Let’s get this one out of the way early. Cliff Lee (especially) and Cole Hamels were the subject of trade rumors last season, with many wondering whether the Red Sox might consider getting involved. If the Phillies struggle again this season, you can expect more of the same, even though the Red Sox have plenty of starting pitching depth right now.
Lee will make $62.5 million in 2015 and 2016, while Hamels is in the second year of a seven-year, $147 million deal. When you consider that and Jon Lester’s impending free agency, a midseason pursuit of Lee or Hamels seems unlikely for the Red Sox, although it’ll be an opportunity there for the taking.
