It has been 22 years since the Bruins and the Penguins have faced off in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but the playoff history between Boston and Pittsburgh dates back even further than that.

It dates back to a time when the Pens were in blue and white, matching up against the NHL’s original black and gold team. Future hall of famer Jaromir Jagr, now 41, was a part of that history as an 18-year old rookie playing for the Penguins against the Bruins in the 1991 Prince of Wales Conference Championship.

To hear more about the playoff history between the two teams, check out the video above.

There has been much anticipation for the Eastern Conference finals, as the Boston Bruins and the Pittsburgh Penguins face off after a week-long wait. The Bruins are coming off of a 4-1 series win over the New York Rangers, and the Penguins defeated the Ottawa Senators in 4-1 fashion, as well.

Despite Pittsburgh having swept Boston in the regular season, the Bruins are prepared to play the series with physicality and the same mental toughness that has gotten them this far in the playoffs. Players expect the defensive plan to remain the same, even against the No. 1 seed. To hear what Torey Krug and Matt Bartkowski had to say before Game 1 about the matchup, watch the video above.

Brad Marchand is affectionately known as the “Little Ball of Hate” around Boston. He is sure to have many more colorful nicknames elsewhere if you ask fans in other cities.

The Bruins forward has made a living in the postseason drawing the ire of opposing teams and fanbases alike, and the 2013 campaign has been no different. This time, it is the Rangers’ Derick Brassard who has been the focus of much mischief, although Marchand has done a good job of staying out of trouble for the most part against New York.

MSG broadcaster John Giannone joined the Bruins Face-Off LIVE crew before Game 5 to discuss Marchand’s play against the Blueshirts so far in the series. Check it out in the video above or on NESN’s YouTube channel.

It seems like nothing can shake Zdeno Chara.

The Bruins’ captain has been playing exceptionally well despite lining up next to some fresh faces. With Andrew Ference, Dennis Seidenberg and Wade Redden out due to injuries, Dougie Hamilton, Torrey Krug and Matt Bartkowski have been filling in — and Chara hasn’t skipped a beat.

Chara has two goals and eight assists this postseason with 30:02 average time on ice. Chara’s general manager said the defenseman has been “a monster” this postseason.

Check out the video above or go to NESN’s YouTube channel to hear Jack Edwards talk to Peter Chiarelli about Chara and how the Bruins’ postseason experience may help them late in games.

The Bruins came dangerously close to a very disappointing first-round exit earlier this week, needing a historic comeback to prevent the Maple Leafs from taking the series after trailing three games to one.

B’s head coach Claude Julien said that near-collapse is nowhere near his players’ minds as the team prepares to take on the New York Rangers, though, and that his team is instead looking at Game 7 only as a positive.

Bruins great Cam Neely joined NESN’s Jack Edwards prior to Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Thursday to take one more look back at Monday’s monumental win and preview what can be expected from the Rangers.

Check it out in the video above.

The Maple Leafs made some noise that the Bruins were “cheating” during faceoffs after Boston’s Game 3 victory, but it’s looking more and more like a case of sour grapes. After all, “cheating” during faceoffs is a time-honored tradition in the NHL, and the Bruins aren’t likely to change any face-off strategy for Game 4 in response to Toronto’s complaining.

NESN’s Dale Arnold, Tom Caron and Barry Pederson took some time before Wednesday’s game to break down how the Bruins might be bending the rules at the dot to their advantage. Check out the demonstration in the video above.

Andrew Ference was suspended for Game 2 of the Bruins-Maple Leafs playoff series for a check to the head of Mikhail Grabovski. However, Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf did not even have a hearing with NHL suspension honcho Brendan Shanahan after a questionable hit against Daniel Paille.

Add that to the lack of discipline for anyone involved the Senators-Canadiens brawl on Sunday night, and the league is suddenly entering dangerous waters. The inconsistent nature of when a suspension is or isn’t doled out has the potential to poison fans against the league’s authorities, and cynical conspiracy theorists can have a field day with the decisions coming down from Toronto.

NESN’s Barry Pederson and Dale Arnold discussed the issue before the Bruins and Maple Leafs took the ice for Game 3 in Toronto. Check out what they had to say in the above video.

After a positive showing in Thursday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Bruins are looking for consistency Saturday night against the Capitals.

With the No. 2 seed and the division title on the line, the B’s are showing more intensity and physicality on the ice, demonstrated by a gritty 60-minute performance in the 2-0 win over the Lightning. The team will need all the hustle it can muster because no one on the squad gets a “rest game” against the Capitals on Saturday night.

Hear what Dennis Seidenberg had to say about the team’s momentum in the video above.

As far as playoff implications go, the Bruins’ final three games do have huge significance. It remains to be determined whether the B’s will beat out Montreal for the Northeast Division crown and the No. 2 seed, but they are guaranteed a spot in the postseason.

Boston would certainly like to gain some momentum heading into the playoffs, though, as the team has dropped five of its last six games entering Thursday night. Their next opponent will be the Tampa Bay Lightning, and this is a very different Bolts squad than the one that came within a game of the Stanley Cup Final just two years ago.

With just 40 points on the season, Tampa Bay sits second to last in the Eastern Conference. The Lightning do boast the third-best offense in the league, however, with Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos ranking first and second, respectively, in points.

For a closer look at the tilt between the soon-to-be division foes, check out the video above.

The Bruins’ defensive corps was bolstered Thursday with the return of Adam McQuaid. The excitement over the blueliner’s return was muted, however, as the team will be without top scorer Brad Marchand, who left Monday’s game in New Jersey with a concussion.

Like it has to many NHL teams in this lockout-shortened season, the compressed schedule has taken its toll on the Bruins’ health. McQuaid and Chris Kelly both missed significant time before recently returning to the lineup, and two of the Boston’s best forwards, Marchand and Patrice Bergeron, are currently on the shelf with head injuries.

The B’s addressed these issues prior to Monday night’s game against the surging Islanders. See what they had to say in the video above.

Given the recent offensive struggles for the Bruins, Claude Julien was forced to shake up the lines again for Monday night’s game. With the absence of Patrice Bergeron, the head coach decided to move Tyler Seguin down a line to relieve him of his centering duties.

Andy Brickley says it is not a demotion for Seguin, but an opportunity for him to focus on creating offense.

“You’ve got to free him up, you’ve got to play [Seguin] on the wing with a responsible centerman and let him concentrate on what he does best,” Brickley said during W.B. Mason Bruins Face-Off LIVE.

With Bergeron being such a vital component of this Bruins lineup, it will certainly present a challenge to Boston’s coaching staff to find goals from a struggling offense.

Check out Brick’s full analysis in the video above.

The Bruins took some time out before Saturday night’s game to answer questions from the Minuteman Flames, an elite pee wee hockey team based in Mass. The players asked questions ranging from position-specific tips to what type of pump-up music members of the Bruins listen to before games.

Bruins rookie defenseman Dougie Hamilton encouraged the young hockey stars to play other sports besides hockey in order to step away and have some fun. Tyler Seguin revealed that his favorite cities to play in are his hometown of Toronto and in Montreal, where the B’s dropped Saturday night’s game 2-1.

Check out the video above to see what other nuggets the Bruins players offered up.

Two new Bruins hit the TD Garden ice for the first time Thursday night as Jaromir Jagr and Kaspars Daugavins made their debuts in black and gold against the Devils.

It has been a stressful week for Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli, who orchestrated the trade with Dallas for Jagr after a deal with Calgary for winger Jarome Iginla fell through at the last moment. Chiarelli joined Dale Arnold and Billy Jaffe during W.B. Mason Bruins Face-Off LIVE to discuss the team’s new additions (Jagr, Daugavins and former Blues defenseman Wade Redden) and give an update on Patrice Bergeron‘s status.

Check out Chiarelli’s full interview in the video above.

Just one day before the NHL trade deadline, the Bruins finally made a splash, acquiring veteran winger Jaromir Jagr from the Dallas Stars for a pair of prospects and a draft pick.

Though Jagr, 41, becomes the oldest player on the Bruins roster (surpassing 38-year-old Jay Pandolfo), he also comes to Boston tied with Brad Marchand for the team lead in goals with 14. Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli addressed the trade prior to the team’s matchup with Ottawa on Tuesday, and he likened the addition of Jagr to Boston’s acquisition of another veteran forward, Mark Recchi, back in 2009.

Recchi provided a sturdy veteran presence in what was then a relatively young forward corps and played a key role in the Bruins’ Stanley Cup run in 2011. Chiarelli hopes Jagr will have a similar impact on this year’s squad.

For more from Chiarelli’s press conference, plus Andy Brickley‘s breakdown of the trade, check out the video above.

Claude Julien-coached teams have traditionally been known for their ability put pucks in the net no matter which line is on the ice. That sort of balanced attack has been absent from this year’s Bruins squad, though, and the B’s will need to drum up some production from the third and fourth lines if they want to break out of their recent funk.

“When we’re successful, when we’re at our best, we have all 20 guys going at the same time.” Bruins winger Milan Lucic said prior to Sunday night’s game in Buffalo. “I think that right now is what we’re trying to create in our game, and trying to create some excitement in our game, as well. It’s up to us as players to do that.”

For more from Lucic and teammate Jay Pandolfo, check out the above clip from W.B. Mason Bruins Face-Off Live.

Tyler Seguin can make an immediate impact on the ice, where turnovers can turn into scoring chances very quickly thanks to the young forward’s speed. A more aggressive Seguin could almost single-handedly fix the offensive issues the Bruins have dealt with all season.

Seguin is back on the same line with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand after some experimenting by Claude Julien, putting the Bruins’ best offensive line back together. Seguin showed his value with three points against Montreal, but he and Marchand need to keep moving to prevent the Bruins’ offense from falling into ruts.

Check out Barry Pederson‘s thoughts on Seguin in Bruins Face-Off LIVE in the video above.
