It has been less than a week since Jose Iglesias began taking reps at third base in Pawtucket, but Red Sox manager John Farrell trusts the young infielder’s instincts enough to pencil him in at the position Friday night.

Iglesias impressed at shortstop during his six-game stint with the big league club back in April but has never seen action at the hot corner in the majors.

“Talking with [PawSox manager] Gary DiSarcina, it just felt like [Iglesias] took to the position naturally,” Farrell said before Friday’s game against Cleveland. “He’s a very instinctual player. He’s got very good reactions and reflexes, and that’ll be the case more at third base than being back in the middle of the infield where he’s got a little more time to get the pace and the speed of the ground ball.”

With a 5-2 loss to the Twins on Thursday, the Red Sox lost sole possession of first place in the American League East for the first time since Opening Day. It was Boston’s third straight defeat — all at home — and its sixth in the last seven games.

Organizations across New England and the nation, including all four Boston sports teams, have continued their efforts to aid the city in its recovery, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to benefit The One Fund Boston.

Clay Buchholz didn't have the first half that he wanted, but he's made up for it with a stellar second half.

Although Buchholz won eight games before the All-Star break, he had a 5.53 ERA. Since that point, he's won just three games in 13 starts, but his ERA has been rock-solid at 2.93.

So what's been the difference for Boston's right-hander? Buchholz says that it's been his comfort on the mound.

Bobby Valentine hasn’t exactly led the Red Sox to a wealth of success during his first season at the helm of the club. And due to the Sox floundering season in 2012, the manager has taken a lot of criticism.

The Sox dismal record has been a result of many contributing factors, yet Valentine continues to take on the majority of the blame for the poor output. Well, he fired back against the criticism on Friday night while speaking with NESN’s Tom Caron, even suggesting the critiques have been “personal.”

Pedro Ciriaco was a big name around Red Sox camp during spring training, but the talented infielder didn't even see his first major league action until early July.

Since the call-up, though, Ciriaco has been nothing short of spectacular. The 26-year-old was batting .344 heading into Boston's showdown with the Royals on Friday night, and he's been a versatile fielder, playing four different positions during his stint with the big club.

Even though Curt Schilling has been in the news for some lousy reasons as of late, it doesn't diminish the appreciation Red Sox Nation has for his achievements in a Boston uniform.

In four years with the team, after all, Schill was 53-29 with a 3.95 ERA and 574 strikeouts, garnering an All-Star appearance and second-place finish in the Cy Young voting along the way.

More than that, however, Red Sox fans remember him for his contributions in October — most notably the "Bloody Sock" game in Game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series in New York. And it's on the strength of all those contributions that Schilling was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame on Friday.

Adrian Gonzalez's recent experiment in the outfield has been a hot topic among baseball circles. The Gold Glove first baseman has put on quite the show in right field over the past few games, and he has looked like a natural out there.

As the Red Sox return to Fenway Park, though, things could become a bit dicier in right field. The dimensions at Fenway add a more difficult element to playing the outfield, and Gonzalez could find himself overmatched.

Manager Bobby Valentine isn't concerned with the difficulties of the outfield and says he has 100 percent confidence in Gonzalez's abilities.

Josh Beckett's outing Thursday night was anything but satisfying.

The Red Sox starter struggled through 2 1/3 innings of work before being pulled in Boston's 8-3 loss. Beckett has stirred up some controversy over the past week or so, primarily surrounding his recent golf outing.

Clemens had a lot to say on the WEEI broadcast, even claiming that his lawyer will be angry that he's revealing too much. He cleared the air as best as he could, stating that he's ready to have his day in court to defend the charges against him.

The former Red Sox, Yankees, Blue Jays and Astros ace has been charged on six different counts, all of them revolving around the fact that he apparently lied to Congress about taking steroids and HGH. Before his day in court arrives, Clemens made a statement via his Twitter account to back up his claim that he indeed never took HGH or steroids during his 24-year MLB career.

Clemens also stands behind his usage of Twitter to make the announcement, and said he is "getting up to date on all this high-tech stuff" during the radio broadcast. The former pitcher believes it was the best way to broadcast the message to his fans and followers.

Pedroia was looking comfortable on the dirt at the Fens, wearing sneakers and casually fielding soft grounders. The second baseman has also been cleared for running, but there has been no timetable set for his return.

Updates from Mike Lowell, Jacoby Ellsbury and Jason Varitek also came in during Friday Night Fenway. Ellsbury is scheduled to play in Pawtucket this weekend, and will make two rehab starts with the PawSox in their series with Durham. Varitek will remove his protective boot on Saturday, while Lowell remains on the DL.

Lowell’s update came as a surprise to some, but Red Sox manager Terry Francona ensured that it was a business decision, not one determined by his current physical status.

“The trade deadline is [Saturday], so it just makes sense to give it a day or so,” Francona told reporters before Friday’s game.

Kevin Youkilis, how can you not love the guy?

He is not only a cornerstone in the Red Sox organization, but he also gives back to the Boston community.

On Friday morning, Youkilis was signing copies of his new CD compilation, Music Hits Home, for his charity ‘Hits for Kids’ at Newbury Comics in Faneuil Hall.

The benefit album features tracks by a variety of bands and solo artists including Dave Matthews Band, The Allman Brothers and Boston’s own Dropkick Murphys. The proceeds of the CD sales are split between Youk’s charity and local charity, Christopher’s Haven.

Fans began showing up to the event at 6:30 a.m. to catch a glimpse of Youkilis and to show support for his charity.

“This city is unbelievable and the philanthropic work in the Northeast is unmatched,” Youkilis told NESN’s Kathryn Tappen. “We’re very fortunate that it allows us to do well and have a charity that lasts and does great things for kids.”

Amalie Benjamin joined Tom Caron on Friday Night Fenway to discuss the status of reliever Manny Delcarmen and outfielder Jeremy Hermida, who both played for Double-A Portland on Thursday as part of their rehab stints.

Hermida is expected to get another two days in Portland before moving to Triple-A Pawtucket, while Delcarmen will be activated Saturday.

“They’re starting to get those guys back, and that’s step one, and the next step may be Buchholz,” Benjamin said. “This is a good sign for this team.”

The Red Sox also optioned pitcher Robert Manuel to Triple-A Pawtucket, despite his 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief against the Rangers on Thursday.

The Sox need a fresh arm in the bullpen for Friday’s game and Fernando Cabrera gets the call up to take Manuel’s place.

The 28-year-old Cabrera, who is making his first trip up to the majors this season, gave up five runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of work for the Red Sox last season. In his career, he is 8-7 with a 5.12 ERA in 131 games.

The entire Red Sox organization is suffering a catcher drought.

Not only are the Boston Red Sox missing their usual behind-the-plate duo in Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek, but their Triple-A and Single-A affiliates, Pawtucket and Lowell, are also missing catchers due to injury.
