Others just wear a number they believe is lucky.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, we've narrowed down the best athletes to wear No. 5 in the professional sports world.

Some of the best No. 5s have played under the Boston microscope. Nomar Garciaparra played a stellar shortstop for the Red Sox for parts of nine seasons, and Kevin Garnett has made a name for himself and the Celtics with an NBA title to his credit.

Other greats include the 56-game hitting streak holder, Joe DiMaggio, and new Angels first baseman Albert Pujols, who is destined to be ushered into the Hall of Fame whenever his career comes to a close.

But who are the top 10 athletes to don the number?

Click here to see a list of the Top 10 athletes to wear No. 5 >>

Mariano Rivera, the New York Yankees All-Star closer, appears to have torn his ACL and will be done for the season, according to ESPN.

Rivera was carted off the field in Kansas City on Thursday, after coming up limp while fielding some flyballs in the outfield prior to first pitch at Kauffman Stadium.

The 42-year-old was runnign towards the outfield wall in pursuit of a ball hi by new Yankee teammate Jayson Nix when the injury occurred. Rivera leaped to try and make a play on the ball, but as he landed awkwardly on the warning track his right knee buckled.

As Rivera lay on the ground, teammate and former MVP Alex Rodriguez could be seen reacting to the scene, saying "Oh, my God. Oh, my God."

Rivera was carted off the field, unable to walk under his own power. The unfortunate circumstances could mark a terrible end to an illustrious Hall of Fame Career, as Rivera will turn 43 this offseason.

The Yankees must now turn to either former closer Rafael Soriano or setup man Dave Robertson to finish off games in the dreaded American League East.

When asked about the situation with Rivera, manager Joe Girardi responded in short by saying "It's not what you want, but it's not season over," referring to the Yankees season.

In nine appearances this season, Rivera is 1-1 with a 2.16 ERA and five saves in six chances for the Yankees.

Bobby Wagner, a senior linebacker from Utah State, was drafted in the second round (47th overall) by the Seattle Seahawks on Friday, and he got the important phone call while in the bathroom, according to ABC 4 Sports in Salt Lake City.

"I was actually in the bathroom when I got the phone call," Wagner said. "I was on the way to the bathroom when I got a call from my agent, and then I got a call from a Seattle number and I never got to go to the bathroom. I finally got to go. We got the phone call right before the pick and I got to tell them and everybody screamed. When my name went across the screen, everybody screamed again."

Wilson led the Aggies with 147 tackles in 2011.

While Wilson's primary concern is now winning a starting job, he at least doesn't have to worry about holding it in anymore.

In the second round of the NFL draft on Friday night, Denver picked quarterback Brock Osweiler with the 25th pick — 57th overall. The former Arizona State quarterback only spent one full season as a starter in college.

In 2011, he finished 326-of-516 for 4,036 yards and 26 touchdowns. In 2009 and 2010, he was mainly used as a backup and played a total of 11 games.

With Tebow out of the picture, after being traded to the New York Jets, the Broncos needed another signal caller to be the understudy and eventually take the reigns from Peyton Manning.

Manning is coming off of multiple neck surgeries and Denver needs to have a backup in case something happens to re-aggravate the injury.

No one wants to see Manning go down, but it is good to have a backup plan.

This is not the first time the Heisman winner wore some interesting items on his feet, however.

During the Heisman Trophy acceptance, Griffin wore Superman socks that really showed off his flare for stockings. The socks had the Superman logo on the front and a red cape on the back.

Michael Yormack, the President and CEO of the Florida Panthers, called out the fans for throwing plastic rats onto the ice on his Twitter page.

"Great win, but fans we cannot throw rats during the game," Yormack posted on Twitter. "This has become a serious issue."

Panthers fans showed their excitement for a goal on Saturday against the New Jersey Devils by throwing rats on the ice. No actions or calls were made the officials, according to NBC Sports.

The rats can be seen behind Ed Jovanovski, who looked a little weirded out, and goalie Jose Theodore as they celebrate after the win.

A perfect game is even harder to accomplish.

Chicago White Sox starter Philip Humber managed to toss a perfect game on Saturday, though. He threw 96 pitches and struck out nine batters in a 4-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

Humber is the 21st pitcher in major league history to pitch a perfect game. He joins a prestigious list that includes the likes of Cy Young, Kenny Rogers and Roy Halladay.

Humber may not have the best "stuff," but he had enough to take down the weak offense of the Mariners on Saturday.

Fans were welcomed by current players and alumni from the Red Sox throughout the day. Dustin Pedroia, Darnell McDonald and Daniel Bard were in attendance from the 2012 roster for signings. Former Red Sox players included Frank Malzone, John Tudor, Bernie Carbo, and Oil Can Boyd, who were all available for autographs.

"It was very humbling, and you don't necessarily feel worthy," Tebow said. "That day I feel like I've got to do a few extra things to be special, you know? I've got to try to be a little bit better."

The couple plans to spend the day with Tebow and underprivileged children near their home in the Florida Keys.

Jack Colton moved the runner to second with a sacrifice bunt, Steve Dill flew out to right and Ethan Ferreira struck out looking to end the inning.

End 3rd, Harvard 3-1: An error from Ethan Ferreira allowed John Hennessy to score from first for the only run of the game so far for BC.

After Andrew Lawrence ground out to second, Hennessy and Tom Bourdon hit consecutive singles, but Ferreira butchered the single to right that allowed Hennessy to score from first.

With Bourdon on third, Blake Butera failed a safety squeeze. After a full count walk to Matt McGovern, Anthony Melchiando lined out to center to end the rally.

Mid 3rd, Harvard 3-0: An error cost the Eagles in the inning.

Jake McGuiggan continued his hot streak as he led off the inning with a single. He is now 2-for-2 on the afternoon. Mike Martin reached on an errant throw from the pitcher after laying a sacrifice bunt down and runners were safe on first and second with nobody out.

Kyle Larrow got the runners to second and third with a successful sacrifice to first. Jon Smart drove in the lone run in the inning with a sacrifice fly to right.

Nick Saathoff took a called third strike to end the inning.

End 2nd, Harvard 2-0: Rob Moir flew out for the first out of the inning, but Anthony Melchiado took off early from first and was called out for the double play. Melchiado led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch.

Spenser Payne then hit a double to right before Matt Pare flew out to left for the final out to end the inning.

Mid 2nd, Harvard 2-0: Another scoring chance for Harvard, but Ethan Ferreira struck out with the bases loaded to end the top half of the second.

1 p.m. ET: The Boston College Eagles (13-19, 4-11 ACC) will look to defeat a Harvard Crimson (5-22, 2-6 IVY) team that won 5-3 against them back on Wednesday, April 4. Jacob Kremers (1-1) got the win with two shutout innings of work. Both teams are on losing streaks — four for BC and three for Harvard — and one team needs the win for the push in the right direction.

Harvard broke out their bats in the bottom of the third inning with three runs on two hits last Wednesday. Steve Green (0-4) walked the first two batters in the inning before the Crimson scored their three runs on a groundout and a base hit from Steven Dill.

In this matchup, look for Anthony Melchionda and Tom Bourdon to get the big hits for BC. They have combined for 10 home runs and 41 RBIs. Harvard has no batter who has more than two homers, so expect to see a lot of small ball with the Crimson throughout the game.
