Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal against the Maple Leafs seemed to be a turning point for the Bruins. Since that game, the team has seemingly not let their foot off of the gas, taking Round 2 four games to one over the New York Rangers.

Head coach Claude Julien attributed his team’s success to their hard work and increased consistency after the Round 1 series.

Tyler Seguin turned in his best performance of the postseason Thursday night, tallying a goal and an assist and tying for the team lead with six shots on goal, but a mental error on his part proved costly in the Bruins’ 4-3 loss to the Rangers.

Just 49 seconds after giving Boston a 3-2 lead midway through the third period, Seguin jumped out early for his next shift, drawing a two-minute penalty for too many men on the ice. New York’s Brian Boyle scored on the ensuing power play, tying the game with exactly 10 minutes to play in regulation. The Rangers would eventually win in overtime to stave off elimination in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Bruins’ blue line looked much greener than usual Thursday night.

After being struck by injury late in last week’s first-round series, Boston started three rookie defensemen — Dougie Hamilton, Matt Bartkowski and Torey Krug — for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Rangers.

It was the first time since 1985 that the B’s played three first-year blueliners in a playoff game, but the young guns held their own. Hamilton and Krug both found their way onto the scoresheet, with Hamilton logging an assist and Krug beating Henrik Lundqvist for his first NHL goal as the Bruins claimed a 3-2 overtime win.

Claude Julien summed up the Bruins’ Game 2 loss to the Maple Leafs as “one of those games,” and it’s hard not to agree with him after the final horn.

Boston had several good chances against Toronto but failed to capitalize, while the Maple Leafs took advantage of some of the Bruins’ mistakes en route to a 4-2 victory. While speaking with NESN’s Naoko Funayama after the game, Julien stressed the need to turn the next page while pointing out that it is a seven-game series that will determine a winner.

The Bruins weren’t able to clinch the Northeast Division title on Monday night, but head coach Claude Julien still thinks his team is in a great position heading into the playoffs.

The B’s got opportunities in the match, but were unable to capitalize on enough of them to pull ahead of the Senators for the win. Julien recognized his team’s lack of scoring prowess as an area of weakness that will need improvement heading into the playoffs.

The Bruins gave up another third period lead on Saturday night against the Capitals, dropping the match 3-2.

But the loss wasn’t completely detrimental to the B’s place in the Northeast standings. They take on the Ottawa Sentaors Sunday night in their final game of the regular season, and in a number of scenarios, the Bruins could still clinch first place in the division.

Even in the loss, head coach Claude Julien saw areas of improvement within his team that he was pleased with.

Bruins fans worried about Milan Lucic didn’t have much reason for concern after the forward’s play on Thursday night in Boston.

While Lucic did not score, his impact was felt in ways beyond the box score, as he returned to his old physical ways and even was involved in a fight with the Lightning’s Keith Aulie. It was a clear display that Lucic hasn’t lost his edge this season, and a positive sign for the Bruins as the playoffs near.

Turnovers were the demise of the Bruins on Tuesday night against the Flyers. The B’s turned the puck over 16 times and managed the puck poorly in what resulted in a 5-2 loss to the Flyers.

The city of Boston had a trying week, and the Bruins did what they could to bring a smile to sports fans in the area.

The B’s got their first win in five games, and took part in the annual “Shirts Off Their Backs” tradition after the game. Typically, the players would take off their game jerseys and give them to select season ticketholders, but in light of the week’s events, those ticketholders requested that the jerseys be given to first responders and participants from this year’s Boston Marathon.

The Bruins dropped a 4-2 decision to a struggling Carolina Hurricanes team on Saturday, and head coach Claude Julien said the ‘Canes just “wanted it more.”

The B’s struggled on the penalty kill, and were not able to convert on opportunities in front of the net, prompting Julien to say the team needs to push themselves harder down the stretch. Saturday’s game should have been an easy one for the Bruins, but the loss showed there is room for improvement heading toward the playoffs.

The Bruins played their final back-to-back of the season Thursday against the Islanders, and the team looked more than happy to be done with that facet of its schedule upon the game’s conclusion.

The Bruins struggled on the offensive end over the past week, totaling just five goals in their last three games. Those scoring struggles were nonexistent Monday night.

Head coach Claude Julien shook up his forward lines against the Hurricanes, and the result was a season-high six-goal explosion. Center Gregory Campbell, who normally plays on the team’s fourth line, was moved up to the second in Patrice Bergeron‘s absence, and Campbell responded with a pair of assists and plus-2 rating in Boston’s 6-2 win.

Campbell’s new linemates were on top of their games, as well, as Brad Marchand scored twice and Jaromir Jagr added a pair of helpers.

The Bruins couldn’t capitalize on their final power play, even when they pulled Tuukka Rask, in Saturday night’s 2-1 loss to Montreal.

In a game with very clear playoff implications, the B’s passed the puck around and failed to get shot off as the seconds ticked down. After acquiring forward Jaromir Jagr and defenseman Wade Redden just prior to the NHL trade deadline, the Bruins didn’t have much time to get used to their new teammates before squaring off with the Habs.

An injury to center Patrice Bergeron forced Bruins coach Claude Julien to shake up his highly productive second line Thursday night. Luckily for the B’s, that unit was able to retain its explosiveness even with the team’s best overall forward on the bench.

Tyler Seguin shifted back to his natural position to take Bergeron’s spot in the middle, and newcomer Jaromir Jagr stepped in on the wing and quickly made his presence felt. The future Hall of Famer showed no hesitation in flying toward the net, and it paid off in the form of his first goal as a Bruin — the only offense needed in a 1-0 win over New Jersey.

Tyler Seguin has been heating up the past several games, and he continued his success against Ottawa. Seguin has two goals and two assists over the past four games. His 12 shots Tuesday night resulted in a goal and helped revive a struggling Bruins offense.

With the uncertainty of linemate Patrice Bergeron, Seguin knows he will have to step up to fill Bergeron’s shoes if the alternate captain is forced to miss any time. Seguin added that Bergeron is probably the Bruins’ “best defensive forward,” and that it was going to be a group effort by the B’s to step up in the defensive zone.

Less than a week ago, Matt Bartkowski was thought to be headed for Calgary. The rookie defenseman was one of the Bruins prospects involved in the proposed trade for Flames star Jarome Iginla.

But Iginla opted to take his talents to Pittsburgh, so Bartkowski stayed put and on Sunday found his way onto the scoresheet for the first time. The 24-year-old assisted on David Krejci‘s goal with seven minutes remaining in what turned out to be a 2-0 win over Buffalo, snapping a two-game losing skid for the B’s and marking Bartkowski’s first NHL point.

First there was Toronto. Then there was Toronto again, followed by Montreal and now Philadelphia. For the fourth straight game, the Bruins allowed their opponent to score first, and for the third time in those four games they came away with a loss.

The Bruins skated to a 2-0 deficit before they woke up and Nathan Horton found the back of the net Saturday in Philadelphia, but it was not enough to avoid another defeat. This one, to the lowly Flyers, was hard to forgive.

Tuukka Rask made 23 saves in the Bruins’ shootout win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.

That defensive performance anchored the team’s rallying effort in which they came back from a 2-0 deficit to win. The B’s were finally able to show some much-needed aggressiveness in the matchup, reminding fans of the character of the team, which has struggled to capitalize on offensive opportunities as of late.

Rask told Naoko Funayama it’s been a “long time coming, coming back from a two or three goal deficit.”
