Baltimore County police spokeswoman Cpl. Cathleen Batton said Monday that the burglary happened between 8:30 p.m. Friday and 12:50 a.m. Saturday at the home in Reisterstown.

Batton says Rice was out of town for the weekend, but a friend was staying at the home and reported the burglary to police.

Batton says the burglar apparently forced his way in through a rear window and ransacked portions of the home. Batton says surveillance video shows the burglar.

The Windy City was unkind to the Red Sox on Monday, as they came up just short in their comeback bid against the White Sox. Will Middlebrooks had a chance to tie the game up, but his home run bid died on the warning track, and any hope of Boston winning did as well.

Still, Jon Lester and the (Red) Sox were time and time again just one pitch or one batter away from getting out of trouble all night. Somehow, the White Sox were able to come away with timely hits in each of those key situations, Adam Dunn’s three-run home run in the first inning standing out among them.

For that, we’re awarding him our “Last-Second City” player of the game award. Who gets yours?

Shane Victorino missed a couple of games recently with a back issue. Red Sox fans are now feeling lucky that he didn’t experience a setback on Monday night.

The Red Sox outfielder left the game against the White Sox in the sixth inning with what the team is calling left hamstring tightness. In the top of the inning, he squibbed a grounder to third and beat out the throw for an infield hit. There was nothing noticeable about the play, and Victorino even took the field the following half-inning.

It was only then that Red Sox manager John Farrell went out to check on his player with the team’s trainer, at which point Victorino walked back to the dugout and exited the game.

Jonny Gomes entered the game to replace Victorino, with Daniel Nava moving from left field to right field.

Dustin Pedroia‘s bat has been hot as of late and the second baseman is on an 11-game hitting streak entering Monday night’s matchup against the Chicago White Sox. Pedroia is 21-45 (.467), and his hit on Sunday was a bit of a gift from Minnesota Twins left fielder Josh Willingham.

Pedroia hit what looked like a routine double in the ninth with one out and one on, but the ball bounced off of Willingham’s glove before it rolled briefly on top of the outfield wall and landed on the other side for a two-run home run. The homer gave the Sox a nice cushion on their lead after a lengthy rain delay.

The Sox prevailed over the Twins 5-1, and for the role it played in securing the win, Pedroia’s home run is a Ketel One Honorable Moment.

The White Sox are doing their damage with two outs on Monday night, meaning that once again, timely hitting is not working to the Red Sox’ advantage.

After scuffling with runners in scoring position at times last week, the Red Sox now seem to have found difficulty in getting that final out of the inning. Jon Lester is then left in more trouble than he’d like, as his team faces a big hole early in Chicago.

The Pawtucket infielder has been taking grounders at third base and second base before games, according to the Providence Journal, to provide the big-league Red Sox some increased roster flexibility.

“They said I’m moving around, just to get an idea,” Iglesias said. “They haven’t told me anything else.”

With Stephen Drew holding down the fort at shortstop in the big leagues, the Red Sox sent Iglesias back down to the minors earlier this year to get some more seasoning. In the meantime, Pedro Ciriaco has been the backup infielder for the major league club. Should anything happen to Ciriaco, however, the Sox roster is a bit thin at second and third — a problem Iglesias could help solve.

“He’s a shortstop,” PawSox manager Gary DiSarcina said. “He’s going to be a major-league shortstop. But the goal is just to give him a tool — not just for himself, but for the organization.”

Iglesias, known more for his defensive wizardry than his offense, is batting .204 for Pawtucket this season with three home runs and 14 RBIs.

The AL Central-leading Tribe have won five straight, and Terry Francona‘s club completed a four-game sweep of the Mariners on Monday in dramatic fashion.

After taking a 5-5 tie into the bottom of the seventh, the teams combined to score eight runs over the final 3 1/2 innings, with Cleveland’s Mike Aviles coming home on an error to tie the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Seattle again took the lead on a Justin Smoak homer in the top of the 10th, but Indians catcher Yan Gomes responded with a three-run bomb in the bottom of the frame, allowing Cleveland to walk off with a win in what reliever Chris Perez called the “best game [he's] ever been a part of.”

It may be a highlight of Perez’s career, but even this finish can’t come close to the game these two teams played back in 2001, when the Indians rallied from a 12-run deficit over the final three innings to complete the greatest comeback in MLB history.

Check out a video of Gomes’ walk-off by clicking here.

Jose Mourinho‘s departure from Real Madrid has been world soccer’s biggest open secret since early December. On Monday, it became official.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez announced that Mourinho has agreed to leave the club after this season. Mourinho and Real Madrid will part ways by “mutual consent,” and neither party will pay any compensation to the other, according to the Guardian.

“We had a frank conversation, we analyzed a number of things, and we took the decision that after three years it was time to end the relationship,” Perez said. “It is never nice when you have to leave but we thought it was the right decision.

“The balance of Mourinho’s time here is positive. We have made a very important qualitative leap and we are back where this club should be. For six years we were knocked out at the last 16 of the Champions League and were not even seeds. We have now been semi-finalists three years in a row. Maybe for mere mortals that would be enough but not for a club like us. We are not satisfied because this club is so demanding but you have to look at where we came from. The word ‘failure’ is not appropriate.”

Mourinho took charge in 2010 after winning the UEFA Champions League with Inter Milan. His first two seasons were largely successful, as Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey in 2011 and La Liga (Spain’s first division) in record-breaking fashion in 2012. He signed a new contract (which was supposed to expire in 2016) last summer, but things soured in the Spanish capital shortly afterwards.

Fissures which formed between Mourinho, star players and senior club officials during those first two seasons became chasms in the third. He repeatedly clashed with Sergio Ramos, Iker Casillas and Mezut Ozil in the early days of the 2012-13 campaign, which was part of the reason Real Madrid sputtered at the start of the season.

Reports of unrest in the dressing room dominated the headlines from August through November. In early December, reports saying the relationship between Mourinho and Perez had completely broken down emerged in the Spanish press. They claimed that Mourinho would leave the club in June and were ultimately proved correct.

Real Madrid hopes to replace Mourinho with current PSG manager Carlo Ancelotti. Ancelotti wants the job, but he has one year remaining on his contract. PSG has denied his and Real Madrid’s requests for permission to speak. That could change if the two clubs reach a compensation agreement.

Meanwhile, Mourinho is widely expected to replace Rafa Benitez as Chelsea’s manager, but he could also take the PSG job if it opens up. The return of “The Special One” to Stamford Bridge will be one of the summer’s most anticipated moves. He will reportedly look to bring Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo back to England with him, but Real Madrid, Manchester United and PSG will do everything in their power to ensure that does not happen.

Now, the league might go after the team.

According to league spokesman Greg Aiello, the league has a rule in place that allows it to discipline teams when multiple players test positive for PEDs in a season. That option appears to be on the table out in the Pacific Northwest.

“There are financial consequences for a team that has multiple players suspended in a season under those policies,” Aiello said.

Seattle has had six players suspended for PED violations since 2010, most recently defensive lineman Bruce Irvin. Additionally, cornerback Richard Sherman had his suspension overturned on appeal last year.

According to NFL.com, a team would be fined a portion of the suspended players’ salaries based on a predetermined formula.

Rob Gronkowski‘s fourth surgery appears to have gone well. Here’s hoping it’s the last one.

According to multiple reports on Monday, the Patriots tight end underwent successful surgery to install a new plate in his left forearm and make sure that there was no infection there. If there had been any infection, the fear was that Gronk might require an additional, fifth surgery that would then make it doubtful that he’d be ready for the start of the upcoming season.

As it stands, Gronkowski is still dealing with some back pain that has required a closer look by some doctors. The team seems to be hopeful that he won’t need any surgery to fix what’s ailing him there, and that any possible rehab for that injury could be concurrent with the work he’ll be doing on his arm.

Gronkowski seems to have no shortage of bad luck when it comes to injuries these days, but it seems like for now, Patriots fans can at least exhale for a bit without needing to hold their collective breath.

In case you have blocked the 1996-97 season from memory, we would like you to know the Celtics were really bad. They won 15 games and finished with the worst record in the Eastern Conference by a wide margin. Only the Grizzlies, who won 14 games, were within five losses of that terrible Celtics squad.

Hopes were high, though, because the Celtics had the inside track for the first overall pick. (The Grizzlies, in just their second year of existence, were ineligible for the No. 1 pick due to expansion rules.) The prize of that draft class was Tim Duncan, a center out of Wake Forest who was widely considered a can’t-miss commodity. The Celtics had the best odds of landing the top pick and grabbing Duncan — so, of course, they ended up with pick No. 6 while the Spurs got the top choice.

Nevertheless, Josh Cohen at OrlandoMagic.com has imagined what Duncan, and several other top picks, might have looked like if the NBA draft lottery did not exist. If the worst team simply got the first pick and things moved on from there, Shaquille O’Neal would have started his career in Minnesota, LeBron James may have begun his career in Denver and Duncan would have been a Celtic.

Ignoring for a moment that Duncan could not have worn jersey No. 21, which is retired in honor of Bill Sharman, take a look at Cohen’s work in the photo below. Honestly, it doesn’t look that weird.

The Patriots are already one day into organized team activities, but they are still adding players to an almost full roster.

The Patriots signed wide receiver Mark Harrison, who — Gasp! — is a Rutgers graduate, and kicker David Ruffer from Notre Dame to fill out their 90-man roster.

Harrison, 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, is another terrific athlete with great measurables, including a 4.46 40-yard-dash time, 38.5-inch vertical and 129-inch broad jump at the NFL combine. He was inconsistent during his four years at Rutgers, but he did produce at a pretty good level his senior season with 44 catches for 583 yards and six touchdowns. He makes the fifth Rutgers rookie on the Patriots, joining teammates Logan Ryan, Duron Harmon, Steve Beauharnais and fellow undrafted rookie Brandon Jones.

Ruffer went undrafted from Notre Dame last season but didn’t link on with an NFL team. He won the Lou Groza Award, given to the nation’s best place kicker, as a junior in 2010 after hitting 18 of 19 field goals, but his senior season was a disappointment as he missed six of 16 kicks. For his career, Ruffer hit 83 percent of his field goal attempts. He is likely in camp to push incumbent kicker Stephen Gostkowski, who struggled at times in 2012.

John Farrell did some lineup tinkering during the Red Sox’ sweep of the Twins over the weekend, but it will be the usual starting nine that take the field when Boston opens a three-game set against the White Sox on Monday.

Stephen Drew makes his return to the starting lineup after an awkward slide into second base Friday night forced him to miss the final two games of the Minnesota series. The shortstop seems to have finally snapped out of the funk that followed him early on, and he has become a solid producer near the bottom of the order. Drew has hit safely in four of his last five games and totaled four extra-base hits over that span, including a grand slam last Wednesday in Tampa Bay.

While Drew returns to the bottom third of the order (batting eighth on Monday), Jacoby Ellsbury returns to the top after getting his first day off of the season in Sunday’s rain-soaked win over the Twins. Ellsbury has performed well on the basepaths — he’s tied for third in the majors with 13 steals this season — but he has struggled to get on base consistently from the leadoff slot. His .309 on-base percentage ranks second-to-last among Monday night’s starters for Boston.

Check out the full lineups for both teams below.

With 242 strikeouts in just 154 innings pitched, the left-hander is a dominant force, having yielded only five home runs during his career.

On Sunday, however, Chapman was less than his typical self, and it turns out his sweet tooth may be to blame.

According to CBS Philadelphia, Phillies Spanish-language broadcaster Rickie Ricardo (yes, that is his real name) brought Chapman two boxes of Cuban pastries. The treat is filled with cream cheese and guava, and Ricardo likens adulation of them — which he gets at an ethnic foods store near his home — to Krispy Kreme donuts here in America.

However, instead of going ahead with restraint, Chapman downed 18 of them right before the game. Later in the day, Chapman gave up back-to-back home runs Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis, giving the Phillies a 3-2 win over Cincinnati, and prompting Ricardo to make the connection.

“When I saw him on Sunday morning before the game, he was in the club house, he had just eaten about 18 of them,” said Ricardo. “He couldn’t breathe! I looked at my partner, I said, ‘He’s ripe for the taking today.’”

So, there you have it. Even Superman has his kryptonite, and Chapman’s appears to be pastries of his homeland.

As one corporate toucan would say, “Just follow your nose!”

According to DNA Info, Barclays Center in Brooklyn pumps its own “signature scent” into the air in an attempt to identify that smell with the arena and help build brand identity. This isn’t necessarily a new trend, even in the sports world.

The scent is the work of a company called ScentAir, which creates customized smells and provides the technology necessary to spread that scent in a large venue, like, say, a basketball arena. According to DNA Info, similar strategies have been implemented everywhere from the Hershey’s store in Times Square to Cowboys Stadium and Edward Jones Dome.

Many fans had noticed the scent wafting around the hallways at Barclays Center, voicing their interest or disapproval on social media. The Barclays’ scent has been described as having citrus hints, possibly akin to a high-end men’s cologne.

On Friday, Bruce Irvin was suspended four games for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. On Monday, news came out that backup quarterback Josh Portis was arrested on suspicion of a DUI on May 5 in Seattle.

Portis was pulled over on Cinco de Mayo for driving 80 mph in a 60 mph zone, according to The Seattle Times. Police said there was “a strong odor of intoxicants coming from the vehicle” and that Portis “had watery bloodshot eyes.”

Portis refused a breathalyzer test when he was pulled over but later registered blood alcohol concentration readings of .0922 and .078, according to police. The legal limit in Washington state is .080.

When Portis was pulled over, police said a passenger in the vehicle told the officer that Portis was a Seahawk.

“Portis asked me if I knew who he was and I stated yes,” the trooper wrote in the report. “[The passenger] exited the vehicle and began to cry. [The passenger] stated I was arresting a Seahawk, and I was going to ruin him. … [The passenger] shouted at me and stated she couldn’t believe that I was from Seattle, and was arresting a Seahawk.”

Portis faces arraignment next week. He is the cousin of retired running back Clinton Portis.

Gareth Bale is more important to Tottenham Hotspur than this photo suggests, and the Premier League club is ready to prove it.

The 2012-13 English Player of the Year is set to sign a new contract with Tottenham, which should keep him at White Hart Lane for at least one more season, the London Evening Standard reports.

“Standard Sport understands the Wales international, who scored his 31st goal of the season in the 1-0 win over Sunderland yesterday, has committed his future to the club with a £130,000-a-week deal and will remain at White Hart Lane next season,” the report says.

“An announcement is expected to be made by the club shortly, which will provide Tottenham fans with a huge lift after losing their bid to beat Arsenal to a place in the top four.”

Bale, 23, signed a new contract after the 2011-12 season, but this latest one rewards him for yet another fine campaign. He led Spurs to a fifth-place finish in the league and the quarterfinal of the UEFA League. His fine form, especially in the second half of the season, saw him sweep the player of the year awards and add polish to an already glistening reputation.

Tottenham operates under tight salary constraints, but it is prepared to break it in order to give Bale a raise. A host of top clubs are reportedly interested in signing him, with the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City and PSG in hot pursuit. Tottenham has no interest in selling the 23-year-old, as it hopes to build a team around him that is capable of challenging for domestic and European titles.

Tottenham has sold many of its star players in recent years, but it seems to be holding firm on Bale. Exactly how long it can keep him in North London remains to be seen. The report adds that Bale’s contract contains a clause which would allow him to leave in the summer of 2014 if an interested team offers over £50 million ($76.1 million) for him.

Next summer is a long way off, and Bale will be a transfer target this summer. His new contract protects his value and strengthens his ties with Tottenham. It also makes it more difficult for another team to tempt him to force a transfer for the sake of more money. He already got it from a place he loves and is loved in return.

Jerryd Bayless did not play particularly well in the Grizzlies’ Game 1 loss to the Spurs on Sunday. The fifth-year guard out of Arizona was run ragged by the Spurs’ screen-setting, directly contributing to several of the Spurs’ 14 3-pointers, a franchise playoff record.

Still, after playing in 92 games this season, including playoffs, Bayless should at least expect his coach to remember his name, right?

Apparently not. Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins was asked to talk about the play of his perimeter players after the game on Sunday, and while Hollins has little trouble recalling Mike Conley and Quincy Pondexter, he drew a blank when referring to ol’ What’s His Name.

Check out Hollins’ brain cramp in the video below.

Given Alabama’s college football success in recent years, what’s one broken BCS championship trophy?

Last year, the father of Crimson Tide long snapper Carson Tinker actually broke the Crimson Tide’s reward for its first place BCS ranking in 2011, knocking over the table on which the crystal football sat. The university ordered a replacement for $30,000, no hard feelings were harbored and everyone went on their merry way.

But whatever happened to the broken pieces of the original trophy?

On Sunday, the shattered trophy surfaced, put up for auction during the school’s annual celebrity golf tournament, according to longtime Alabama football beat writer Cecil Hurt. Moreover, it ended up fetching $105,000, a good $75,000 more than a new, intact trophy would run.

Check out an image of the broken trophy and auction setup below.

The Bruins have received plenty of good contributions from a trio of rookie defensemen in Games 1 and 2, but some veteran blue liners are starting to get healthy.

Dennis Seidenberg and Wade Redden both returned to practice Monday morning for the Bruins, and both players will travel with the team to New York for Game 3 against the Rangers on Tuesday. However, it’s uncertain whether or not either or both will be in the lineup for Game 3.

“ [Seidenberg]‘s getting closer,” Bruins coach Claude Julien told reporters after practice. “Whether it’s next game or not, we’ll see how he feels [Tuesday].

“As far as players in and out, it’s cut and dry with us. I need the OK from the medical staff, which is the doctors and the trainers. And after they’ve given me the okay, then it becomes my decision. There’s no gray area when it comes to that stuff.”

Where the grey area is, however, is what Julien would do if Seidenberg and/or Redden are healthy enough to return in Game 3. The B’s have gotten great contributions from Dougie Hamilton, Torey Krug and Matt Bartkowski in Games 1 and 2, two wins for Boston. Those three combined for two goals and four assists and were a combined plus-3 in the first two games of the series.

Unsurprisingly, Julien wasn’t willing to discuss any possible changes until he knows more about the health of Seidenberg and Redden.

“Well, the best thing to do is to cross that bridge when you get to it,” Julien said. “To procrastinate about it right now is a lot of wasted time where it could be putting it on different areas of our game. When that time comes, whether it’s [Tuesday] morning or whatever, I’ll be ready to make the decision. That’s what they want me to do as a coach, and that’s what I keep doing whether it’s right or wrong.”

Seidenberg, who had logged at least 21:32 of ice time in Games 1-6 of the first-round series against Toronto, played just 37 seconds in Game 7 before suffering an injury. He hasn’t played since then. Redden, meanwhile, hasn’t seen action since Game 5 of the Toronto series.
