito at the Boston Garden, Bourque removed his own No. 7 jersey for the last time, proudly displaying his new No. 77 as the Garden crowd erupted into a long, loud ovation. Esposito thanked the young Bruins captain before watching his No. 7 jersey rise to the rafters. Bourque, meanwhile, held on to No. 77 for the final 12 years of his career in both Boston and Colorado.

Bobby Orr scores ‘The Goal’Bobby Orr may have all the characteristics of a red-blooded human being, but the Bruins defenseman looked like an angel of the ice when he flew through the air after scoring “The Goal” to win the 1970 Stanley Cup.

Carlton Fisk waves home run fairCarlton Fisk knew it. Really, everyone watching knew. Fisk’s shot down the left-field line at Fenway Park in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series had the distance, but would it stay fair? Fisk hopped down the first-base line using both arms to wave the ball fair, and the ball clunked off the foul pole to give the Red Sox a walk-off win and force Game 7 against the Cincinnati Reds. The Sox lost Game 7, but Fisk’s home run lives on as one of the most iconic moments in Boston sports and baseball history. His shot off Pat Darcy changed the way television stations broadcast baseball games. Cameramen at the time were taught to follow the ball, but NBC cameraman Lou Gerard later said he was distracted by a rat so instead kept the camera pointed at Fisk, who was in the midst of his memorable wave. The rest, as they say, is history.

Dave Roberts pulls off 'The Steal'The whole world knew he was going to steal second base. After Kevin Millar drew a walk in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, that's exactly what Dave Roberts did. With the Red Sox down 4-3 and facing elimination, 90 feet never looked so far. After nearly getting picked off, Roberts took off on Mariano Rivera's first pitch to Bill Mueller. Jorge Posada threw a strike to a covering Derek Jeter, but the left hand of Roberts beat the tag. Mueller singled, and Roberts finished off what is now known as "The Steal" by scoring the tying run. The steal sparked the greatest comeback in Red Sox history, as Boston took Game 4 and won four straight en route to capturing the American League pennant.

Vinatieri's game-tying 'Snow Bowl' field goalDoing anything outside when it's snowing is difficult. It's even harder to play football in the snow. Kicking a 45-yard field goal in the snow? Forget about it, right? Well, not if you're Adam Vinatieri. Vinatieri made kicking in the snow look easy in a 2002 AFC divisional playoff game against the Oakland Raiders in New England. During a game that would later be referred to as the "Snow Bowl," or the "Tuck Rule Game," Vinatieri kicked a 45-yard field goal to tie the game 13-13 with under a minute remaining in the fourth quarter. The game eventually went to overtime, and Vinatieri again saved the Pats with his leg, kicking a 23-yard field goal to win the game. The Patriots would go on to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history later that postseason.

Patriots’ final drive to win Super Bowl XXXVIThe Patriots’ and Boston’s rise to power in the sports world can be traced back to Super Bowl XXXVI, when the underdog Patriots faced the heavily favored St. Louis Rams. The importance of the game never fazed the Patriots, not even when the game was tied 17-17 late in the fourth quarter. The Patriots got the ball for their last drive, and all they needed was to get within kicker Adam Vinatieri’s range. To accomplish the task, Tom Brady slung the ball to his receiving corps in a series of short passes that ate up yardage and took just the right amount of time off the clock. Finally, with seven seconds left, Brady spiked the ball and Vinatieri came out to attempt one of the biggest kicks of his career. His 48-yard field goal was spot-on, bringing home New England’s first Super Bowl and Boston’s first championship since 1986.

Bruins win 2011 Stanley CupThe Boston Bruins entered the 2011 Stanley Cup Final with the second-longest championship drought in Boston sports history. Matched up against the Vancouver Canucks, who finished the season with the best regular-season record, the B’s found themselves having to overcome hardships immediately. Boston lost the first two games of the series after being bullied (and bitten) in Vancouver. Additionally, the B’s lost postseason hero Nathan Horton early in Game 3 on a late hit by Aaron Rome.

Three top seeds are among the final eight in the bracket. The lone exception is in the North End region, where Dave Roberts' Game 4 steal goes up against Adam Vinatieri's 'Snow Bowl' kick.

Those No. 1 seeds should not expect an easy waltz into the next round, however. Ray Bourque's gesture of giving the No. 7 sweater to Phil Esposito has had a Cinderella run, and it could be in line for another huge upset against the Red Sox' 2004 World Series championship.

Two iconic moments from history face off in Beacon Hill, where Bobby Orr's flying goal to win the 1970 Stanley Cup and Carlton Fisk waving the ball fair in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series meet up. And two recent titles, the Patriots' Super Bowl XXXVI victory and the Bruins' 2011 Stanley Cup, collide in the Back Bay region.

6. Jason Varitek, Alex Rodriguez Fenway brawlThis moment was the first time the Yankees got socked in the mouth by the Red Sox in 2004, but it certainly wasn’t the last. On July 24, Jason Varitek gladly welcomed Alex Rodriguez to the fiercest rivalry in baseball. After getting hit by a Bronson Arroyo pitch in the top of the third inning, A-Rod began jawing at the pitcher. Varitek, the consummate captain, took exception and began to throw some R-rated words A-Rod’s way. Varitek then punched Rodriguez in the face with his mitt, promptly starting a benches-clearing brawl. Both players were ejected, but Varitek and the Red Sox got the last laugh, winning the game 11-10. They also got the last laugh that October, famously coming back from down three games to none to beat the Yankees in the AL championship series.

12. ‘The Save’Tim Thomas transformed into a Boston legend during the 2011 NHL playoffs by leading the Bruins to their first Stanley Cup championship in 39 years. Thomas won the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP and made countless tremendous saves, but few were more incredible -– or more important — than the one on Tampa Bay’s Steve Downie in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals. With Boston holding a 2-1 lead early in the third period and the series tied 2-2, Downie controlled a rebound off the end boards and shot on a wide-open net. Thomas would not be beaten, however, as he dove to his right across the crease, just barely tipping away the puck with the end of his stick. “The Save” enabled the B’s to hold on to win Game 5 and eventually win the series in seven games.

Tuck rule playWhenever a team wins a championship, people often can look back on one moment and wonder, “What if that had turned out differently?” For the 2001 New England Patriots, the “tuck rule” call was that moment. The scene was Foxboro Stadium on Jan. 19, 2002, the Patriots hosting Raiders in an AFC divisional playoff game. Oakland took a 13-10 lead into the final two minutes of the fourth quarter as heavy snowfall continued to layer the field’s surface. With Patriots quarterback Tom Brady attempting to lead a game-saving drive, Raiders cornerback Charles Woodson sacked Brady, who appeared to fumble the ball — and the Patriots’ season — in the process. After reviewing the play, officials determined that Brady’s arm was continuing a forward movement, therefore making the pass incomplete. Thanks to the “tuck rule,” the Patriots maintained possession. Adam Vinatieri went on to kick a game-tying field goal, along with the game-winner in overtime, and the Patriots kept marching on that postseason all the way to their first Super Bowl championship.

Cam Neely scores 50 in 44 games50 in 50. That may sound like another ESPN special, but to hockey fans, the numbers represent a very significant achievement that only eight players have ever accomplished — scoring 50 goals in a team’s first 50 games of an NHL season. Bruins great Cam Neely scored his 50th goal in his 44th game of the 1993-94 season, etching his name in Boston sports history. Neely may not be recognized across the NHL as an official 50-in-50 player because his 50th goal came in the Bruins’ 66th game overall (due to Neely’s injury battles), but the big forward with a knack for taking over games will always hold a special place in the hearts of Bruins fans. The great No. 8, who now serves as the team’s president, is tied with Mario Lemieux as the second-fastest player to reach 50 goals in a season behind Wayne Gretzky.

Pedro’s 1999 ALDS Game 5 performancePedro Martinez was one of the most dominating starting pitchers in Red Sox history. But Martinez’s most memorable performance came in relief. During the 1999 ALDS against the Cleveland Indians, Martinez left his start in Game 1 after only four innings with back problems, and his status for the rest of the series was questionable. But in the series’ decisive Game 5, with the game tied 8-8, Martinez stepped up out of the bullpen when the Red Sox needed him most. He pitched an unbelievable six no-hit innings with eight strikeouts, giving the Red Sox a victory and a chance to face the Yankees in the ALCS. In a season in which Martinez went 23-4 and earned the first of back-to-back Cy Young Awards, his relief performance in Game 5 was the defining moment for many Boston sports fans.

Vinatieri’s game-tying ‘Snow Bowl’ field goalDoing anything outside when it’s snowing is difficult. It’s even harder to play football in the snow. Kicking a 45-yard field goal in the snow? Forget about it, right? Well, not if you’re Adam Vinatieri. Vinatieri made kicking in the snow look easy in a 2002 AFC divisional playoff game against the Oakland Raiders in New England. During a game that would later be referred to as the “Snow Bowl,” or the “Tuck Rule Game,” Vinatieri kicked a 45-yard field goal to tie the game 13-13 with under a minute remaining in the fourth quarter. The game eventually went to overtime, and Vinatieri again saved the Pats with his leg, kicking a 23-yard field goal to win the game. The Patriots would go on to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history later that postseason.

Red Sox win 2004 World SeriesBy now, every Red Sox fan probably has replayed Joe Castiglione’s call of the final out of the 2004 World Series in his or her head hundreds, maybe even thousands of times: “[Keith] Foulke to the set, the 1-0 pitch, here it is … swing and a ground ball, stabbed by Foulke. He has it. He underhands to first. And the Boston Red Sox are the world champions. For the first time in 86 years, the Red Sox have won baseball’s world championship. Can you believe it?” For Red Sox fans — whether they had been followers for 10, 20, 50 or even 86 years – the moment was surreal. With a full moon over Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Boston’s beloved Red Sox were finally champs for the first time since 1918. Their sweep over the Cardinals ended that infamous curse and sparked one of the largest championship celebrations Boston has ever seen.

Rocky Marciano retires with 49-0 recordPaper may beat rock in playground contests of rock-paper-scissors, but no one could beat “The Rock” in the boxing ring. Rocky Marciano came out from the locker room, ducked under the ropes and stepped onto the canvas 49 times. And 49 times, the Brockton, Mass., native walked away the winner. Marciano beat all challengers, including Jersey Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore. Not only that, but in 43 fights, the Brockton Blockbuster left his opponent down and out for the count on the mat. On April 27, 1956, the reigning heavyweight champion of the world — he held the title for nearly four years — announced his retirement. Now that’s what you call going out on top.
