Darin Downs isn’t a household name, but his baseball career should be noted. The left-hander, now with the Houston Astros, saw his career and life flash before his eyes when he was struck in the head by a line drive in 2009. Doctors were unsure if Downs would survive the night, and the pitcher ended up spending three days in intensive care. Downs spent a total of 12 days in the hospital recovering from a fractured skull, brain swelling and internal bleeding.
Downs, who initially had trouble speaking after the injury, returned to the mound and made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2012.
Oh yeah, if that’s not enough, Downs learned that he had been claimed by the Astros last November while driving his pregnant wife to the hospital.
