Red Sox fans are happy to see that the Red Sox didn’t deal any frontline players to the Padres for Adrian Gonzalez, but there’s still the issue of the unnamed fourth player who will be sent packing.

If ESPN’s Buster Olney is correct, Red Sox Nation won’t have anything to worry about.

According to a Monday morning tweet by Olney, the fourth player is “considered to be a secondary prospect.”

With Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo and Reymond Fuentes — three of the team’s top prospects — already being dealt, the fourth player heading to San Diego is unlikely to be a big name. That will make the Adrian Gonzalez deal even sweeter for Boston.

According to ESPN.com, the Jets released a wine in September called Jets Uncorked, a 2008 cabernet sauvignon.

The team looked at eight wineries in Napa Valley before settling on winemaker Marco DiGiulio and marketing agency Wine By Design.

Eight thousand cases of the wine were made and can be purchased through the Jets website or at stores in the New York area.

The NFL allows teams to create a wine for special occasions, such as the opening of the Jets' New Meadowlands Stadium.

"We wanted a 100 percent cabernet, that seemed appropriate for football," Matt Higgins, the Jets executive vice president for business operations, said in September. "And we wanted it to be so good even a Pats fan would drink it after tearing off the label."

Of course, if the Patriots pull out a win, the wine still might come in handy for Jets fans.

Adrian Gonzalez is officially a member of the Boston Red Sox. General manager Theo Epstein made the announcement with principal owner John Henry at a Fenway Park news conference on Monday.

The first baseman arrives from San Diego in exchange for three of the Red Sox’ top prospects — Single-A outfielder Reymond Fuentes, Double-A pitcher Casey Kelly and Double-A first baseman Anthony Rizzo — and a player to be named later.

“I’m very excited to be here in Boston and ready to beat the Yankees,” Gonzalez said at the news conference.

Gonzalez hit .298, with 33 doubles, 31 home runs, 101 RBIs and 87 runs scored to go with 93 walks in 160 games in 2010. The lefty was named the Padres’ Most Valuable Player for the fourth time in 2010.

“I’ve had five incredible years in San Diego and grew up wanted to be a Padre, and my dream as a kid was to play in the major leagues and be a Padre,” Gonzalez said. “And my second dream was to be a Red Sox.”

Gonzalez has at least 30 home runs in each of the past four seasons and leads all MLB first basemen in games played (792), games started (779) and innings played (6,978) since 2006.

Although the Red Sox and Gonzalez could not come to terms on an extended contract, the team traded for him as a sign of good faith.

“We got close to a deal, but in the end when the window lapsed and we didn’t have a deal, we decided to go forward with the trade anyways as a demonstration of the good faith that developed,” Epstein said. “Had we not gotten to know Adrian and his wife and what they were all about over the course of the weekend, we wouldn’t have had that comfort.

“It’s just such a good fit. Adrian wants to be a Red Sox. We want him to be a Red Sox for a long time. We’re very confident that when the time is right, we’ll be able to work something out.”

With the addition of Gonzalez, the Red Sox’ 40-man roster now sits at 38 players.

FIFA officials who want to stay in London during the 2012 Olympics will have to pay for their rooms after all.

London mayor Boris Johnson had offered officials a free stay at the exclusive Dorchester Hotel when the city hosts the summer Olympics, but quickly rescinded the offer after the committee snubbed England for the 2018 World Cup, according to the BBC. The biggest event in soccer will be held in Russia that year.

England received just two out of the 22 votes last Thursday, losing out in the first round of voting. Russia won in the second round with 13 votes.

A government official told the BBC that England had been told that they'd receive at least five votes.

Mayor Johnson said after the results were announced that the committee’s decision was a "big blow and tremendously disappointing."

"We put together a cracking bid," Johnson added. "Our technical specification was top-notch and our stadiums would have been packed to the rafters."

But look on the bright side, London. At least you didn’t lose to Qatar.

New England native Bobby Butler made his season debut with the Ottawa Senators at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, a 3-1 Sens win over the New York Rangers.

The Marlborough, Mass., native played in two games for Ottawa last season but hadn’t seen action in the big league since an April 3 loss to the New York Islanders.

Butler was playing for Ottawa’s AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, where he scored 15 goals and added eight assists (23 points) in 25 games.

The winger was named the AHL Rookie of the Month for November, earning 15 points in 14 games, including four game-winning goals.

Before his professional career, Butler played with the Boston Jr. Bruins for three seasons while also playing at Marlborough High School. After high school, Butler joined the University of New Hampshire Wildcats, excelling as a co-captain and becoming a Hobey Baker Award finalist in the 2009-10 season.

Butler signed a two-year contract with Ottawa on March 29 and made his NHL debut a few days later helping the Senators clinch a playoff spot in a win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Heisman Trophy seems almost guaranteed to go to one of two players: Auburn’s Cam Newton or Oregon’s LaMichael James.

Most people expect an easy win by Newton, but James has a very good chance to win too. James’ chance, though, mostly comes from the possibility that Heisman voters wouldn’t want another Reggie Bush situation on their hands.

That’s not to say James doesn’t deserve the trophy. The running back has accumulated 1,682 rushing yards, 19 rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown in 10 games this season. In only his second season with the Ducks, James leads the NCAA in rushing yards.

But James is no Newton. If voters can get past the allegations of pay-for-play against Newton, then James should have no chance. Voters now have the NCAA’s blessing to vote for Newton, after the NCAA’s investigation found no evidence that the quarterback with the best passer rating had anything to do with any of the allegations against his father.

Newton has 28 touchdowns and 2,589 passing yards this season, and has led his team to a 13-0 record and the SEC Championship title.

It’s sad that it may end up being the actions by Newton’s father, Cecil, that costs the quarterback the trophy. If it’s true that Cecil wanted money from colleges in exchange for his son’s commitment, and that Cam had no involvement then it will be yet another example of an overzealous parent taking advantage of their child’s talent.

Luckily for Newton, the NCAA’s investigation ended early enough for voters to put the scandal behind them and give him the trophy he rightly deserves.

When Pete Carroll was hired as head coach of the USC Trojans, the university received more than a few complaints about their choice. By the end of his tenure, Carroll had brought the team two championships.

Lane Kiffin now holds the high-pressure position in Los Angeles, and the Trojans finished the season just 8-5 – their worst record since Carroll’s first year as coach.

But USC isn’t in contention for a bowl game this year, to the disappointment of USC players and fans everywhere. Does Kiffin have any chance at being as successful a coach as Carroll at USC?

Kiffin was instrumental to the team in his role as offensive coordinator under Carroll, but his time as head coach of the Raiders and Tennessee Volunteers casts doubt upon whether or not he’ll find more success at USC.

He did well in an assistant coach role, but his head coaching experience leaves a lot to be desired.

His one shot as a head coach of an NFL team ended with a 5-15 record, and his time in Tennessee left his team with seven wins and six losses.

After the Trojans defeated their UCLA rivals on Saturday, Kiffin discussed his team’s season.

“It helps. It’s still a disappointment,” Kiffin said. “If you look back, there were so many games that we should have won. So many games that we just handed away. We finish third in the conference and there is some good to that, but obviously that’s well below our standards.”

If a team wants Kiffin to be successful, they’ll need to be patient. He’s not quite ready to take on all the responsibilities that being a head coach entails. Give him time though, and he’ll be holding better records soon.

Kiffin is a young coach, and still has some learning to do before he’s at the level of a Pete Carroll, but with a few more seasons under his belt, Kiffin could someday be just as celebrated as Carroll in the college football world.

Does Lane Kiffin have a chance of being as successful as Pete Carroll? Leave your thoughts below.

Organizers of Australia's Sydney Telestra 500 supercar race built Hawk a V8 engine powered skateboard for his appearances at Sydney Olympic Park's skate complex on Dec. 4 and 5.

Running on 680 horsepower, the board has fairly simple controls: a throttle for speed and a cut-off switch to stop the engine. The rest will be up to the driver.

Hawk has expressed reservations about taking on the challenge, saying on his Twitter account that he's not sure if he'll be riding it.

Shaquille O’Neal‘s dance moves have caused a bit of a scandal in the NHL.

Buffalo Sabres forward Tim Connolly finally admitted that the eye injury he incurred on Nov. 21 was from trying to dance like Shaq, according to Yahoo’s Greg Wyshynski.

Rumors had swirled that teammate Derek Roy had sucker punched Connolly during a charity event for Ryan Miller’s Steadfast Foundation. ESPN’s Matthew Barnaby was the first to report the rumor, which was quickly denied by Roy and the team.

“I was backstage, preparing a dance move and I just fell. That was it. It was an accidental thing,” Connolly told the Buffalo News on Friday. “It wasn’t ‘Roysie’ punching me in the face. I don’t know where that came out. Those things can snowball. … I got a little work to do on [the dance move]. I saw Shaquille O’Neal doing it on TV. It needs a little work.”

The dancing debacle was just one of many injuries Connolly has dealt with over his 10 years in the NHL. The forward has healed from broken knees, concussions and foot and groin injuries during his time in the league.

The eye accident was just adding insult to injury though, as Connolly is still out with a groin injury that has sidelined him for the past two weeks.

To see the kind of dance moves that Connolly was trying to imitate, check out the video below.

Manchester United may drop out of the top of the Premier League standings this weekend thanks to Mother Nature.

United's Saturday match against Blackpool has been postponed due to frozen pitch at Blackpool's Bloomfield Road, according to the Guardian.

Referee Peter Walton inspected the field on Friday, determining that the field would not be ready to play on for Saturday.

"Mr. Walton expressed concern that the severely affected areas of the playing surface would not thaw sufficiently for the game to be completed," Blackpool said in a statement.

Blackpool tried to keep the game from being postponed by using pitch covers and hot-air blowers, but neither sufficiently thawed the field.

England is currently suffering through a bitter cold snap, with ice warnings being issued for many parts of the country and temperatures dipping below zero Celsius.

Man U stands at the top of the league, with 31 points, but a win this weekend by Arsenal or Chelsea, both of which have 29 points, would put either team ahead.

A rematch date has yet to be confirmed.

New York Giants safety Antrel Rolle isn't creating a lot of fans in New York these days.

On Thursday, Rolle compared fans booing the team to people booing soldiers who return home from Iraq.

"They want to make it that guys paid this much money for a ticket," Rolle said. "Yeah, I understand that, I understand completely. We risk ourselves out there on the field each and every day also. When soldiers come home from Iraq, you don't boo them. I look at it the same way. I take my job seriously."

Rolle's comments were insensitive, to say the least. Rolle later apologized, saying that he should not have used the soldier analogy and that his father, the chief of police in Homestead, Fla., would be disappointed.

It's just one of many stories of an athlete saying something he later comes to regret, and it's the second time that Rolle has been involved this season. In Week 2, Rolle complained about the organization's leadership after losing to Indianapolis.

Everyone has said something dumb before. The only thing that makes Rolle dumber than others is that he apparently doesn't realize how large of an audience he actually has.

As sports reporting branches out to social media, it's becoming easier and easier for an athlete to get caught with his foot in his mouth.

In September, Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Dan Ellis posted what he thought was an innocent tweet about the 24-percent pay cut that NHL players accepted after the 2004-2005 lockout. In a time when millions are unemployed, a goalie who makes $3 million per year complaining about money seemed ridiculous to many fans, and the berating he got from it forced him to leave the social media site.

"It's unfortunate, because Twitter is a way to show a personal side, show something that isn't in the regular newspaper. It's everyday life," Ellis said at the time. "Unfortunately, something like this can really ruin something like that."

It is unfortunate, because it's nice to see an unfiltered view of an athlete's life. It's boring to hear the same, managed message coming from athletes time and time again. But Rolle, Ellis and others need to learn that those video cameras aren't filming home videos and social media sites aren't private journals. They still have to think before speaking.

How can athletes walk the line between sharing too much and over-managing their message? Share your thoughts below.

With the New Jersey Nets still wallowing near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, the team is reaching out to a new fan base on the other side of the world.

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov announced the launch of the team’s new Russian website, which he hopes attracts new fans from his home country, as well as the New York area’s large Russian community.

"I'm glad we're reaching out to our global fan base in a personalized way," Prokhorov’s statement said, according to the New York Post. "We want Russian speakers from New Jersey to New York to Moscow to see the Nets as their home team, and a Russian-language website is an excellent way to further that goal."

Brooklyn, where the Nets are moving in 2012, holds a majority of New York’s Russian-speaking residents. Census results list the New York City Russian-speaking population at about 250,000, but community leaders say it’s closer to half a million, according to the Post.

"We're excited that Russian-speaking fans will now have the chance to get closer to Nets basketball in a comprehensive way," Nets CEO Brett Yormark said. "While we strive to become Russia's NBA home team, we are also gaining a large Russian fan base in the metropolitan area, which can now fully experience the Nets."

If the Nets continue to flounder in the standings, they’ll need all the support they can get.

New York Islanders broadcaster Howie Rose let his feelings be known on Sunday as the Islanders were handed their 13th consecutive loss.

During the broadcast, Rose, who has also been the Mets’ play-by-play announcer for 15 years, was caught saying that he wished it were spring training.

“Let me know how this game turns out. I don’t particularly care,” Rose said.

Rose later apologized on-air, saying that the comments were focused on technical difficulties that the crew was having.

“If you’ve been watching the Islanders lately, you know we’ve all been in a frustrated mood,” Rose said.

As the announcer for the Mets, you’d think Rose would be used to losing streaks.

Check out Rose’s comments and his apology in the videos below.

If you’re hoping to get tickets to a future Manny Pacquiao fight, you won’t have too many more opportunities.

Pacquaio told The Associated Press on Monday that he can’t see himself boxing after he turns 35, and that he’ll retire in three years.

Although fans would like to see Pacquiao take on Floyd Mayweather Jr., the Filipino congressman is already looking at other possible opponents for his next match, since Mayweather’s legal woes may keep him from ever committing to a fight.

Pacquiao said he would be willing to schedule another rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez, but that it wouldn’t be interesting to him or boxing fans.

“Marquez … perhaps nobody would care to watch it,” Pacquiao told Filipino news channel ABS-CBN.

Pacman said he would only fight Marquez again if Marquez’s team was the sole promoter.

“They have to promote it and they just have to give us a guaranteed purse because if the promotion doesn’t make money [in the pay-per-view], they’re the ones losing money,” Pacquiao continued.

Pacquiao and promoter Bob Arum both seem to favor a match against Shane Mosley, who loss to Mayweather in May.

“Mosley is OK, he is good and he is also a [former] champion,” Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao will discuss his future with Arum when they meet next month for the boxer’s birthday.

After losing to Manchester United on Saturday, Wigan defender Steven Caldwell had a few choice words for referee Martin Atkinson.

Caldwell was angry about the red cards that teammates Antolin Alcaraz and Hugo Rodallega received, along with a non-call against Man U, according to the Wigan Evening Post.

"[I] thought it was a stonewall penalty and I'm certain that if it had been a Manchester United player it would have been a penalty," Caldwell told the Evening Post of the non-call. "I said that to the referee at halftime, and he said he felt that Charlie [N'Zogbia] went down far too easily."

The defender said he thought the crowd reaction influenced Atkinson’s penalty calls.

"I just felt the referee could have shown a bit of leniency," Caldwell continued. "Maybe the pressure from the crowd and whatever meant he sent him off."

Manchester United went on to win 2-0. The second goal was scored against a short-handed Wigan squad with only nine men.

CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada Hot Stove got heated on Saturday when Mike Milbury joined host Ron MacLean, Calgary Sun writer Eric Francis and ESPN.com reporter Pierre LeBrun to talk about whether Colin Campbell’s leaked e-mail scandal is serious.

Francis said that he didn’t think Campbell did anything wrong, but MacLean disagreed.

“No matter how you slice it, it’s a conflict of interest,” MacLean said.

MacLean was disturbed that Campbell was discussing calls in games that his son, Bruins forward Gregory Campbell, played in.

The league’s disciplinarian sent several e-mails to former director of officiating Stephen Walkom about referees who gave his son a penalty that ended with the other team scoring a tying goal.

“What referee reading those e-mails or this story this week wouldn’t think, ‘The next time I have the Boston Bruins, if Colin Campbell has the ear of [director of officiating] Terry Gregson and I make a bad call in that game it’s going to jeopardize my chances’?” MacLean questioned.

The exchange begins at 3:25 in the video below.

Mike Milbury wants Colin Campbell to apologize.

In a blog on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s website, Milbury wrote that Campbell owes an apology to Marc Savard, the NHLPA, the fans and his son, Bruins forward Gregory Campbell.

Campbell sent several e-mails to former director of officiating Stephen Walkom about referees who gave his son a penalty that ended with the other team scoring a late tying goal. Campbell, who also called Marc Savard a “fake artist,” has repeatedly said that he did nothing wrong and was only being a curious father.

The NHL defended Campbell, but Milbury called the response from the NHL offices “public relations BS.”

“Enough with the ‘we did nothing wrong, we are men of integrity’ spiel,” wrote the former Bruins defenseman and coach. “A simple admission of making a mistake will do.”

Campbell said that he has learned a lesson about the privacy of e-mails, but doesn’t see any need to apologize for what happened.

Blake Griffin received plenty of accolades for his dunk against the Knicks on Saturday night, but he probably didn’t think that his opponents would be among those praising him.

“That was actually incredible,” Amare Stoudemire said after the game. “That was a play that definitely sparked the crowd and sparked us. We weren’t expecting that. I’ve had a few of those in my career, so I can understand the feeling he’s going through right now. I’ve been in those shoes before.”

The dunk, over the head of Timofey Mozgov, gave Griffin three of his 44 points, as he earned, and sunk, the accompanying foul shot.

Stoudemire nodded his approval during the game at the Staples Center.

And that wasn’t Griffin’s only big dunk of the contest. He had another one halfway through the fourth quarter, spinning around Danilo Gallinari.

The Clippers still lost 124-115.

Watch both dunks in the video below.
