The Rays have relied heavily on their pitching the last few years, and they’re expected to do the same in 2013. The difference is that James Shields is gone, with the right-hander having been traded to Kansas City. That means David Price will need to elevate his game even more. And while it shouldn’t be a problem for the perennial Cy Young candidate, it could be the difference between the Rays competing in a deep AL East and taking a step backward. Plus, Price is playing for his next contract. With another solid season, Price could use Felix Hernandez’s monster extension as a bench mark in contract negotiations.
