Not only is Matt Kemp one of the best, most dynamic players in Major League Baseball, but it turns out he’s a pretty amazing human being, too.

During Sunday’s contest between the bitter California rival Dodgers and Giants, Los Angeles third base coach Tim Wallach noticed a young disabled Dodgers fan along the third base line among the sea of San Francisco supporters at AT&T Park. The details are a little scarce, but Wallach told Kemp about the fan, claims the below YouTube video.

What happened next is one of the best scenes you’ll ever see on a baseball field. After losing 4-3, Kemp came over to the fan, and not only gave him an autographed ball, but literally gave him the shirt off his back. Right there in foul territory, Kemp took off his cap, jersey and shoes, and handed them to the fan.

No word who the mystery Dodgers fan is (the YouTube video description claims only that he is the poster’s best friend, and is fighting a “brave battle”) or what his back story may be, but check out the video below to witness the amazing moment.

You may not know it if you were born after 1958, but the Dodgers and Yankees used to have one of the biggest rivalries in Major League Baseball.

The rivalry still stands, even if the teams rarely play each other anymore, so it’s perplexing why CC Sabathia would think it’s a good idea to wear a Dodgers hat to Game 7 of the Bulls-Nets playoff series — even if it is a Brooklyn Dodgers hat. It’s odd in general for a baseball player to wear the hat of an opposing major league team.

The Yankees and Dodgers have faced off in the World Series 11 times, the most of any pair of teams from the American and National Leagues.

Check out Sabathia’s fashion choice in the photo below.

Hanley Ramirez can only hope to replicate the production that David Ortiz has provided since returning from a stint on the disabled list. The Dodgers shortstop at least has Ortiz’s blessing, though.

Ortiz sent out a tweet on Thursday afternoon wishing his “boy” the best of luck. Ramirez already returned with a bang — going deep in his first game on Tuesday and going 3-for-4 on Wednesday — but a little extra support from Big Papi never hurt.

Ortiz and Ramirez, of course, were teammates in Boston briefly in 2005, when Ramirez was still an up-and-coming prospect. Ramirez was eventually dealt to the Marlins, and then later to the Dodgers, but it’s clear the two still keep in touch.

Check out Ortiz’s tweet below.

During Tuesday night’s game, the South Korean pop star made an appearance at Dodger Stadium to cheer on his fellow countryman, Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu. He also decided to bust out some dance moves, much to the joy of the Dodger faithful. Everyone seemed to enjoy his quirky moves except for arguably the most famous Dodger of them all, Tommy Lasorda.

Twitter has many uses, and comedian Rob Delaney appears to be attuned to them all.

The comedian, whose Twitter feed is entertaining to the point that he was recognized in the Time 100 and by Comedy Central, tweeted at the Dodgers last month with the hope that he could land the job of singing the national anthem at a Los Angeles game. The Dodgers, like any responsible Twitter users, replied back.

.@Dodgers May I sing nat’l anthem at a game? I’ve done it 3x in years past but my contact left. I’ve done @RedSox 4x. This is not a joke.
—
rob delaney (@robdelaney) March 25, 2013

.@robdelaney How's your falsetto?
—
Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) March 25, 2013

The exchange didn’t end on Twitter, though. Delaney got his chance to show off his pipes this weekend, and his singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” revealed that he knows how to use his vocal chords in multiple ways, too. Delaney, who reportedly majored in musical theater, delivered a pretty solid national anthem. (He did not, however, deliver any jokes mid-song, which he promised when interviewed on the field before the game.)

Check out Delaney’s song below, and then figure out whether he also used Twitter to book that University of Iowa gig.

Crawford doesn’t want to keep thinking about his time in Boston, so he keeps talking about his time in Boston.

Carl Crawford doesn’t want to keep thinking about his time in Boston, so as a solution, he keeps talking about his time in Boston. That makes a ton of sense.

Crawford once again opened his mouth, and again, the garbage that spewed out included a whole bunch of hostility toward his time with the Red Sox.

“I don’t think I smiled in two years,” Crawford told USA Today. “I was just frowning. I started growing gray hairs on my face from the stress and everything for two years straight.”

This is hardly the first time Crawford has been vocal about his less-than-stellar stint in Beantown, and if we were placing bets, the safe money is that he’ll probably bring it up again at some point. It begs the question: why do you continue to beat this lifeless horse, Carl?

Crawford underperformed in 2011 and then again in 2012 before being shipped to Los Angeles, so it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that he probably didn’t enjoy his time in Boston very much. He still feels the need to hammer his message home, though, and it’s gotten to a point where the 31-year-old is straddling obnoxiousness.

Responding to Crawford’s most recent comments hardly seems like a worthwhile endeavor. After all, not much about his stance has changed. He still seems to think he was unfairly criticized, and he still thinks that everyone was out to get him.

“I try not to even think about my days in Boston anymore,” Crawford reportedly said. “It’s still just such a nightmare. Every time I think about it, I cringe.”

Well, here’s a thought: Don’t think about it.

Crawford, to his credit, is putting together a nice season, but his Dodgers enter Thursday’s action sitting at 9-11 and in fourth place in the NL West. Surely, his new — and, evidently, much more welcoming — fans would prefer he direct his attention toward helping L.A. fulfill its lofty expectations.

That’s too easy, though. Moving on makes too much sense. The Red Sox have obviously moved on, and even the other players sent to the Dodgers as part of last August’s trade — Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto — seem to have moved on. Yet, Mr. Crawford continues to bring up just how heinous it was to make roughly $33.5 million in the supposed hellhole that is Boston.

Crawford’s most recent comments really strike a chord because not only are they unnecessary, but they’re also very poorly timed. If Crawford wants to continue to spout off about his time with the Red Sox, then obviously he’s well within his right. Last time I checked, this is America. Nothing he said is really new, though, and it just seems like now would have been an appropriate time to end his yearlong tirade about Boston.

The outfielder’s ongoing beef is obviously geared more toward his experience with his former organization than the city in which the team plays, but there are plenty of Sox hat-wearing Bostonians who would prefer to move forward without the background noise that is Carl Crawford.

Newsflash: Carl Crawford didn’t enjoy his time in Boston.

Crawford, who was traded to the Dodgers last August, has made it perfectly clear on multiple occasions that he wasn’t happy while playing for the Red Sox. Crawford recently spoke to USA Today, and he again hammered home just how miserable he was during his season and a half in Boston.

“I don’t think I smiled in two years,” Crawford said. “I was just frowning. I started growing gray hairs on my face from the stress and everything for two years straight.”

Crawford hit just .255 with 11 home runs, 56 RBIs and a .289 on-base percentage in 130 games in 2011 after inking a seven-year, $142 million contract with the Red Sox. His lack of production, injury problems and massive contract all led to the outfielder falling out of favor among much of the team’s fan base.

Crawford was particularly frustrated with the way he was treated by the media, saying that the media loves to see people miserable. The 31-year-old also called the environment in Boston “toxic,” and he hasn’t backed off that stance since.

“I try not to even think about my days in Boston anymore,” Crawford told USA Today. “It’s still just such a nightmare. Every time I think about it, I cringe.”

Crawford is off to a fast start in Los Angeles. He enters Wednesday’s action hitting .314 with a .400 on-base percentage in 19 games with the Dodgers. That has Crawford smiling again, and it also begs the question of why he was unable to perform up to such a level in Beantown.

“Certain places for certain people, I guess,” Crawford said. “L.A. for me, that’s the way I look at it right now. L.A. might not be as comfortable for others, but it seems to be a place that works for me. Why? I don’t know.”

Adrian Gonzalez and Nick Punto — two other players sent to the Dodgers by the Red Sox in last August’s trade — are also off to hot starts. Gonzalez is hitting .377 (26-for-69) with two home runs and 14 RBIs in 19 games, while Punto is hitting .444 (8-for-18) in 11 games as a backup infielder.

Crawford was forced to conquer an elbow injury to get back on track, but the outfielder admits that his resurgence is about more than just overcoming a physical ailment.

“I had to dig down as deep as I’ve ever had to dig, into my soul, to find myself,” Crawford said. “I didn’t want to believe that stuff is true. To my mind, it wasn’t like trying to show those guys. To me, it was like if I don’t do it this year, it’s the end of my career.”

Now, it looks like Crawford has plenty of baseball ahead of him. Unfortunately for Red Sox fans, that also means there’s more complaining to be done about his short stint in Boston.

Mitt Romney may have lost the 2012 presidential election for what he said when he thought he was in private company, and it seems Padres president and CEO Tom Garfinkel has made a similar gaffe. Yahoo! Sports obtained audio of Garfinkel, who was speaking to a group of about 50 Padres season ticket holders (Who knew there were even 50 Padres season ticket holders?), not only blaming Greinke for the broken collarbone he suffered after Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin charged the mound, but poking fun at the pitcher’s battle with social anxiety disorder.

“He threw at him on purpose, OK?” Garfinkel said at Petco Park the day after the fight. “That’s what happened. They can say 3-and-2 count, 2-1 game, no one does that. Zack Greinke is a different kind of guy. Anyone seen ‘Rain Man’? He’s a very smart guy.”

After the audio became public, Garfinkel went into damage-control mode, apologizing to Dodgers CEO Stan Kasten and Greinke.

“I was emotional the day after the game and regrettably, while defending our player, I said some things I shouldn’t have, especially as it relates to Zack Greinke,” Garfinkel told Yahoo! Sports. “I was out of line and I apologize.”

More than 15 million Americans are said to suffer from social anxiety disorder. Greinke nearly quit baseball after the 2005 season, missing all of 2006, due to his battle with depression and other symptoms.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Padres slugger Carlos Quentin has dropped his appeal and is beginning an eight-game suspension for rushing the mound and inciting a brawl in which Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke broke his left collarbone.

With the suspension starting with Sunday’s game against Colorado, Quentin will miss the Padres’ three-game series at Dodger Stadium beginning Monday night.

Quentin charged the mound after he was hit in the upper left arm by a pitch from Greinke. The two players lowered their shoulders and Quentin slammed into Greinke, who broke his left collarbone in the wild fight that ensued.

Quentin says the suspension “is very difficult.” He reiterated that it was unfortunate that Greinke was injured, but says he still believes he had to protect himself.

During the first inning of the Los Angeles-Arizona game, Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick asked–well, forced–fans in the suite to change out of their Dodgers gear or else change seats. Ushers soon came along with D-backs shirts and caps, which the fans changed into in order to keep their coveted spot behind the catcher.

Deadspin contacted the team for an explanation of what happened and the Diamondbacks responded:

Due to the high visibility of the home plate box, we ask opposing team’s fans when they purchase those seats to refrain from wearing that team’s colors. During last night’s game, when Ken Kendrick noticed the fans there, he offered them another suite if they preferred to remain in their Dodger gear. When they chose to stay, he bought them all D-backs gear and a round of drinks and requested that they abide by our policy and they obliged.

Dodgers’ fans may have lost the battle, and the game, but they did at least go home with some new maroon and gold attire.

What happened on Thursday night in San Diego was unfortunate. Now get over it.

Carlos Quentin’s decision to charge the mound was dumb. The ensuing brawl led to a suspension for him and, more importantly, a broken clavicle for Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke. But as unfortunate as Greinke’s injury is, there’s no reason it should have increased the suspension handed down to Quentin.

Quentin was suspended eight games by Major League Baseball for his role in Thursday’s rumble. It’s a decent-sized suspension, but some –- mostly those on the Dodgers’ side of the fence -– feel as though the Padres slugger got off easy.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said after Thursday’s game that Quentin should be suspended for as long as Greinke’s out of action. Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw holds similar sentiments toward Quentin, who has already decided to appeal the suspension.

“If he’s smart, he’ll take the suspension,” Kershaw said after Friday’s game. “Eight games is not nearly enough. For what he did, he should be OK with that.”

The frustration in L.A. is understandable. Losing a front-end starter sucks, and it sucks even more when the entire situation that led to the injury was very much avoidable. Let’s not start changing the way we operate because of the names involved, though.

Not to sound unsympathetic toward what the Dodgers are now faced with, but would this really be as big of an issue if we were talking about someone other than Greinke? No one -– at least outside of a few sickos — wants to see a team lose a talented pitcher like Greinke because of an injury, especially when that pitcher is in the first year of a $147 million contract. It doesn’t change the fact that Major League Baseball should still operate as it would under other circumstances.

Baseball fights hardly ever yield positive results, which makes one wonder why they’re still relatively common. Players sometimes get hurt, and as unfortunate as that is, it’s part of the whole fighting concept. After all, these are grown men throwing their bodies around. It isn’t some pajama pillow fight. (Well, maybe a few look that way from time to time.)

Greinke and the Dodgers may not have asked for the fight -– although Greinke seemed to be a willing combatant when he threw down his glove and eventually lowered a shoulder into Quentin -– but there have been plenty of other pitchers who have been forced to defend themselves against angry, oncoming batters despite not wanting to engage in fisticuffs. A lot of times, the pitcher will run or throw his glove in defense. Greinke opted to stand his ground, and he paid for it.

Quentin was certainly the aggressor, but to all of a sudden expect Major League Baseball to hand down some abnormal suspension is crazy talk. Players have charged the mound in the past, and guys have gotten hurt as a result. It didn’t lead to some precedent-setting punishment, so why should this?

Greinke’s injury definitely stings more, but we should all just accept it for what it is: an unfortunate fluke occurrence.

There, it’s done with.

In hockey, a well-timed fight can shift momentum and completely change the complexion of a game. In baseball, trading punches usually amounts to nothing more than suspensions and busier team trainers.

The two sports are so different from a physical standpoint that it’s hardly worth a comparison, but Thursday’s rumble between the Dodgers and Padres shows exactly why baseball players should refrain from the rough stuff. Simply put, nothing good typically comes from throwing down on the diamond.

Now, that might sound like something your mother would tell you, or it might even appear on some gym class poster that I’m not privy to. But mother knows best, and who am I to question the validity of gym class posters? Baseball isn’t a physical sport, so getting “hyped up” before or during a game doesn’t really play in a team’s favor. It’s wasted energy, and if anything, it can have adverse effects, as a calm and collected approach is often a much more efficient way of going about your hardball business.

In hockey, a team can rally around a fight by increasing its physicality and energy, and often times a good scrap can help build team chemistry, but in baseball, a fight almost always leaves teams worse off than they were before the mess. Thursday’s bout is no different.

The Dodgers will be without ace Zack Greinke for eight weeks because of a broken clavicle, and the Padres will be without slugger Carlos Quentin once he’s suspended. Sure, all of us baseball fans who stayed up late to watch the west coast division rivals square off were treated to some entertaining moments, but the combatants are definitely wishing the whole incident had been avoided.

Quentin was undoubtedly at fault for the entire fiasco. Given the circumstances, it was clear Greinke didn’t intentionally hit Quentin, so therefore charging the mound is as boneheaded a move as you’ll see. Greinke, while definitely the victim, didn’t help matters by gesturing toward Quentin and subsequently lowering his shoulder against a 40-pound-heavier opponent.

The real losers in the whole thing, though, are the Dodgers (mostly), the Padres and baseball as a whole. Baseball fights are fun to watch because they’re so unpredictable — and relatively rare — but once the dust settles, we see why fighting doesn’t have a place within the game. It’s easy to get caught up in the temporary high of baseball fight, but the ensuing suspensions and — even worse — injuries always have a rather deflating impact.

In fact, it isn’t all that different from getting into a street fight. At the time, you might think that what you’re doing makes sense, but then you walk away from the ordeal sore and wondering whether the result justifies the incident. The answer is usually, ‘no.’”

This isn’t to take Thursday’s incident and simply say, ‘See. Shame on you. Fighting is bad.’” But we should look at the fallout of the Petco Park pugilism and ask, ‘What was the best-case scenario for either team in that situation?’”

That’s a question that’s hard to answer. What isn’t hard to figure out, however, is the worst-case scenario, because it’s right in front of our eyes.

There are plenty of high-priced players tossing their bodies around on the field when a baseball fight breaks out, and unfortunately for the Dodgers, they’ll be without their $147 million investment going forward because some fed-up slugger decided to bring idiocy to another level. Quentin obviously made a split-second, emotional decision, and his Padres will come away from the brawl far less impacted than the Dodgers, but his senselessness leaves us in a Greinke-less baseball world for the next two months.

Am I a fan of fighting in baseball? Well, like I said, it’s entertaining. But so is drunken gambling and watching people make fools out of themselves on YouTube. It doesn’t mean it’s productive.

Am I a fan of talented players playing baseball and staying healthy? Absolutely. And that’s why I worry about the potential ramifications every time someone charges the mound.

Perhaps more players should adapt such a forward-looking approach.

A CT scan on the right-hander’s left collarbone revealed he will need surgery, according to ESPN. Greinke suffered the injury in Thursday night’s bench-clearing brawl with San Diego. Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin took exception to getting hit by a pitch and tackled Greinke to the ground, with the dugouts emptying shortly after.

“He should not play a game until Greinke can pitch,” Don Mattingly said about Quentin after the game. “If he plays before Greinke pitches, something is wrong. Their guy charges the mound being an idiot and our guy is going to be out for however long and their guy is probably going to be playing in three days. It’s a joke.”

As Quentin charged the mound, Greinke lowered his non-throwing shoulder into the outfielder and absorbed most of the hit. Early reports have pegged Quentin’s suspension at eight games.

Carlos Quentin has reason to think that his getting hit by a pitch was intentional. But Zack Greinke also has plenty of reason to prove it was not.

Either way, the benches emptied twice Thursday night for one of the biggest brawls in recent Major League Baseball history, with Greinke taking home a broken collarbone and Quentin finally relieving his aggression after getting plunked dozens of time.

Quentin was facing Greinke in the bottom of the sixth, with the Padres trailing 2-1. He had worked the count full when a Greinke pitch came in and popped him on his leading shoulder.

Quentin has been hit 109 times in his career, twice by Greinke. That was enough to convince him that the pitch was no accident, no matter how improbable it is that Greinke would go after him in that situation.

Quentin charged the mound, and Greinke met him with some expletives and a lowered shoulder. It soon devolved into a scrum, with Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp — who had to get away from a tight pitch of his own earlier in the game — in the middle of most of the action.

Check out the clip below to see how it went down, including Vin Scully‘s interpretation of the events (“fertilizer,” anyone?) and the original pitch that had Kemp upset. Josh Beckett, who isn’t exactly known as a peacemaker, can also be seen smoothing some feathers after the benches clear for a second time.

Oh, this was a good one.

Zack Greinke has a broken collarbone, Carlos Quentin is facing a suspension, and the Dodgers and Padres will get to have Round 2 of this madness Monday night when the two teams meet again.

But apparently Matt Kemp didn’t want to wait that long. The Dodgers outfielder, who was a big part of both times the benches cleared Thursday night, carried the brawl into the parking lot after the game. Kemp had been buzzed by a pitch earlier in the game, and he didn’t take kindly to Quentin charging the mound and taking down Greinke.

Kemp reportedly had angry words for Quentin in the parking lot before the two were separated.

Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times gives a little more detail, reporting that, as Quentin walked out, Kemp told him, ‘We’ll see, [expletive].”

Indeed, we will. Mark you calendars for Monday night.

SAN DIEGO — Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke broke his left collarbone in a bench-clearing brawl with the San Diego Padres during Los Angeles’ 3-2 victory Thursday night.

Juan Uribe‘s pinch-hit home run in the eighth put the Dodgers ahead, two innings after Greinke hit Carlos Quentin on the left shoulder with a pitch.

The slugger started walking toward the mound, and Greinke appeared to say something. Quentin then charged the 2009 American League Cy Young Award winner. They dropped their shoulders and collided, and Quentin tackled the pitcher to the grass.

Quentin and Greinke ended up at the bottom of a huge scrum as players from both sides ran onto the field and jumped in.

Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp, ejected following the fight, confronted Quentin as they were leaving Petco Park after the game. The two went nose-to-nose briefly before Padres pitcher Clayton Richard stepped between them. Police and security broke it up.

Both teams said the melee could have been avoided.

“I never hit him on purpose,” said Greinke, who had his left arm in a sling and appeared shaken after the game. “I never thought about hitting him on purpose. He always seems to think that I’m hitting him on purpose, but that’s not the case. That’s all I can really say about it.”

Asked if there was bad blood between the teams, Greinke, who twice hit Quentin with pitches when they were in the American League, said: “Now there probably is. I don’t know if there was beforehand.”

He said the injury was “awful. It’s silly that something could happen like that. I’m disappointed.”

Quentin said his history with Greinke has been “well-documented. That situation could have been avoided. You’d have to ask Zack about that.”

“I’ve been hit by many pitches,” said Quentin, plunked more often than any other major league hitter since the start of 2008. “Some have been intentional, some have not been. For the amount I have been hit and my hitting style, I’m going to repeat: I have never reacted that way.”

When they were finally pulled apart, Quentin was led off the field by teammate Mark Kotsay. Greinke was checked by a trainer and manager Don Mattingly before walking toward the dugout, his uniform top disheveled after it had been pulled over his head by Quentin.

Greinke lowered his left (non-throwing) shoulder into Quentin and took the brunt of the blow as they collided. The right-hander, who had his wife and in-laws in the stands, joined the Dodgers as a free agent in the offseason, signing a $147 million, six-year contract.

He missed time during spring training with a tender right elbow and the flu. Quentin was slowed by a balky right knee after having offseason surgery.

After the teams started going back to the dugouts and bullpens, Jerry Hairston Jr. came running across the field yelling and pointing at someone in the San Diego dugout and had to be restrained.

Kemp also was livid, perhaps in part because Padres starter Jason Marquis threw a high-and-tight pitch to him in the first inning.

The benches and bullpens emptied again, leading to pushing and shoving. But it did not appear any punches were thrown.

Quentin, Kemp, Hairston and Greinke were ejected. Los Angeles reliever Chris Capuano was given all the time he needed to warm up when play finally resumed after a delay of about 15 minutes.

Following the game, the Dodgers announced that Greinke has a broken collarbone.

Quentin was hit by a pitch above the right wrist by Dodgers reliever Ronald Belisario on Tuesday and had to leave the game. He sat out Wednesday night’s game.

Greinke plunked Quentin once in 2008 and once in 2009, according to STATS. Coming into the game, Quentin was 6-for-24 with three homers against Greinke.

Quentin has been hit by pitches 116 times in his career, including an AL-high 23 times in 2011 with the Chicago White Sox. Greinke has hit 46 batters since his big league debut in 2004.

After play resumed, Alexi Amarista pinch-ran for Quentin, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Yonder Alonso‘s single to tie the game at 2.

Uribe homered to left on a 3-2 pitch from Luke Gregerson (1-1) with one out in the eighth to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead.

Matt Guerrier (1-0) retired the only batter he faced, getting Jesus Guzman to fly out to end the seventh with runners on first and second. Kenley Jensen pitched the ninth for his first save.

Former San Diego star Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer deep into the seats down the right-field line with two outs in the first off Marquis, his first. Carl Crawford was aboard on a leadoff single.

Marquis allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings, struck out five and walked four.
