It was once thought that Schaaf and Werder Bremen were inseparable. He led the German club for 14 years, winning two Bundesliga (German first division) titles and three DFB Cups (German cups). He was the Bundesliga’s longest-serving head coach until he left the club in May.
Schaaf, 52, has been a member of Werder Bremen since 1972. He played for its first team from 1978-1995 before joining the club as a coach. He assumed the role of head coach in 1999 and lasted 5,119 days and 644 days on the bench. However, three years without qualifying for European competition convinced Schaaf and the club that it is time for a chance.
