Daisuke Matsuzaka tossed an absolute gem on the mound at Fenway Park on Monday afternoon, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia took notice.

Matsuzaka, who hadn't pitched in the major leagues since going on the disabled list with a neck injury in July, took the hill at Fenway against the Royals on Monday afternoon and threw seven innings of stellar baseball.

Saltalamacchia was impressed by his starter's performance and made sure to note that it was his "best start of the year" after the 5-1 win on Monday.

Dustin Pedroia went out and helped the Red Sox pull out a win Friday night even as trade rumors continued around his team.

After the win, Pedroia seemed relieved to finally see a victory on the scoreboard but also made it clear that he wasn't distracted by the rumors.

One of the wildest games that Red Sox fans have seen in years nearly ended in walk-off fashion on Thursday night. And Dustin Pedroia thought that would be the case in the end.

After going back and forth with the Angels all night long, the Red Sox took to the plate in the ninth down one run. But Cody Ross bombed a shot over the Green Monster to tie things up, and it seemed that Boston might actually pull off the win after all. A trying 10th inning, which featured two runs from Los Angeles ultimately did the Sox in, though, even with Pedroia's attempted heroics in the final frame.

The Boston Red Sox fired pitching coach Bob McClure on Monday, setting an example after Boston continued its season-long streak of bad starts over the weekend.

While McClure may have been the scapegoat in the situation, Randy Niemann will now inherit the responsibility of fixing a mightily struggling staff.

Niemann believes he can help make some serious changes within the Red Sox pitching staff and he plans to offer a new voice to the pitchers within the organization.

Clay Buchholz was his impressive self once again on Thursday night, but this time he was impressed by the offense.

Buchholz, who allowed just three earned runs over eight innings, got six runs of support in the win over Baltimore and locked down his 11th win of the season.

After the game Buchholz had nothing by words of praise for his offensive unit, making sure they got credit for the effort in the 6-3 win.

Jon Lester had another solid outing on Wednesday in the Red Sox 10-4 win over the Blue Jays, and he's starting to feel more confident about his pitches.

Lester went seven innings and allowed four runs in the win, but said he's been feeling a lot better with his command and velocity against opposing hitters. The Red Sox ace even admitted to some mistakes on the mound but seemed to trust the location and ability of his pitches in each instance.

Coming into the 2012 season, the big knock on Mike Aviles was his lack of defensive ability at the shortstop position. Now, it seems that the talented infielder is playing a major role in coordinating the Boston defensive attack.

Aviles made a key play in the Red Sox 5-1 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday night, keeping a runner at first base because of his knowledge of the kicks and caroms around Fenway Park.

Aviles has been in constant communication with his fellow fielders and especially the outfielders to help improve the team's defense.  He discussed it after Tuesday night's victory.

David Ortiz went a dreadful 0-for-4 on Thursday night and appeared to be the only Red Sox player out of sync in an otherwise flawless 7-0 win over the Orioles.

Ortiz wasn’t worried about his own shortcomings though, instead focusing on the impressive play of some of his teammates, including Daniel Nava.

Dustin Pedroia was back in the Red Sox lineup on Tuesday night, and although the All-Star second baseman didn’t have a stellar game — going 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts — he was back to being the emotional leader both in the field and on the bench.

Pedey talked about his thumb injury after the game and mentioned that he felt pretty healthy out on the field, even considering his rough night at the plate.

Clay Buchholz threw his best outing of the season on Friday night, giving up just two runs over eight innings of work.

Buchholz’s fastball command was stellar and his breaking ball was buckling the knees of just about every Blue Jay to stand in the batters box. Clay seemed awfully better and increasingly confident about his progress this season, during his postgame media session.

Ryan Sweeney's return to the Red Sox batting order has been a huge relief for manager Bobby Valentine. But it appears his defense is being welcomed back with open arms as well.

After Thursday's 7-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers, fellow outfielder Scott Podsednik shared some glowing remarks about Sweeney's defensive effort. Podsednik directly referenced one impressive catch that Sweeney made, as well as his overall intensity in the field.

Ryan Sweeney returned to the Red Sox lineup on Monday after missing a week while on the disabled list.

The outfielder had a concussion after making a diving catch last Saturday that rattled his head.

Sweeney came back in style, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. He said he's still getting up to game speed but looked to be fully recovered from the injury.

Adrian Gonzalez looked to be the hero Sunday afternoon when he bashed a three-run homer that put Boston ahead against Tampa Bay.

But the Rays came back in the ninth inning to steal the win at Fenway Park.

Still, it was a good sign for Gonzalez, who has struggled offensively this season. He said he was happy not that his swing looked good but rather that his hit put the Sox on top.

He was already looking ahead to Boston's next chance to win.

The Red Sox outfielder joined the legion of Boston players on the disabled list Tuesday after injuring his foot.

Will Middlebrooks didn't seem too concerned with the latest injury to his hamstring after Tuesday's game.

The third baseman left the game in Kansas City in the second inning after reinjuring his left hamstring. He pulled up after hitting a double in his first at-bat.
