One of Thornton’s most memorable moments as a Bruin is unfortunately an ugly blemish on an otherwise fruitful tenure with the team. In a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 7, 2013, Brooks Orpik injured Loui Eriksson on a controversial hit. This led to a series of head-hunting by both teams, which culminated with a James Neal knee-on-head collision with Brad Marchand. Thornton immediately took exception and mauled Orpik to the ice, repeatedly punching him. Thornton was given a 15-game suspension by the NHL for his actions.
