As other police officers came to support the Watertown Police Department during the manhunt Thursday night and Friday morning, a transit officer was wounded. Watertown Police Department Chief Ed Deveau now says that officer is on the road to recovery.

Deveau went on Dennis & Callahan on Monday morning and talked about how the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing manhunt, Dzhokar Tsarnaev, ran away from police and hid in a boat. He said police were optimistic that they would catch Tsarnaev after the initial firefight, but he got outside their perimeter, and he wasn’t discovered in his hiding place — a boat — until much later.

Deveau also talked about Richard Donahue, the transit officer who was wounded in the gunfight, and said he is “getting stronger every day.”

See all of what Deveau had to say in the video above.

They may be laughing about it now, but it was anything but a laughing matter late Thursday night and early Friday morning when the Boston Marathon bombing manhunt came to Watertown.

Watertown Police Chief Ed Deveau appeared on Dennis & Callahan on Monday morning to talk about the manhunt, detailing how his officers engaged the suspects in a gunfight before tackling one and chasing the other.

The first brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was tackled by officers after he ran out of ammunition, Deveau said. The second brother, Dzhokar Tsarnaev, then drove away in an SUV.

One Watertown officer put a squad car in gear during the gunfight and let it roll toward the suspects, a move that has gathered quite a bit of admiration.

“It was incredible thinking, and then I get down there a little bit later, and he’s telling the captain, ‘I hope the chief’s not mad at me, because the car’s cracked up,’” Deveau recounted. “And I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ They don’t teach you that at the academy, Sarge. That was brilliant.”

Hear what Deveau had to say in the video above.

Watertown Police Chief Ed Deveau said his officers had been supporting the Boston Police Department all week. He just never thought the fight would come to his town.

“I am so proud of the men and women of the Watertown Police Department,” he said Monday morning on Dennis & Callahan, calling the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombing suspects a “gutty” performance by his department.

Deveau said the Watertown Police had been supporting the efforts in Boston throughout the week, sending 12 officers to help.

“We never expected it to come to Watertown,” he said.

The situation quickly turned dangerous when the suspects were spotted in town, with a gunfight breaking out.

“Why Watertown isn’t planning funerals for one, two, three, four, five officers is incredible to me,” Deveau said.

Hear Deveau’s account of the night in the video above.

He has become the face of the first responders — the man in a cowboy hat jumping into the fray to provide assistance to the injured seconds after two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday.

That man is Carlos Arredondo, and his story is an amazing one of grief, recovery and hope. Arredondo was a guest on WEEI’s The Dennis and Callahan Show on Wednesday, and he described what was going his mind as he helped carry 27-year-old Jeff Bauman. Bauman lost both of his legs in the explosion, but the help of Arredondo and other medical personnel likely saved his life.

Check out a clip from Arredondo’s appearance in the video above, and click here to listen to the full interview.

Joel Hanrahan is no stranger to trade rumors, but it was still a bit of a surprise when the former Pittsburgh closer ended up in Boston this offseason. After all, the Red Sox already had two-time All-Star closer Andrew Bailey installed as their guy, despite some injury problems through 2012.

That obviously changed when the team dealt for Hanrahan, thus relegating Bailey to the set-up role and shaking up the Boston bullpen. However, as the new closer tells it, Bailey couldn’t have been a bigger help in welcoming his “replacement” (for lack of a better word) to the team.

Hanrahan appeared on Dennis and Callahan on Monday and spoke about his trade to the Sox and how he’s been getting acclimated so far. See more in the above video.

Jonny Gomes has been heralded as a breath of fresh air for the Boston Red Sox, as the outspoken outfielder has a reputation around baseball for being a “good clubhouse guy.”

Along with a couple of other key additions this season, Gomes is a new face that fans can be excited to see around Fenway Park — and Gomes is very aware of how lucky he is to be around the game of baseball himself.

Gomes spoke to Dennis and Callahan on Thursday morning about the life experiences that have shaped him and why he strives to live every day like it’s his last. See more from the Red Sox outfielder in the video above.

Pedroia spoke about the differences between John Farrell and Valentine on WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan on Wednesday morning. The second baseman said that Farrell is very open and he can always expect a direct answer from the new skipper.

Pedroia also spoke on his new teammates, clubhouse chemistry and where he feels comfortable in the batting order (spoiler alert: he thinks he deserves to bat cleanup).

For the last two seasons, the Red Sox have been a predicted playoff team. This year, most MLB analysts have Boston finishing in the AL East cellar. Surprisingly, Larry Lucchino prefers it that way.

“I kind of prefer being the underdog, being the scrappy, hard-charging team that people don’t expect much from,” Lucchino said on WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan. “I think that’s maybe a bit of a competitive advantage. If we fall into that category, so be it.”

Lucchino wouldn’t put a number of the amount of wins he expects from the team this year, but he said that health will have a lot to do with it. The past two seasons, the injury bug has hit the Red Sox hard.

Check out what Lucchino expects out of the Red Sox in 2013 in the video above.

After three straight seasons that ended without a playoff berth, the 2013 Red Sox have a chance to flip the script.

With new manager John Farrell at the helm, along with plenty of incoming free agents that should shake up the squad, the Sox have a chance to bounce back this season and “rewrite the story,” as Farrell puts it.

The skipper stopped by WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan on Wednesday morning to preview the upcoming season, and he preached a “positive frame of mind” for the team while declaring the Red Sox do indeed have the talent necessary to make a run at the AL East crown. Hear more from Farrell in the video above.

The Patriots entered Sunday’s AFC Championship game against the Ravens as the heavy favorites, but Baltimore’s stunning victory further proved that any team can win on any given Sunday in the NFL.

There are probably plenty of Patriots fans who still think New England is the better team despite the Ravens winning rather handily on Sunday. CBS NFL analyst Boomer Esiason tends to agree with those folks, but he also believes there’s an intangible component to Baltimore’s current playoff success.

“There’s something else going on here,” Esiason said Monday on WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan. “I still believe that the Patriots are a better team. But those words probably ring hollow to a lot of people this morning, simply because the Ravens, in the second half especially, really played a whale of a football game.”

The Ravens, of course, have thrived in the wake of Ray Lewis announcing that he’ll retire after the season. And, as Esiason points out, they’ve also rallied around wide receiver Torrey Smith, whose brother died in a motorcycle crash back in September.

Curt Schilling didn’t make it into the Hall of Fame in this round of voting, but the three-time World Series champion isn’t too down on himself.

Appearing on WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan a day after receiving just 38.8 percent of the votes, the pitcher admitted that even “being under consideration was surreal,” even if he didn’t make the cut this time. Never one to hold back, Schill also expressed regret that the players didn’t do more during baseball’s Steroid Era and also lamented the irony in how the actions of a few have had such a profound impact on so many.

See more of Schilling’s comments in the above video.

Andrew Ference wasted no time tweeting out the news that the NHL owners and NHLPA had come to terms on a deal Sunday morning. He, like hockey fans everywhere, can’t way to get back to work.

Ference dropped by WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan on Monday, and he discussed the lengthy labor negotiations that culminated in a deal that, according to the Bruins defenseman, was “all give” from the players’ side.

“Well, if you look at the CBAs, the only thing better is the pension. And you get your own room on the road at a little younger age. In terms of winning, that’s it,” Ference said. “In today’s world, everybody understood it’s concessionary bargaining. You look at the other sports leagues and what’s happened to them, you could say that there’s certain aspects that we did better in compared to those guys. But compared to the old world that we played under, it was all give. That was the only possible way to play hockey, to have hockey, in our view, to save the season, and I think save the sport to a certain degree. That was the only way it was getting done.”

For months, negotiations between the two sides were filled with optimism and pessimism, depending on who you talked to. But in the end, we’ll have hockey, which is really all that matters. One man who is responsible for saving the season is NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, who Ference had plenty of praise for on Monday.

“It was the smartest move we’ve ever done. Without a doubt,” Ference said of bringing in Fehr, who has a reputation as a shrewd negotiator. “Every player that went to the meetings and was involved, every staff member would say the same thing a thousand times over. Obviously I’m biased, because I helped get rid of the last guy. But I couldn’t imagine where we’d be if we didn’t make that change and we didn’t have Don Fehr. Make no bones about, it’s a tough, tough negotiating partner on the other side. To have the experience not only of Fehr but also of the people surrounding him — the economists, his brother, the other labor lawyers that have been in those rooms, whether it’s with sports unions or auto workers or hotel workers — just the experience of closing deals, of negotiating, was priceless.”

Ference is now focused on getting the Bruins back to the postseason, something that would most certainly bring happiness to those Boston fans who have had to endure a rather depressing few months of no hockey.

The Patriots supposedly faced their toughest test of the season thus far on Monday night against the Houston Texans. They passed with flying colors. Unfortunately, things will get even tougher this week, when the Pats host the 49ers in a crucial Sunday night showdown.

NFL Network analyst Mike Lombardi dropped by WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan on Friday to discuss the upcoming tilt, which many might point to as a Super Bowl preview. Lombardi doesn’t expect Sunday’s game to go the same way that Monday’s game against the Texans did, mainly because of San Francisco’s defense.

Lombardi thinks this will be the toughest challenge of the regular season for the Patriots, as the 49ers are currently playing defense at a championship level. Check out Lombardi’s analysis in the video above.

The new Boston College head coach called in to WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan on Thursday, and he spoke glowingly of his new position, saying BC is where he wants to be. Addazio hopes to turn around a program that’s been somewhat in flux, and he points to the Eagles’ storied history as inspiration.

Addazio was asked during his radio appearance what three rules he’ll consider to be unbreakable at Boston College. He was also asked about what makes a good coach, and the new BC head man made it perfectly clear that you can’t fake leadership.

Hear what else Addazio had to say in the video above.

Julian Edelman really started to make an impact before the Patriots placed him on injured reserve with a broken foot. Now, New England is forced to figure out how to replace the wide receiver’s production.

Edelman had come on in recent weeks, showcasing his skills in both the return game and on offense. He had three total touchdowns in the last three weeks, including both a receiving touchdown and a punt return touchdown against the Jets on Thanksgiving.

With Edelman out, Brandon Lloyd will likely see even more snaps on offense. It’s up to him to make them count, as Lloyd has been up and down throughout his first season in New England.

One area in particular where Lloyd will need to improve is in the short passing game. Edelman had been stealing snaps from Lloyd because of his ability to do damage after the catch, and Lloyd will now need to show he’s willing to take a hit.

Check out the video above to hear more from The Boston Globe’s Greg Bedard on WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan.

In the wake of Javon Belcher‘s tragic murder-suicide, many have been revisiting previous conversations about football and the injuries that come with playing, as they wonder if the sport might have contributed to the linebacker’s mental state in his final moments.

Author, researcher and former WWE wrestler Chris Nowinski joined WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan on Tuesday morning to touch on that idea, shining a light on some of the research that has been coming out in connection with head trauma, aggression and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.

Check out what Nowinski had to say in the above video.

The Patriots are not known as a team that runs the ball particularly well, but they may look to do so on Sunday in order to take advantage of a mismatch against the Miami Dolphins.

The NFL Network’s Mike Lombardi joined The Dennis and Callahan Show on Friday to break down the Dolphins’ defense. While Miami appears to stop the run well, the Patriots could turn out to be a tough matchup if they play their cards correctly. Lombardi suggests that the Pats should use their hurry-up offense to keep the Dolphins on their toes and exploit certain opportunities when Tom Brady is running the show.

The Red Sox have a history of being big players in free agency. That trend could continue this offseason, as the Sox have plenty of money to spend after their midseason megadeal with the Dodgers.

Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino dropped by WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan on Thursday to discuss the interesting offseason. While the Sox have yet to make a big splash, they’ve been linked to a number of players, including some of the open market’s biggest fish.

Lucchino wasn’t ready to rule anyone or anything out when it comes to Boston’s spending plans prior to Opening Day. However, he did say that the Sox are trying to avoid signing players to long-term deals, as such contracts often hinder a ballclub’s financial flexibility. Lucchino said that the team is more concerned about the years on potential contracts than with the money that comes with signing a player.

The Red Sox, of course, inked Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford to lengthy deals two offseasons ago, and were fortunate enough to trade away both contracts. It appears Lucchino and Co. aren’t looking to make the same mistake twice, even though they will remain aggressive.

Wes Welker has had a successful run in a Patriots uniform, but it’s no guarantee that he’ll be back in New England next season.

In fact, The Boston Globe’s Greg Bedard thinks this will be Welker’s final campaign in a Pats uniform. The team placed the franchise tag on the wide receiver prior to the season, and the two sides might not be able to work out a new deal after this year.

If the Patriots do eventually part ways with Welker, it’ll leave a major void in the receiving corps, and will mean that Bill Belichick will have to look at other options to contribute out of the slot. Bedard thinks the Rams’ Danny Amendola and the Dolphins’ Davone Bess could be intriguing options to lessen the blow.

Mark Sanchez‘s Jets were embarrassed on national TV on Thanksgiving. The Patriots steamrolled them 49-19, showing once again who the AFC East powerhouse really is.

The most embarrassing part of the game, however, came when Sanchez ran into the gluteus maximus of one of his offensive linemen. The Jets quarterback fumbled the ball, which led to a touchdown for Patriots safety Steve Gregory. At that point, the game was all but over.

CBS NFL analyst Boomer Esiason joined Dennis and Callahan on Monday to discuss the Jets’ season-long woes, and Sanchez’s wild play was one of the topics brought up. Esiason was asked about his most embarrassing play as an NFL quarterback, and let’s just say, it wasn’t nearly as embarrassing as Sanchez’s mishap.
