This unit should be much better, based on how much money has been put into it, but after being ranked ninth in total rushing in 2012, they make the cut at No. 10. I’ll say now that quarterbacks are being taken into account here, so Cam Newton’s rushing prowess bumps the Panthers up into the Top 10. Newton led the team in rushing in 2012 with 741 yards and eight touchdowns on 127 carries. Jonathan Stewart finished 14th in Pro Football Focus’ “elusive rating,” which “boils down a runner’s success beyond the point of being helped by his blockers.” DeAngelo Williams finished 15th in PFF’s “breakaway percentage,” which “shows which runners earn the highest (and lowest) percentage of their yardage on big plays (any runs of 15 yards or more).” Mike Tolbert, Kenjon Barner, Tauren Poole, Armond Smith and Michael Zordich round out the running back stable.
