Not even a foul ball to the head could affect Andrew Miller on Friday night.

The Red Sox reliever was getting some gum in the top of the ninth inning when Jarrod Saltalamacchia fouled a line drive into Boston’s dugout. The ball ricocheted off the wall and hit Miller in the head, but the lefty said he was fine.

Miller went back out in the bottom of the ninth and retired two batters to conclude a perfect 1 2/3 innings. To hear Miller’s reaction to the scare, check out the video above or on NESN’s YouTube channel.

The Red Sox really needed that one.

After losing nine of 11 games and falling all the way to third place in the American League East, Boston’s offense finally came through Wednesday night, pouring in nine runs in a 9-2 rout of Tampa Bay.

Jon Lester was strong again on the mound, allowing two runs on eight hits over seven innings to run his record to 6-0, and he credited the Red Sox’ bats for taking some of the heat off him.

“It’s big,” Lester said. “We haven’t scored a bunch of runs lately, and that just takes a lot of pressure off of [the pitchers] to go out there and execute pitches.”

See more from Lester’s postgame comments in the video above.

The fun had to come to an end at some point, and after experiencing a successful April, the Red Sox have gotten their first few tests of the season.

The Sox have won just four games in their last 12 dating back to May 1, a period in which they also suffered their first sweep of the season at the hands of the Rangers. On Sunday the Sox dropped a 12-4 decision to the Blue Jays. The recent struggles haven’t fazed starter Ryan Dempster and he says he is sure his teammates plan to fight to “get back on that winning track we’re used to.”

To hear what else Dempster had to say after the loss, check out the video above.

After allowing just one run through the first 5 1/3 innings Thursday night, one mistake brought John Lackey‘s promising outing crumbling down.

With men on first and second and one out in the top of the sixth, Lackey appeared to be in prime position to start an inning-ending double-play when he fielded a ground ball off the bat of Trevor Plouffe. But his throw to Dustin Pedroia sailed into center field, allowing Joe Mauer to score all the way from second. A sac fly and a two-run home run later, the Red Sox found themselves in a 5-2 hole that they were unable to climb out of.

Hear Lackey’s critique of his performance in the video above.

Jonny Gomes wouldn’t say the Red Sox played well Wednesday night against the Twins, but he did praise his team’s unwillingness to quit after falling into a 4-0 hole after just one half-inning. Boston actually took the lead in the bottom of the frame, with a grand slam by Gomes providing the bulk of the damage, but it was all Minnesota the rest of the way.

To hear Gomes’ take on the loss, as well as pitching coach Juan Nieves‘ breakdown of Allen Webster‘s shaky second start, check out the video above.

David Ross left Tuesday night’s game against the Twins in the fifth inning after colliding with Will Middlebrooks as they both tried to catch a foul ball. Middlebrooks left the game after the sixth inning.

The two are the most recent Sox players to suffer injury, and the numbers seem to be piling up. Closer Andrew Bailey was placed on the disabled list on Monday, and Joel Hanrahan hit the DL on Tuesday after leaving Monday’s game with an injury. The Sox are looking to get their mojo back, and Ross is confident his team can do just that.

Joel Hanrahan gave up a game-tying home run in the ninth inning of the Red Sox’ Monday night matchup against the Minnesota Twins. To make matters worse, Hanrahan left the game with right forearm tightness just after giving up the hit.

The Sox closer has already seen the disabled list this season, suffering from a hamstring issue in April, and it is certainly not the way Hanrahan saw the debut campaign with the Sox going. There has been no word yet on whether or not Monday night’s injury is enough to send Hanrahan to the DL again.

Check out the video above to see what Hanrahan had to say about his disappointing outing.

Starter Jon Lester pitched six innings in the loss, and despite his offense giving him a considerable cushion, was unable to stave off the Rangers as they tied things up in the sixth. Lester admitted after the game that he could have done a better job of minimizing the damage done by the Rangers’ offense.

The Red Sox have dropped the first two games in a three-game series with the Texas Rangers, and the Rangers have held the typically powerful Boston offense to just one run in two games.

The Rangers have had their way with the Sox thus far, but third baseman Will Middlebrooks is confident his team will be able to get back in their groove on Sunday and close out the series with a win.

Check out the video above to hear more of what Middlebrooks had to say.

Felix Doubront allowed six runs against the Rangers, and things could have been a lot worse. The lefty allowed 12 hits in his 3 2/3 innings of work on Friday night, but escaped trouble in the early innings before running into it during a big fourth inning for Texas.

After the game, he discussed a recent dip in his velocity, but didn’t seem all that concerned about it. He brushed off any worries about injuries and promised to “just move forward” from this game.

Some Red Sox fans were puzzled to see Joel Hanrahan enter in the ninth inning Thursday night instead of closer Andrew Bailey. Sox manager John Farrell had elected to stick with Bailey at the back of the bullpen when Hanrahan returned from a hamstring injury earlier this week.

The situation was nothing to be alarmed about, however, as Bailey explained that the skipper had given him the night off due to some mild discomfort in his arm. “Mild” is the key word, the closer insisted, calling the injury “nothing crazy” and assuring the assembled media that he will be just fine within a couple of days.

Hear more of what Bailey had to say in the video above.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia may be beating himself up over this one for a little while.

The Red Sox had their five-game win streak snapped on Tuesday night in Toronto, and two of the Blue Jays’ nine runs were scored on an error made by Saltalamacchia in the third inning. The Sox went on to lose 9-7.

The error occurred in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded and nobody out. Saltalamacchia threw to Mike Napoli at first base in an attempt to pick off Jose Bautista. In the process of his throw, Saltalamacchia’s elbow hit the umpire’s face mask behind him, causing the throw to go wild and end up past Napoli in right field.

According to the rules, once Saltalamacchia’s arm hit the umpire’s face mask, it should have been a dead ball and the runs shouldn’t have counted.

Hear what Salty had to say about the play in the video above.

Daniel Nava has been off to a hot start this season, and after Sunday’s game against the Astros, he had recorded two hits in back-to-back games.

The switch-hitter’s bat has been explosive so far, and Nava is also making his presence felt in right field. He started in right for the first time this season on April 21 against the Kansas City Royals, but that position hasn’t come as easily to him.

Nava said it is taking him some time to get used to covering the large amount of space on the right as compared to the short distance on the left.

Hear more about how Nava is adjusting in the video above.

Felix Doubront tallied his first win of the season Saturday night against the Astros, but it didn’t come easy.

The lefty threw 31 pitches in the first inning, hitting Brandon Barnes, throwing a number of wild pitches and walking two others in the inning. Out of those 31 pitches, just 14 were strikes. The Sox came up to bat in the first inning already down 2-0.

Doubront was able to correct his errors, though, focusing on the strike zone and getting quick outs. His resilience was apparent, as he pitched into the seventh inning and the Sox clinched an 8-4 win over the Astros.

Check out the video above to hear what Doubront had to say after the game.

It’s rare to have a defensive highlight stand out in a game that featured 24 hits and 10 runs, but Jonny Gomes snuck one in with a sprawling grab in left field to rob Houston’s Jason Castro and end the fifth inning.

Gomes also pitched in at the plate, driving in his first run as a member of the Red Sox with a single in the eighth to secure a 7-3 win for Boston.

After the game, the left fielder talked with reporters about the catch, Ryan Dempster‘s first win and his team’s hit parade. Check out his interview in the video above.

Clay Buchholz has been nothing short of masterful so far this season, and he showed no signs of slowing down against the Astros.

The Red Sox starter picked up his league-leading fifth win against Houston on Thursday night, allowing just two runs over 7 2/3 innings while striking out 10 batters. Buchholz is off to a great start, and if he can keep it up, things are certainly looking up for the 2013 Red Sox.

Check out the above video to see what Buchholz had to say about his start after the game.

Stephen Drew managed just one hit against Oakland pitching on Wednesday, but it turned out to be one of the most important of the afternoon.

Drew’s triple to right field brought home both Mike Napoli and Will Middlebrooks, tying the score at 3-3 in a game the Red Sox would eventually win 6-5. It came as a welcome change for the shortstop, who hadn’t driven in a run in seven games entering Wednesday’s series finale at Fenway Park.
