According to various local reports, a man in Jupiter, Fla., accidentally shot himself at a bowling alley when a ball struck his leg, somehow causing the gun in his pocket to accidentally discharge. The man, who was not identified by name, was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center and is expected to be fine, say police.

Police also said the man will not face any criminal charges. Check out a local news report on the mishap in the video below.

When you play a team called the Omaha Beef, you’re bound to get into some kind of confrontation.

That’s exactly what happened at a recent Champions Professional Indoor Football League matchup between the Beef and the Lincoln Haymakers. Beef running back RJ Rollins scored on a one-yard run to put the Beef up over the Haymakers 27-23 with 3:10 to play. The play capped off a late scoring drive where Omaha rallied from a 13-point deficit to pull ahead of Lincoln.

Haymakers head coach Dave Brumagen apparently was not pleased to see his team’s lead dwindle, and he took his frustrations out on Rollins, giving the running back a good shove to the ground after he scored the touchdown.

Check out the aggressive confrontation in the video below.

The university is not confirming the identity of the quarterback, but the Inquirer reports that the victim was senior Trevor Sasek. He was stabbed several times in the chest and abdomen during a fight Sunday morning at a parking lot at 54 East Delaware Ave. in Newark, Del., and is in “stable condition” after having surgery, according to the Inquirer.

He may be only third in line to claim the British throne, but over the weekend Prince Harry was first in the hearts of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

According to The Telegraph, Prince Harry of Wales (his official title) visited the Academy on Day 4 of his United States tour. The 28-year-old watched the football team practice and also took part firsthand in some of the cheerleader’s drills. The prince actually helped out as a base of the pyramid, getting Britain’s highest military official in America, major general Buster Howse, to line up alongside him.

Academy football coach Troy Calhoun also spent some time working with the royal on his American football motion, having him throw some passes. By the end, the prince was reportedly hitting receivers at 40 yards away and caught a 50-yard pass on the run.

“The Prince was terrific,” said Calhoun. “You can tell he has great body coordination, he would be a natural football player. He is aggressive, he is strong, he is smart, I would love to sign him up to the Air Force Academy football team if I could.

“Honestly I was a little surprised how good he was. It’s not an easy game to pick up and a football is not a regular ball.”

Check out an image from Prince Harry’s visit to Colorado below.

Try telling that to a couple of clubs who recently got into a wild donnybrook in Russia.

A video posted to YouTube on Sunday shows two youth hockey teams engaging in a bench-clearing brawl after a couple of body checks sparked some drama. The brawl saw kids grouping off into outnumbered pummelfests and speeding skaters laying down some blind-side flying tackles before coaches, refs and parents were able to break things up.

West Virginia athletics is currently best known as the place that produced Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith. So maybe the baseball team decided it was getting overshadowed and wanted to stand out?

Morgantown, W.Va., is still surrounded by a rural setting, so perhaps a little camouflage is appropriate After all, WVU camouflage hats were already a preexisting thing, according to Amazon.com. Nonetheless, it’s hard to look at the new alternate jerseys for WVU’s baseball team and not deem them “ugly.” Maybe it’s the yellow primary color, but they just don’t measure up to the Padres’ military-honoring duds.

Then again, considering WVU was ranked as the No. 1 party school in America last year, maybe the jersey and its yellow hue is designed to hide vomit stains? In any case, check out an image of the new uniform in the image below, and try not to upchuck, yourself.

Simpson, a two-time Olympic medalist, was one of 11 crew members on board Artemis Racing’s 72-foot catamaran. He was trapped under the boat after it overturned. Doctors attempted to revive him both in the water and then on shore, but they were unsuccessful.

“The entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened,” Artemis Racing CEO Paul Cayard said in a statement. “Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew’s wife and family.”

Simpson won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. According to the Artemis Racing website, all other crew members were accounted for.

MURRAY, UTAH – A Utah soccer referee who slipped into a coma after being punched by a teenage player during a game a week ago died Saturday night, police said.

Ricardo Portillo, 46, of Salt Lake City passed away at the hospital, where he was being treated following an assault, Unified police spokesman Justin Hoyal said.

Police have accused a 17-year-old player in a recreational soccer league of punching Portillo after the man called a foul on him and issued him a yellow card.

”The suspect was close to Portillo and punched him once in the face as a result of the call,” Hoyal said in a press release.

The teen has been booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of aggravated assault.

Hoyal said authorities will consider additional charges since Portillo has died.

He said an autopsy is planned. No cause of death was released.

Portillo suffered swelling in his brain and had been listed in critical condition, Dr. Shawn Smith said Thursday at the Intermountain Medical Center in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray.

The victim’s family, which publicly spoke of Portillo’s plight this past week, has asked for privacy, Hoyal said.

Johana Portillo, 26, said last week that she wasn’t at the April 27 game in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville, but she said she’s been told by witnesses and detectives that the player hit her father in the side of the head.

”When he was writing down his notes, he just came out of nowhere and punched him,” she said.

Accounts from a police report, Portillo’s daughter and others further detail what occurred.

The teenager was playing goalie during a game at Eisenhower Junior High School in Taylorsville when Ricardo Portillo issued him a yellow card for pushing an opposing forward trying to score a goal. In soccer, a yellow card is given as a warning to a player for an egregious violation of the rules. Two yellow cards lead to a red card and expulsion from the game.

The teenager, quite a bit heavier than Portillo, began arguing with the referee, then unleashed a punch to his face. Portillo seemed fine at first, then asked to be held because he felt dizzy. He sat down and started vomiting blood, triggering his friend to call an ambulance.

When police arrived around noon, the teenager was gone and Portillo was laying on the ground in the fetal position. Through translators, Portillo told EMTs that his face and back hurt and he felt nauseous. He had no visible injuries and remained conscious. He was considered to be in fair condition when they took him to the Intermountain Medical Center.

But when Portillo arrived to the hospital, he slipped into a coma with swelling in his brain. Johana Portillo called detectives to let them know his condition had worsened.

That’s when detectives intensified their search for the goalie. By Saturday evening, the teenager’s father agreed to bring him down to speak with police.

Portillo’s family said he had been attacked before, and Johanna Portillo said she and her sisters begged their father to stop refereeing because of the risk from angry players, but he continued because he loved soccer.

”It was his passion,” she said. ”We could not tell him no.”

Heavy rollers went over the dirt surface to pack the top layer and prevent water from seeping into the base, but it still made for a difficult running surface. A colt named Orb prevailed over his opponents and the less-than-ideal track conditions to win the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Orb entered the race as a co-favorite with 6-1 odds to win it all. Orb was paid $1,439,800 as the winner, and was ridden by jockey Joel Rosario, who also won the Dubai World Cup in March aboard Animal Kingdom, the 2011 Kentucky Derby winner.

Orb was trained by Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey, who earned his first Derby win.

Golden Soul finished second while Revolutionary, the other co-favorite, was third

What started out as an ordinary soccer game over the weekend in Utah will forever change the Porillo family.

During a game in Murray, Utah, youth soccer ref Riccardo Portillo — a 46-year-old father of three girls — was punched by a 17-year-old player after he issued a yellow card. The punch to the side of Portillo’s head was so severe that he fell into a coma and remains in “extremely critical condition,” according to KSN.com.

The 17-year-old player has reportedly been booked into a juvenile detention center for “investigation of aggravated assault,” according to Police Lt. Justin Hoyal. Dr. Shawn Smith, alongside Portillo’a family, told reporters at the Intermountain Medical Center, that the punch caused “bleeding around the blood vessels in one area of the brain, and blood loss and edema in another.”

More details are included in the video below.

An Australian field hockey player died Wednesday when he chose to go for a run after unknowingly being bitten by a venomous snake.

Karl Berry reportedly picked up a snake near Marrara Hockey Centre in the Australian city of Darwin on Tuesday, believing it was not poisonous, with the intent to throw it into the woods.

He then set out on a 1.2-mile run, during which his elevated heart rate pumped the venom from the bite into his blood stream more quickly. Berry was conscious after he collapsed and was tended to by paramedics, but he could not recover and died at the hospital a few hours later.

The 26-year-old Berry had been the captain of the Commerce-Pints Hockey Club based in Darwin.

Now, whatever money he may have left is being eyed by the U.S. Postal Service, the major sponsor of Armstrong’s cycling team from 1996 until 2005.

Late Tuesday, the U.S. Justice Department formally filed its lawsuit against Armstrong, reports CNN. Due to the statute of limitations, the government had until the end of Tuesday to file the suit.

“The USPS paid approximately $40 million to sponsor the USPS cycling team from 1998 to 2004,” says the court document.

However, the government is seeking nearly three times that figure under the False Claims Act, more than $100 million, from Armstrong. Essentially, the government is alleging that Armstrong’s now-admitted use of performance-enhancing drugs during his seven Tour de France wins represents a breach of contract between Armstrong and the Postal Service.

The suit also names Armstrong’s company, Tailwind Sports, and team manager Johan Bruyneel as defendants.

The Trackstreet Boys, formerly known as the Duke track team, decided to sway just a bit outside of their lanes when they decided to make this year’s tribute video. The five athletes owned the stage with some not-so-bad choreography and stellar costumes — mocking one of the 1990s’ greatest hits. One thing is certain, Nick Carter and company would be proud of these bros.

Brett Archibald was found floating on his back in the Indian Ocean — alive — by a rescue team 12 miles off of the Mentawai Island of Sipora. Archibald was part of a group traveling on a surf trip to Indonesia, and it is believed that he fell overboard during the night while battling seasickness.

When Archibald didn’t show up for breakfast, his travelmates knew something was wrong.

Archibald was eventually found by the crew of a boat out of Sydney after treading in the water for more than a day.

The married father of two told the magazine Surfing Life that he suspects he passed out at some point while getting sick and woke up in the water around 3:15 a.m. with the boat miles away in front of him.

“He said he came close to drowning at least eight times during his 27 hour ordeal [swimming and drifting at sea] and that he had been stung by jelly fish, picked at by fish and seagulls had tried to pluck his eyes out,” Craig Lambinon, who works in Sea Rescue Communications for the National Sea Rescue Institute told Stab.

Archibald said he wouldn’t have been able to last at sea much longer than he did. He said that he saw land at least five times but was unable to get close to it because the current kept pulling him out.

And justice has won”

So said the Boston police department late Friday night, after one suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings was captured and another killed after an exhaustive manhunt.

“It’s a proud day to be a Boston police officer,” commissioner Ed Davis declared after the arrest of Dzhokar Tsarnaev, a 19-year-old dubbed “Suspect No. 2″ by the FBI. Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan, were identified by authorities as suspects Thursday in the Patriots’ Day attack.

The two were engaged by police beginning Thursday night, and the 26-year-old Tamerlan was killed in a firefight with authorities. Dzhokar eluded capture for several hours as the city of Boston was put on lockdown, but he was eventually tracked to a backyard in Watertown, Mass.

Following his arrest, the junior Tsarnaev was transported to a local hospital, where he would be treated for injuries.

According to ESPN and The Associated Press, the university is investigating allegations of verbal abuse against the coach. Rutgers has been reviewing video of all sports’ practices since the Rice incident, in which the coach was caught on tape physically assaulting players and using homophobic slurs.

“While I cannot comment on an ongoing investigation, let me reiterate that there is no place at Rutgers for words or actions that are inconsistent with the values of the university. Our student-athletes, as all members of the Rutgers community, should know that our university is committed to promoting an atmosphere of respect and dignity,” said Rutgers president Robert Barchi. “As I stressed earlier, we will be looking closely at all intercollegiate athletics at Rutgers going forward. If we find problems, we will address them.”

Brecht was in his second season at Rutgers. Before that, he spent seven years at Siena College, where he was a three-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference coach of the year.
