The Red Sox have acquired infielder Mike Aviles from the Royals in exchange for infielder Yamaico Navarro and minor league pitcher Kendal Volz, the Royals announced Saturday via Twitter. Aviles, who played shortstop, second base and third base for Kansas City, will help shore up the Sox' infield depth.

Despite being a reliable bat for the Royals in recent years, Aviles has struggled in 2011. He has a .222 batting average, five homers, 31 RBIs, and .656 OPS, which is much lower than his career .734 OPS.

The Red Sox are "pushing hard" for outfielder Carlos Quentin and relief pitcher Matt Thornton of the Chicago White Sox, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported Saturday via Twitter. The White Sox would have to be "overwhelmed with prospects," Nightengale tweeted, to deal Quentin and Thornton while they are just three games back in the AL Central standings. Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal confirmed the report, but also said that Quentin is a more likely candidate for an offseason trade than a deadline deal.

Quentin is having another productive year as Chicago's right fielder, with 20 home runs and 62 RBIs to go with a .261 batting average and an .860 OPS.

Thornton, despite a solid 3.28 ERA, is having a bit of a down year for the White Sox after pitching like one of the best relievers in baseball in recent years. He is 0-4 in 2011 with 35 2/3 innings pitched and has only three saves in seven opportunities. He also owns an unimpressive 1.60 WHIP.

Both Quentin and Thornton would be welcome additions to the Red Sox. Quentin would make Boston's already major league-best offense even better, and would give the Sox a stable right fielder and the right-handed power bat they covet. Thornton would provide the Red Sox with a solid lefty option out of the bullpen, which they currently lack.

Offensive Lineman Logan Mankins also signed his franchise tender for the 2011-12 season and defensive back Kyle Arrington re-signed. Arrington was a restricted free agent.

New England also announced the signing of defensive lineman Steve Williams. But don't get too excited, Patriots fans. This is not the same Steve Williams who was once Tiger Woods' caddie and wing man. That Steve Williams is still looking for a job.

You can go ahead and add another name to the list of NBA players considering playing overseas amid the lockout — and it's a big name.

Reuters reports that representatives of Kobe Bryant will meet with officials of the Turkish basketball club Besiktas on Saturday. Besiktas has already reeled in Nets All-Star point guard Deron Williams, and it looks like the Lakers superstar could very well join him in Turkey.

Besiktas head of basketball operations Seref Yalcin confirmed the clubs interest in Bryant to Turkish reporters, saying Besiktas is hoping to land him soon.

"At the moment there's a 50 percent chance that Kobe may come to Turkey," Yalcin said. "Everything will be clearer after the meeting on the [July] 30th.

"Kobe wants some time to think about it," Yalcin added. "We believe that his response is going to be positive. Money will not be a problem."

Bryant has previously acknowledged his interest in playing in Turkey or China if the lockout delays the start of the 2011-12 NBA season. If he does decide to play for Besiktas, there's a pretty good chance that Turkish interest in basketball will skyrocket, no matter how many games he does play for them.

No, he hasn't announced when the first party at his gigantic Jupiter Island bachelor pad will be. This news is actually golf-related, and if you're a Tiger Woods fan, it's going to excite you.

Woods announced on his Twitter account Thursday that he will play in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational next week at Firestone. This will be the first time Woods will play competitive golf since May 12, when he withdrew from the Players' Championship after nine holes because of knee and achilles injuries. Woods had repeatedly said that he would not return to the PGA Tour until he was "100 percent" healthy.

Woods tweeted, "Feeling fit and ready to tee it up at Firestone next week. Excited to get back out there!"

The former No. 1 player in the world has had a lot of success at Firestone in his career, winning there seven times. However, he also finished 18-over par at a tournament at Firestone last year, which was the worst par-72 performance of his career.

Woods has yet to announce who will be his new caddie and wing man when he tees it up next week. He fired longtime caddie and friend Steve Williams last week.

Liverpool has been aggressive on the transfer market this summer, but one of their targets will not be making a move to Anfield after all.

TalkSport reports that St. Etienne midfielder Blaise Matuidi will be sent in a transfer deal to Paris Saint-Germain.

Matuidi had been a target of Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish, but PSG beat him to the punch. Paris Saint-Germain also acquired Jeremy Menez of Roma.

Losing out on Matuidi is the most recent blow in what has been an up-and-down offseason for the Reds — the club acquired Charlie Adam but missed out on Gael Clichy.

Beck was turned away by a security guard, and it wasn't just because players aren't allow to report until Tuesday. Instead, the guard sent Beck away because he didn't recognize him, The Washington Post reports.

Beck wasn't hurt emotionally after being shut down, though.

"I'm OK with that," he said. "I haven't done anything yet."

With Donovan McNabb a free agent, Beck is expected to compete with Rex Grossman for the starting quarterback job in Washington.

With the 2011 NFL season just hours into its session, some of the first reports of transactions are starting to leak out.

One of the first is the report that the Baltimore Ravens have informed running back Willis McGahee that he will be released once the calendar permits it, according to ESPN.com.

After gaining just 300 yards on 100 carries last year, McGahee has become expendable with Ray Rice breaking out.

The Ravens' fullback Le'Ron McLain is a free agent, but it appears the Ravens will look to re-sign him after the release of McGahee.

ESPN is also reporting that Baltimore will cut ties with two staples of the Ravens' offense, tight end Todd Heap and wide receiver Derrick Mason. Defensive tackle Kelly Gregg will also be cut.

Mason, who has played 15 seasons in the NFL, compiled 802 receiving yards and seven touchdowns last season. The 37-year-old has been with Baltimore since 2005, but was seen as expendable when the team acquired All-Pro receiver Anquan Boldin last season.

Heap caught for 599 yards and five touchdowns last season. The 11-year veteran had played for Baltimore his entire career.

According to Fox Sports' Jon Morosi via his Twitter page, the Sox are "keeping tabs" on Dodgers righty Hiroki Kuroda. Morosi did say in his tweet that the Sox' attention to Kuroda is "nothing serious."Although there aren't many concerns with the Sox rotation at the moment with Josh Beckett pitching like a Cy Young candidate, John Lackey stringing together a few straight impressive starts, and Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz soon returning from their respective injuries, Kuroda could only help.

Kuroda is sure to be a hot commodity as the MLB trade deadline nears due to the great season he's having and the lack of good starting pitchers on the trade market. Despite a 6-12 record (largely due to a lack of run support), Kuroda has a 3.19 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP on the season. One potential roadblock to a deal for the righty is that he has a full no-trade clause.

Morosi and Ken Rosenthal also reported yesterday that the Tigers, Indians, and Rangers are all also interested in Kuroda.

Ohio State University can breathe a slight sigh of relief after some very hard times.

ESPN.com reports that the university will not face the most severe sanctions in its recent tattoos-and-cash-for-memorabilia scandals. The scandals caused coach Jim Tressel to resign and star quarterback Terrelle Pryor to leave the school.

NCAA investigators said in a letter sent to the school Thursday that they found no evidence that Ohio State had issues with managing its football program, and they found no traces of new violations either.

"Considering the institution's rules education and monitoring efforts, the enforcement staff did not believe a failure to monitor charge was appropriate in this case," the NCAA investigators said in the letter.

Ohio State will meet with the NCAA's committee on infractions on Aug. 12. The surfacing of the letter could indicate that the NCAA will allow Ohio State's self-imposed penalties to be the only punishment the university receives for the scandals. OSU announced earlier in July that they would vacate its 2010 season, including its Sugar Bowl victory, and that it would self-impose a two-year probation and suspend six players — one of them being Pryor — for the first five games of the 2011-12 season.

Earlier this year, Ohio State players were accused of involvement with a Columbus tattoo parlor owner. Players reportedly received cash and tattoos in exchange for autographs, championship rings and equipment at the tattoo parlor. Tressel knew about the involvement for nine months and did not say anything to the NCAA about it. The school forced his resignation in May.

In other college football scandal news, the University of Tennessee self-imposed a two-year probation on its athletics department Saturday. Both ousted men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl and former football coach Lane Kiffin were accused of recruiting violations.

Tennessee detailed its self-imposed sanctions in a 191-page response to the NCAA's allegations.

"The University has taken what it believes are meaningful and appropriate steps to address the problems identified in this case," the response reads, "including declaring student-athletes ineligible, implementing enhancements to the compliance program, and self-imposing penalties upon the particular coaching staff members and sports programs that were designed to punish the head coach, deter similar conduct in the future, and offset any advantages that the programs may have gained."

Liverpool star forward Luis Suarez has been playing exceptionally well for his home country of Uruguay in the Copa America tournament, and Reds boss Kenny Dalglish isn't letting his play go unnoticed.

Suarez is currently tied for the lead in goals scored in the tournament, and Dalglish didn't hold back in singing his praises on Thursday.

"We're all absolutely delighted for Luis," Dalglish told LFC.tv. "He has done really well over there. He's taken his goals well and showed what a big threat he is.

"We're looking forward to him winning the final and then coming back to us. Hopefully he will be back with a winners' medal."

Liverpool coach Steve Clarke has made it clear that they will not rush Suarez in his return to the club following the Copa America.

Suarez's Uruguay team will play Paraguay in the Copa America final on Sunday.

The potentially soon-to-be-former Celtics assistant coach Lawrence Frank will be offered the head coaching position for the Pistons, sources told Yahoo Sports. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, a formal offer will be made in the next 24-36 hours.

If Frank accepts the offer, he will replace John Kuester, who was fired by Detroit on June 5. Other candidates for the position included Mike Woodson, Patrick Ewing and former Piston Bill Laimbeer.

Frank just finished his first season as an assistant coach in Boston under Doc Rivers. Many believed that Frank would be a candidate to be the next Celtics head coach if Rivers decided to walk away from the job, but Rivers signed a five-year extension this summer.

Prior to his time with the Celtics, Frank was the head coach for the Nets for over six seasons, amassing a 225-241 record and leading New Jersey to the playoffs four times. He was fired during the 2009-10 season after an 0-16 start.

Lucky for the Lakers, however, Odom was only shaken up mentally and not physically hurt in the crash, according to a publicist for Khloe Kardashian, Odom's wife.

United on Wednesday, New England was hoping to leave Foxboro on a good note. But the opposite happened Sunday night.

The Philadelphia Union handled the Revs with ease, winning 3-0 in the final home game of the month of July for the Revs.

It was not a pretty performance by New England, causing head coach Steve Nicol to say in the first half that his players were "playing like a bunch of school boys."

You would think that comments like that from Nicol would incite his team to score some goals, but it simply didn't happen. The Revs played better in the second half, but were still unable to get a goal on the scoreboard.

"We talked after the Salt Lake game that everyone needs to take a look at themselves and we really have to get on the same page," goalkeeper Matt Reis said after the loss. "It was very uninspired out there and we didn't show all of the stuff that we needed to do. All in all it was a terrible game."

Revolution defender Chris Tierney thinks the team needs to come together in order to right the ship.

"We're fighting for our lives at this point," Tierney said. "We've been getting on each other's cases a little bit and frustration is setting in. At the end of the day, we have to fight harder and work for each other, and we're doing the opposite right now."

The Revs were in trouble from the very beginning after a very flat start.

"We didn't come out with a distinct game plan, and we didn't come out and try to put the game in our hands," defender Kevin Alston said. "We let [the Union] dictate the game early on."

With team captain and goals leader Shalrie Joseph absent due to a suspension, the Revs suffered from communication issues throughout the game. While Joseph will be back with the team on Wednesday, the Revs will be missing Benny Feilhaber after he received a red card during Sunday's game. Not being able to get both Joseph and Feilhaber, two very important players for New England, on the field at the same time is a case of extremely bad luck.

Clearly, things are not going well for the Revs. The loss drops them to 3-9-7 this season, and they have not won a game since May.

You could feel the concern in the air in the locker room after Sunday's loss. Things will not get any easier in D.C. on Wednesday.

"You just try to put [the loss] behind you, it's tough," Tierney said about preparing for Wednesday's match against D.C. United. "Hopefully you let this feeling motivate you and you use it as fuel to really get stuck in on Wednesday."

The Revolution will remain in last place after the loss, and the fans have to hope that Tierney is right.

The Revs can either sink further into despair or let a terrible loss like this push them back toward their winning ways. Let's hope it's the latter because the Revs' spirits cannot get much lower at this point.

Sunday night's game against the Philadelphia Union marks a return to MLS action for the New England Revolution. Just days after losing a friendly match against Manchester United, one of the best soccer clubs in the world, the Revs are ready to get back to their winning ways.

The season hasn't started out well for New England, as the Revs currently sport a 3-8-7 record after having successful seasons in recent years. But the team was able to draw some positives from their match against Man U on Wednesday night, despite falling 4-1.

With the help of goalkeeper Matt Reis, the Revs held Manchester United scoreless in the first half. Although Man U scored four goals in the final 45 minutes, that first half will give the Revolution defense and Reis a lot of confidence upon their return to MLS action.

And no matter the result of the match, just getting the chance to play against a powerhouse like Manchester United was a great experience for the Revs.

Sunday night's game will be the Revs' last match at home for awhile, as they embark on a tough three-game road trip this week.

"It's huge that we start winning at home," Revolution head coach Steve Nicol told RevolutionSoccer.net. "Obviously we want to win whenever we play, but winning at home should be the starting point. It's key for us to do that on Sunday."

The looming road trip makes Sunday's game all the more important for the Revs, but it won't be an easy match. Goals leader Shalrie Joseph will be out of the match because of yellow card accumulation.

"Any team in the league is going to miss Shalrie," Nicol said. "We're not kidding ourselves that we're just going to be normal. But it gives somebody a chance to step up and do well."

The Revolution are also facing quite the formidable opponent. The Union are currently in third place in the Eastern Conference with a 7-4-7 record. Their tough defense will certainly make life difficult for the Revs on Sunday night.

"They're a really good side defensively," said Chris Tierney. "They get numbers behind the ball, they're well organized and very disciplined, so it's going to be difficult to break them down. We're going to need a special play here or there to get us a goal."

Sure, it won't be easy. But if the Revolution want to climb back up in the Eastern Conference standings, a win Sunday night against Philadelphia will be a good place to start.

The Union wins 3-0 and the Revs will embark on their tough road trip on a rough note.

Stoppage time: With 26 seconds left, the Union just slammed the door shut.

A goal by Sheanon Williams puts the Union up 3-0. Fans are leaving Gillette.

Stoppage time: The Union just tried to run up the score with time running out, but Matt Reis made a nice save.

90th minute: As time wraps up, we will have three minutes of stoppage time. Looking like a loss for the Revs unless some magic happens.

85th minute: The Revs just missed a great opportunity. A header on a cross went over the net. Still 2-0 Union.

79th minute: Subs for both teams just occurred. For the Union, Stefani Miglioranzi will come in for Keon Daniel. For the Revs, Zack Schilawski is in for Kenny Mansally.

76th minute: The Union were very close to going up 3-0 just now. A great attempt by the recently subbed-in Michael Farfan was knocked out of bounds by the Revs.

73rd minute: I was just notified that the attendence tonight at the stadium is 13,414. Not quite 51,000, which was the attendence for the Revs-Man U game Wednesday, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the difference in numbers.

Michael Farfan just subbed in for Carlos Ruiz for the Union. Ruiz appeared to be hurting pretty badly after the Feilhaber hit.

71st minute: The Union just got their first yellow card, given to Keon Daniel.

64th minute: Things are getting testy here at Gillette Stadium.

Benny Feilhaber just knocked out Carlos Ruiz, and received his second yellow card and subsequent red card. He is now out of the game.

A few Union players weren't happy and had some words with Feilhaber. I'm not a world-class lip-reader, but it looks like Feilhaber had some R-rated words for the Union players as well. A brawl was close to erupting, but the action has resumed.

63rd minute: Matt Reis just made a great save. The Revs are looking good, they just need a strike to make this a ball game.

The Union just made their first sub as well, with Danny Mwanga coming in for Justin Mapp.

59th minute: Perhaps the Revs' best chance of the game just occurred. A nice cross by Zak Boggs was knocked out of bounds by a Union defender.

Philadelphia is still up 2-0, but the Revs are looking like a different team in the second half. In other words, they are no longer playing like "little school boys."

49th minute: The first card of the game has been doled out.

Benny Feilhaber just received a yellow card on a rough hit. The yellow card wasn't surprising on that, but Feilhaber wasn't happy about the call.

46th minute: We have two subs for the Revolution. Darius Barnes is in for Franco Coria, and Zack Boggs has come in for Sainey Nyassi.

Half, 2-0 Union: Here are some notable stats from the first half.

Carlos Ruiz and Carlos Valdez each had goals for Philadelphia. The Union had four shots, two of which were on goal. The Revs, on the other hand, recorded no shots in the first half.

New England had five first half fouls compared to four for Philadelphia, and the Revs also had two offsides calls, while the Union had none.

You don't need to be watching the game to see that it wasn't a great half for the Revs just by looking at those stats. I'm sure that Steve Nicol is giving them quite the half-time speech, and they'll come out gunning in the next 45 minutes. I'll have second half subs as soon as they are announced.

Half, 2-0 Union: 45 minutes are up, and there will be no stoppage time. A rough half for the Revs. I'll have first half stats soon, so stick around here on NESN.com.

44th minute: Kenny Mansally just attempted a bicycle kick. Let's just say it was a failed attempt, as he missed the ball and fell on his back. The Revs need a good moment before heading to the locker room.

42nd minute: A foul called on Benny Feilhaber, and he was none too pleased.

It has not been a good night for the Revs. It looks like they will head to the locker room in a 2-0 hole. I think Coach Nicol will called them much worse things than "school boys" at the half.

33rd minute: A questionable no-call by the refs just now.

Danny Califf pushed Rajka Lekic and knocked him to the ground, but no penalty was called. Still 2-0 Union.

31st minute: As predicted, the Union defense is not giving the Revs many chances in this game. The time of possession is easily favoring Philadelphia.

24th minute: So, Nicol's comments didn't light any fire.

The Union have scored again on a goal by Carlos Valdez. He was assisted by Sebastien Le Toux, who made an impressive header on the play, and Kyle Nakazawa.

21st minute: Head coach Steve Nicol isn't very happy to say the least. He just said his Revs team was playing "like a bunch of school boys."

Tell us how you really feel, Coach. We'll see if that will light a fire under the Revs soon.

20th minute: Close call for the Revs on a cross by Union midfielder Kyle Nakazawa. A.J. Soares made a nice play, blocking the ball out of bounds.

11th minute: Well, that didn't take long.

The Union have broken the ice on a goal by Carlos Ruiz. He was assisted by Keon Daniel and Justin Mapp. 1-0 Philadelphia.

8th minute: A great attempt by the Union on a header, but Reis makes a great save. We're still scoreless.

3rd minute: The first foul of the game has been called against the Union. Benny Feilhaber was the player fouled. The Union have controlled the ball for most of the game so far.

7:07 p.m.: The players are on the field and "The Star Spangled Banner" was just sung. You know what that means. We are just minutes from kickoff here at Gillette Stadium. Be sure to stick around.

6:55 p.m.: The clock on the huge Gillette score board tells me we are 13 minutes from kickoff. And lucky for you, I just received the game's starting lineups and subs. The starting lineup for the Revs:

GK Matt Reis
D Kevin Alston
D Franco Coria
D A.J. Soares
D Chris Tierney
M Sainey Nyassi
M Pat Phelan
M Benny Feilhaber
M Stephen McCarthy
M Kenny Mansally
F Rajko Lekic

And the Revs' subs:

GK Bobby Shuttleworth
D Darius Barnes
F/M Zak Boggs
M Ryan Guy
F Alan Koger
D Otto Loewy
F Zack Schilawaski

Union starting lineup:

GK Faryd Mondragon
D Sheanon Williams
D Danny Califf
D Carlos Valdes
D Gabriel Farfan
M Justin Mapp
M Brian Carroll
M Kyle Nakazawa
M Keon Daniel
F Sebastien Le Toux
F Carlos Ruiz

Union subs:

GK Zac MacMath
M Michael Farfan
F Jack McInerney
M Stefani Miglioranzi
F Danny Mwanga
M Amobi Okugo
M Roger Torres

5:26 p.m.: Japan just won the Women's World Cup on penalty kicks.

Definitely a tough loss for the U.S., but at least Japan has something to smile about after a rough year with the earthquakes. Good for them.

5:08 p.m.: Consider me the biggest jinx in the world. Just seconds after my last post, Japan scored to tie the game at 2. This should be an interesting finish.

5:06 p.m.: It's a great day for soccer. The U.S. Women's team is leading 2-1 over Japan in the World Cup Final, and we have a Revs game tonight at 7:00. Could you really ask for more?

There's a fantastic atmosphere here at Gillette Stadium. It's only 5:00, and there's already a huge crowd here with their attention turned to the TV screens for the World Cup Final.

I'll have the Revolution-Union game rosters and starting lineups closer to kickoff.

8 a.m.: There was plenty of fanfare surrounding Wednesday's Revolution-Manchester United match-up at Gillette Stadium. The Revs shut down Man U in the first half, but Federico Macheda sparked the Red Devils in the second half en route to a 4-1 victory.

While Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Union won't quite get the global coverage that the Manchester United match got, it is a more important game for the Revs. Steve Nicol's club has struggled in 2011. They are currently in last place in the Eastern Conference with a 3-8-7 record. On the other hand, the Union, led by coach Peter Nowak, are in third place in the Eastern Conference.

The Revs may be looking up in the standings at the moment, but it is still early in the season, and a win Sunday would help get the club back on track.

I will be live-blogging the game at Gillette, so check back later for the game's rosters and starting lineups.

It didn't seem to affect Darren Clarke one bit.

The Northern Ireland native shot a 1-under 69 Saturday at Royal St. George's to put him on top of the leaderboard at 5-under overall. Clarke hit the ball magnificently but also missed a lot of birdie putts, which is why he's not running away with it.

Americans Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler both shot 2-under 68s on the day to put themselves right in the thick of it for the final round Sunday. Johnson stands at second place with a 4-under score overall while the 22-year-old Fowler is tied for third with first round co-leader Thomas Bjorn of Denmark at 2-under overall. Miguel Angel Jimenez from Spain and American Lucas Glover, the co-leader at the beginning of the day Saturday, both stand at 1-under overall.

U.S. golf fans are happy to see so many Americans near the top of the leaderboard. The U.S. is currently in a five-major drought since Phil Mickelson won the 2010 Masters.

Clarke will play in the final group with Johnson on Sunday.

You would think that a pro hockey player would be most well-known for his play on the ice. Not if you're Tim Horton.

The Toronto Maple Leafs great played in the NHL from 1949 to 1974. He won four Stanley Cup titles, and was known for his extreme toughness despite his relatively-small-by-hockey-standards size at 5-foot-10, 185 pounds. He also just happens to be in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Before his tragic death in a car accident in 1974, Horton co-founded the Tim Hortons restaurant chain. The Canadian chain, known mainly for its coffee and donuts, started out small and is now the largest restaurant chain in Canada. It has over 3,000 locations across the country and locations in other countries, including the United States. Tim Horton's co-founder Ron Joyce is now a multi-millionaire.

"He was a hockey player first and foremost, and a very good friend and teammate," former Maple Leaf Dave Keon told Sports Illustrated's Adrian Dater. "The business stuff was a distant second, but I know he cared about his shops. I know he and Ronnie (Joyce) worked hard at it, but I'm sure he'd have been a bit surprised at how big it became."

It's sad that when Tim Hortons goers are in the restaurant drinking their cups of joe, they probably don't know much about the man behind the chain's name.

Check out Dater's feature for more on the great Tim Horton.

Leiva didn’t hide his excitement for the win after the game, saying from his Twitter page: “Thanks for all the positive messages I have received.
Leiva is not the only Liverpool star playing in the Copa America in Argentina this month. Luis Suarez will lead his Uruguay team in Saturday night’s quarterfinal match against Argentina.
