The Red Sox began their home-opener winning streak in 2005, when they received their World Series rings, unfurled a massive championship banner and went on to blow out the Yankees. Derek Lowe and Dave Roberts had moved on from the Sox the previous offseason, but both returned to Fenway for Opening Day.
The pregame ceremony also featured one of the most memorable moments in home opener history, as the Fenway faithful greeted Yankees closer Mariano Rivera — who blew two saves in the ALCS the previous season — not with boos but with a raucous ovation. Rivera, to his credit, was a good sport about it, laughing and tipping his cap to the crowd.
