Advocaat's men were lethal going forward, and there was little the Czechs could do in the face of the Russian advance.

Young star Dzagoev announced himself on the global stage with a suberb pair of goals. Arshavin was at his 2008-esque best, unbalancing the defense with his dribbling and passing ability.

If there was any doubt to its status as one of the Group A favorites, Russia put it to rest. It punished any mistakes the Czech Republic made in defense, and could have scored more than four goals

Russia faces co-host Poland in its next game. The co-host will not be able to rely on the services of star goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. He must serve a one-game ban after he was sent off in Poland's 1-1 draw with Greece.

That's all for now and thanks for joining us. Let's discuss the action from Day One on Twitter @NESNsoccer and Facebook. Be sure to keep an eye out for some news, fan reactions, analysis and opinion that is on the way on NESN.com.

4:24 p.m., 4-1 Russia: Substitute Pavlyuchenko has made quite an impact on this game. He danced around Czech defender Roman Hubnik, before beating Cech with a thunderbolt.

He has a goal and an assist in his first seven minutes of action. It looks like his January move from Tottenham to Lokomotiv Moscow did him a world of good.

4:22 p.m., 3-1 Russia: Alan Dzagoev has become a man on the international stage.

The 21-year-old scored again for Russia. He took a pass from& Roman Pavlyuchenko and thumped his shot past Cech from 18 yards out.

3:53 p.m., 2-1 Russia: The Czech Republic punishes Russia for its lackadaisical approach in the early minutes of the second half.

Vaclav Pilar ran onto a perfect through-ball from Jaroslav Plasil, beat the offside trap, rounded goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev and scored in the 52nd minute.

Can you say all that three times fast?

Halftime, 2-0 Russia: Russia is fully in control after the first 45 minutes.

Goals from Dzagoev and Shirokov gave the Russians a comfortable cushion, and the Czechs haven't been able to muster much of a response.

Czech Republic started out well, passing with ease through the Russia midfield. But it committed too many players forward at that fateful moment in the 15th minute.

Dzagoev started and ended the move which resulted in his goal. He showed off his skill set on the play, passing wide to set up the cross, having the intelligence to time his late run, and then finishing it off with a well-placed shot.

The Czechs were stunned, but pushed forward in search of the tying goal. An error in the midfield lead to the counter-attack that Russia used to score the game's second.

Dick Advocaat's men are in control. They are sitting deep and looking to catch the Czechs for the third goal. If that happens, the game is as good as finished. The Czechs must be smarter with the ball and draw the Russians out of their bunker.

3:10 p.m., 2-0 Russia: Russia doubles its lead in the first half.

Andrey Arshavin sent Roman Shirokov into the area with a well-weighted through ball from the left.

The 30-year-old midfielder reached the ball before the on-rushing Cech, and chipped it over the goalkeeper with his first touch.

Russia is looking lethal on the counter-attack.

3:00 p.m., 1-0 Russia: Russia takes the early lead in the 15th minute thanks to an assured strike by Alan Dzagoev.

Konstantin Zyryanov sent a cross from the right into the area. It found the head of unmarked forward Aleksandr Kerzhakov, whose well-placed header bounced off the far post into the path of Dzagoev.

The young CSKA Moscow star made the most of his chance. He hit it accurately past the goalkeeper Cech and through the legs of a pair of defenders.

We predicted that the Russians would be dangerous going forward, and they showed why.

2:50 p.m., 0-0: The Czechs are tipped to make an early exit from Euro 2012, but they're not playing like it in the Group A opener.

The young team has the early territorial advantage over the Russians, but there is a long way to go.

2:40 p.m.: The sounds of the national anthems of Russia and the Czech Republic are filling the Wroclaw Municipal Stadium.

We're all set for the Group A game between Russia and the Czech Republic.

Final, 1-1: Poland-Greece ends in a 1-1 draw. It's a massive disappointment for Poland, as it looked like it would storm to victory in the Group A opener.

The hosts were excellent in the first half, and Lewandowski gave them a deserved lead. Poland's failure to score a second goal in that dominant first half cost it dearly.

Greece made a couple of inspired substitutions that turned the game in its favor. Salpingidis scored the equalizer and won a penalty that could have given Greece the lead. But Karagounis could not beat the backup goalkeeper.

The result leaves Group A wide open. Russia and Czech Republic will play at 2:45, and there is everything to play for here in Poland.

1:50 p.m., 1-1: We've come to added time, and Poland and Greece are still locked at 1-1.

The Polish crowd is willing its heroes forward and whistling every time the Greeks get the ball. Signs are pointing to a draw, which would be good for Greece, but a disapointment for Poland.

1:30 p.m., 1-1: The dramatics are in full effect here in Warsaw.

Szczesny took down Salpingidis in the area in the 70th minute, gave away a penalty kick and got himself sent off. His backup for club and country, Lukasz Fabianski is injured so Przemyslaw Tyton had to face Georgios Karagounis.

Karagounis, the captain and one of the heroes of 2004, hit the penalty low and to the right, but Tyton got down and pushed it away.

Szczesny was celebrating on his way to the locker room, but he'll miss the next two games.

This opening game has been full of drama. Two red cards and a missed penalty bode well for the rest of the tournament.

1:10 p.m., 1-1: Greece has scored an improbable equaliser. Dimitrios Salpingidis came on as a substitute for the ineffective youngster Sotiris Ninis and scored (in the 51st minute) just five minutes into his shift.

A cross came from the right side of the Greek attack, and Poland goalkeeper Wojiech Szczesny left his line to intercept it. Neither a Greek attacker, nor Polish defender, nor Szczesny could reach it, and and the ball came to a stop at the six yard box.

Salpingidis arrived first and buried the shot.

Halftime, 1-0 Poland: Poland wanted a good start to Euro 2012 and got just that.

Lewandowski's goal gave Poland a well-deserved lead after 18 minutes.

Greece's defending has been shambolic from the opening whistle, and it will only get tougher.

One starting center back, Avraam Papadopoulos, limped off with injury. The other, Sokratis, was sent off after receiving two soft yellow cards.

It took Greece 30 minutes before it mounted any sort of sustained possession. It has to do a better job of putting Poland under pressure or it will be overrun in the second half.

12:45 p.m., 1-0 Poland: It's gone from bad to worse for the Greeks.

The central defender Sokratis has been sent off in the 44th minute.

He was already on a yellow card when he grabbed a Polish player, who slipped and fell as he was turning. It was a harsh call, and Greece is down to ten men.

12:17 p.m., 1-0 Poland: Robert Lewandowski scores the first goal of the tournament. It comes in the 18th minute of the game, and crowd's roar nearly blows the roof off the national stadium.

Poland had done much of its attacking down the right side. Perhaps it spotted a weakness on the left side fo the Greek defense.

Jakub Blaszczykowski got free on the right and drove an inch-perfect cross to the head of his teammate. Lewandowski was free in the area, and headed it past the goalkeeper. It was a goal scored in Poland but made in Dortmund, Germany. Both players feature for the reigning Bundesliga champion. Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp must be somewhere grinning that unshaven grin of his.

12:15 p.m., 0-0: As expected, fans of co-host Poland have packed the national stadium in Warsaw. They're loud, proud and all wearing red and white.

The expectations for the home team are sky-high, as there's no reason the Poles shouldn't advance out of a wide-open Group A.

The home team has controlled the early part of the game, but there's still 80 minutes left in the first game.

Liverpool has been held to its seventh home draw of the season by a resolute Stoke defense. On the flip side, LFC is still unbeaten at its historic ground this season.

The Reds dominated possession throughout the game, but created few genuine scoring chances.

Dalglish rotated the team and changed the formation. It might have cost LFC some of its cutting edge going forward.

Stoke never intended to attack the Reds at Anfield and simply defended for 90 minutes. Etherington had an opportunity in the first half, but that was the extent of the danger the visitors posed.

Liverpool remains in sixth place in the Premier League, but lost ground to fourth-place Chelsea. The Reds are five points out of that coveted fourth spot. Stoke keeps hold eight with a draw at Anfield.

That’s all for now and thanks for joining us. Let’s discuss this one on Twitter @NESNsoccer and Facebook. Be sure to keep an eye out for some news, fan reactions, analysis and opinion that is on the way on NESN.com.

91st minute, 0-0: LFC is applying all the pressure — just as it has done for the last 90 minutes — but Stoke’s now desperate defending has kept things scoreless.

86th minute, 0-0: Skrtel elevates and heads a corner down, but it bounces over the bar.

83rd minute, 0-0: Kuyt has another header that falls wide of the far post. He’s finding a bit more space in the final third as the game reaches its climax.

77th minute, 0-0: Kuyt’s free header from seven yards out goes agonizingly wide. Adam sent Enrique down the left with a well-weighted through pass. Enrique’s cross deflected off Woodgate into the path of the unmarked Kuyt.

74th minute, 0-0: LFC has two penalty appeals in quick succession. Woodgate tripped over Kuyt in the area. Carroll was brought down in the box by Shawcross seconds later. Howard Webb refuses the pleas of the crowd and allows play to continue.

73rd minute, 0-0: Bellamy comes on for Henderson.

72nd minute, 0-0: It’s more of the same for much of the second half so far. The Reds have dominated possession, but Stoke’s defense-first approach has frustrated the hosts.

62nd minute, 0-0: Palacios comes off and Whitehead replaces him in Stoke’s first change of the game.

The Honduran was throwing himself around in the midfield, but didn’t have much influence on the game.

58th minute, 0-0: Carroll is coming into the game, and Downing’s day is over.

55th minute, 0-0: Adam delivers a superb diagonal ball, but Enrique’s cross does not find a teammate. It shows that the Reds must get to the goal-line in order to stretch the Stoke defense. But midfielders need to make those late runs into the box to make the tactic an effective one.

51st minute, 0-0: Johnson fires a shot wide in LFC’s first attempt at goal in the second half. The England right back has gotten forward a number of times, but found too much resistance in Stoke’s defense.

48th minute, 0-0: LFC makes no changes at halftime. Stoke City has a corner kick and sends its trees forward. Reds clear the danger.

Halftime, 0-0: Dalglish’s new formation has minimized the danger that Stoke’s tall lineup can pose, but it has come at a cost.

When LFC goes forward, Stoke sits back in its two lines of defense, and comfortably clears the danger.

Kuyt, Downing and Gerrard have interchanged positions, but the space is so limited, there is not much they can do. Johnson and Enrique have provided adequate width, but their crosses are met by Stoke’s waiting defense.

41st minute, 0-0: As the game approaches halftime, the Reds are controlling the game. But they haven’t been able to cut open the Stoke defense in the final third.

35th minute, 0-0: LFC is having difficulty finding space between Stoke’s lines of defense. But the tough-tackling visitors have given away a number a number of free kicks in dangerous spots. The onus is on the Reds to convert them into genuine scoring opportunities.

32nd minute, 0-0: Downing goes on a surging run through the middle — similar to the one he took in the opening game against Sunderland, but his powerful shot sails over Sorensen’s goal.

29th minute, 0-0: Shawcross fouls Kuyt and is booked for it. It was a clumsy tackle.

24th minute, 0-0: Etherington catches LFC with numbers forward, runs from his own half and unleashes a shot on Reina. The Stoke winger has tucked into the middle to escape Johnson and found space.

21st minute, 0-0: Woodgate fouls Downing on the left side, and escapes a yellow card.

19th minute, 0-0: 20 minutes into this one, and the Reds have shown little in the way of attacking thrust. They’re solid at the back and Stoke hasn’t created anything of its own.

10th minute, 0-0: LFC has its first moment of danger. Gerrard delivers a corner kick to the far post, which finds Adam. But the midfielder can’t control it and it deflects wide.

Fifth minute, 0-0: Liverpool’s packed midfield is allowing it to maintain possession, but Stoke is solid in defense. LFC hasn’t been able to create a scoring chance against the disciplined visitors.

First minute, 0-0: Five nominal defenders have lined up for the Reds, so we’ll expect to see the home team switch between three and five at the back.

9:30 a.m.: Here are the lineups:

Liverpool

Pepe Reina (25), goalkeeper
Jose Enrique (3), left back
Jamie Carragher (23), center back
Sebastian Coates (16), center back
Martin Skrtel (37), center back
Glen Johnson (2), right back
Charlie Adam (26), midfielder
Jordan Henderson (14), midfielder
Stewart Downing (19), midfielder
Steve Gerrard (8), midfielder
Dirk Kuyt (18), forward

Substitutes

Doni (32), goalkeeper
Fabio Aurelio (6), defender
Martin Kelly (34), defender
Jon Flanagan (38), defender
Jonjo Shelvey (33), midfielder
Craig Bellamy (39), forward
Andy Carroll (9), striker

Stoke City

Thomas Sorensen (29), goalkeeper
Ryan Shawcross (17), right back
Jonathan Woodgate (39), center back
Robert Huth (4), center back
Marc Wilson (12), left back
Wilson Palacios (40), midfielder
Rory Delap (24), midfield
Matthew Etherington (26), midfield
Glenn Whelan (6), midfield
Peter Crouch (25), forward
Jonathan Walters (19), forward

Substitutes

Asmir Begovich (1), goalkeeper
Andy Wilkinson (28), defender
Dean Whitehead (18), midfield
Jermaine Pennant (16), midfield
Ricardo Fuller (10), forward
Cameron Jerome (33), forward
Kenwyne Jones (9), striker

12 a.m. ET: The atmosphere at Anfield is growing more positive by the day. Consecutive cup wins were followed by Steve Gerrard signing a new contract. A win over Stoke City Saturday will cap a fine week for the Reds, and the Anfield crowd will be expecting just that.

Liverpool emerged from a festive period in good shape. That is a triumph in itself, as the club dealt with a flurry of games and the loss of its star forward, Luis Suarez. The Reds showed great strength during a time of adversity, and that character display should propel them forward in the second half of the season.

Gerrard’s return to fitness in recent weeks has given the entire club a lift. It has also increased competition for places in starting 11, which can only help the team. LFC will field a strong starting 11, that could see some players who have featured in the cup games make way for the more familiar faces.

Eighth-place Stoke won the last league meeting between these two teams in September. The 1-0 win was a bitter blow for the Reds, as they outplayed their stubborn hosts for most of the contest. LFC’s 2-1 Carling Cup win in October helped soften the blow, but a victory on Saturday will consign the September loss to history.

The Potters performed well enough in December to keep their hopes for a place in next season’s European competitions alive. They will be well rested, as their last game was a 3-1 win at Gillingham last Saturday.

The 6-foot-7 lefty's offseason has been an interesting one. After being traded to the Sox for Dustin Richardson in November, he was granted free agency by the team and re-signed, all within about a month's time.

The hurler will likely begin the season in Pawtucket — as either a starter or reliever — to work on his form and build up his confidence after starting off his career on the wrong foot in both Detroit and Florida. The former sixth overall draft pick is just 25 years old, so he clearly has potential to be an effective major league pitcher.

There's a lot more to be known about the mysterious youngster, so feel free to ask. Miller will answer your questions live on Red Sox Live on Friday night.

A brand new episode of Red Sox Live From Fort Myers will be airing every weeknight and weekend morning for 13 straight days starting on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. ET. During every episode, NESN baseball analysts will answer questions from fans.
On Wednesday, the second baseman told NESN's Peter Gammons that he matured during his time away from the field in 2010.

"I learned a lot," Pedroia said. "I felt like I matured a lot more by watching the game and I figured out — even during my rehab process — that I can't go 1,000 miles an hour like I normally do. So I have to harness energy in certain areas and I think it's made me better player, and it's definitely made me a better person for it."

But what else is on Pedey's mind? Why don't you ask him for yourself?

Jed Lowrie, healthy and ready to prove himself in 2011, is currently penciled in as a backup shortstop and utility infielder. The switch-hitter is entering his fourth MLB season and likely itching for a starting job — a role he'll be pushing hard for this spring in Fort Myers.

The Sox also have a hot prospect in the farm system in Jose Iglesias. The smooth-fielding 21-year-old from Cuba has been wowing fans with his glove work since joining the franchise in 2009.

Who will be the Sox' starting shortstop come August? With what mindset is Lowrie entering the 2011 campaign? Ask him for yourself, as he'll be appearing on Red Sox Live, alongside Scott Atchison, on Wednesday night.

There's still palpable anticipation for games to begin, but the monotony of spring training itself hasn't set in.

The fundamentals are still being covered, but it's done with a watchful eye on the approaching slate of games that will mirror the regular season grind.

So, what do teams do in their final days of preparation before games start? What kind of adjustments are being made to help players ease themselves back into the swing of things as they prepare for another season?

Those are just a couple of questions that you could have answered on Wednesday's Red Sox Live. Leave your questions for Tom Caron, Don Orsillo and Peter Gammons below and tune in at 6 p.m. ET to see if they're answered.

As the days go by, more questions arise — particularly regarding the team's bullpen. Who better to ask about that part of the club than Dan Wheeler?

The Rhode Island native is joining the Sox' staff this season and he'll likely play a key role in turning around a bullpen that finished 12th in the AL in ERA last season.

Outfielder Mike Cameron will also be joining Wheeler and the NESN crew. The veteran is expecting big things this year in Boston and he even brought up the thought of the team reaching 100 wins this season.

You can also get in your questions to Tom Caron, Don Orsillo, Peter Gammons and Heidi Watney. Tune in Tuesday night at 6 p.m. to see if your question is answered.

The pair of baseball experts were also able to land pitcher John Lackey to come aboard, as the tall righty looks to make his second season in Boston a memorable one.

The new left fielder is bringing a wealth of talent to Boston this summer, but before he gets to Fenway Park, he’ll be fine-tuning his skills alongside his new teammates in Florida.

Find out the answers to these questions and more for yourself by tuning in to Red Sox Live on Friday night.
While much of Red Sox Nation eagerly anticipates temperatures that may reach the mid-40s this week, the Red Sox — at least pitchers and catchers — have finally reported to spring training.

It’s time to get the show on the road, and while New England can hardly wait for Opening Day on April 1, they’ll have to settle for now fielding drills, bullpen sessions, batting practice and eventually Grapefruit League games to tide them over.

The NESN team is in Fort Myers and ready to bring you wall-to-wall coverage of Red Sox spring training. And, they want to hear from you. Be sure to send in all of your burning questions for Monday’s edition of Red Sox Live this week as Tom Caron, Peter Gammons and Heidi Watney. Then check back in on Monday night to see if your question is answered.

Ace Jon Lester and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia join the gang on Monday night.

A brand new episode of Red Sox Live From Fort Myers will be airing every weeknight and weekend morning for 13 straight days starting on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. ET. During every episode, NESN baseball analysts will answer questions from fans.
The Tampa Bay Rays experienced a tough offseason in 2010, watching their successful roster get picked apart by an onslaught of free agent signings and trades.

However, the Rays finally pulled an interesting move of their own, signing two designated hitters/outfielders for the price of one on Friday. Tampa signed former Red Sox favorites Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez on Friday sending a buzz of skepticism and excitement running through baseball.

On one hand, Ramirez and Damon are inching toward the end of their respective careers, and might not bring a lot of productivity with them to Tampa. On the other, Joe Maddon might be just the right manager to drive up their efforts in 2011.

If anything, the deal definitely ignited a little excitement in Tampa after an offseason of letdowns.

To hear more about the reunion, check out the video above from Red Sox Hot Stove Live.

Tuesday’s edition of Red Sox Hot Stove Live will give fans the opportunity to ask two of the team’s younger players questions about the upcoming year in Red Sox Nation. Darnell McDonald and Ryan Kalish will be joining Don Orsillo, Nick Cafardo and Tom Caron at the NESN studios in Watertown to answer your questions about the season ahead.

The pieces have fallen into place for the Red Sox during the winter months, and it will be exciting to see just how well they come together in spring training come February. Kevin Youkilis recently announced that he’s ready and willing for his switch to third base, but how will the infield change impact the Red Sox?

You can’t go through the offseason without a few question marks, however, and the Red Sox are no different despite their stacked roster. How will Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford adjust to life in Fenway Park? Though it’s assumed both superstars will excel, the transition to Boston is always a bit of a shock to start out.

For both Red Sox and MLB questions, we turn to the Red Sox Hot Stove Live panelists. This week, Boston Globe columnist Nick Cafardo joins Don Orsillo and Tom Caron to discuss the latest updates in baseball.

Be sure to send your questions to the panelists, and tune in to see if your question is answered on air during the show’s Live BP segment.

Now that more pieces are falling into place, the Red Sox are getting a better scope of what the competition will look like in 2011, and it won't be an easy schedule. Adrian Beltre's recent signing with the Texas Rangers only further boosts their presence in the AL West, and the Yankees are on a fervent search for rotation and bullpen help to combat the Red Sox' lineup.

Speaking of the Red Sox' lineup, manager Terry Francona recently told NESN's Tom Caron that he wasn't going to construct a lineup until spring training, so what will Tito piece together in Fort Myers?

For Red Sox questions and more, we turn to the Red Sox Hot Stove Live experts. This week, former Red Sox manager Kevin Kennedy joins Peter Gammons, Don Orsillo and TC to answer your questions and to discuss the latest updates in Red Sox Nation and beyond.

Be sure to send your questions to the panelists, and tune in to see if your question is answered on air during the show's Live BP segment.
